This bike is for someone like me. I'm 34 and big into vintage 70's and 80's bikes. I'm sick of constantly wrenching and not a huge fan of a total sport bike. The XSR900 is a win for me

This bike would fit me perfectly when I turn of legal age to own one. I'm a 21 year old male from Sweden that likes retro Cafe racers and have raced dirt bikes since 9 years of age now and starting to look more towards the on-road bikes. I think the reason is BC I want that super responsive Yamaha engine but yet the retro styling BC the MX culture is so influenced from the 90/80'S two strokes. So I will definitely buy one when the possibility comes. All I've seen on this bike rewiew-vice is only possitive, so it's no doubt from my side even though my our of range age compared to the bike class stereotypes.

DickWheels Go for it. This is the best bike I have ever owned. Great ergos, flickable and the engine character of the yammie triple is addicting. I was close to picking up a leftover 1098 Street Fighter, but am thankful I went with something reliable....8k miles so far and not a sign of an issue.

I actually passed for now. I planned on putting 5000 down but the payment was still 100 a month for the next 5 years. I didn't really want to do that with our limited riding season here in NY. I ended up buying a showroom mint condition 2003 ZRX1200R. 8300 miles on it.

I'm 26 and I bought this bike back in July. I absolutely love it. It's a blast to ride and leaves me grinning from ear to ear after each pull of the throttle. Coming from a ZX-6R Ninja this bike has provided a smooth transition. It has the same electrifying speed of a sport bike while allowing you to sit up comfortably. The handlebars are placed a good distance apart letting the rider get a firm grasp and feeling more control in corners. I might not tip it over as far as the Ninja, but I can take corners faster on this bike simply because of how easy it is to ride. I would (and do) recommend this bike to experienced riders looking for a thrill.

@@sixthisoverdrive You do know where this engine came from???? Circa 1985. I bought the 2020 Yamaha white/red version and now after a 2021 yellow/black version like yours. That engine is so advanced on so many levels. Stainless valve stems, carburized valve seals, fracture split forged (R1 style) rods, linerless bores (no steel sleeves), straight down inlet ports, 45 degree canted forward cylinder block and so much more. It's an amazing triple 850cc engine. The bike itself is absolutely faultless on public roads and even when really pushing on! This is THE finest road bike I have ever ridden or owned since 1976. I've ridden bikes for some 20 years. I've own adventure bikes, sports bikes, touring bikes and customs. The XSR900 is by far the one that have put the most grin on my face. I do miss not having a nice looking luggage option when I go for a little longer ride though, still searching for that. Otherwise this is a perfect match for me as I do mostly shorter pleasure rides in and around town. I'm 6"3 and weigh in at ~225lbs and have no problems riding it at all.

Too bad you guys don't get the XJR1300 as we do in Europe, for a classic bike that's been around since 1995 with it's first model the 1200cc big bore engine that later in '98 changed to 1300cc with 98.00 HP (71.5 kW) @ 8000 RPM although is was heavy 232.0 kg (511.5 pounds) was a beast on the road in all situations, excellent traveler, awesome punch at low revs, and barely none technical failures what so ever. The XSR series comes from the XJR inspiration back in the day but focused on a modernized street all purpose bike which they did an excellent job with it, trust me when I tell you that if you get this bike you won't get bored of it, will be in your garage for many years of riding enjoyment, greetings from the old EU continent mates, safe riding !!

Just bought one of these, pick it up at the weekend. Enjoyed your vid. Now I'm planning to alter the look of my bike, going to have a Velocity - Moto LC 900 kit fitted. Velocity Moto is a small company based here in England. The idea of the kit is to make the bike look like the old RD350's of the 80s. Yes I'm that age, had a 250 in 81 and have been looking to buy a good restored example. For the money being asked for a decent 350LC I've bought a brand new machine (sub 8K £s) I know there will be plenty of folks who don't like the idea but I think this bike resembles the old RD anyway and Its nice to ride something that looks individual. Hopefully will bring a vid out on my channel when the work is done, be interesting if thumbs up or down. Cheers for now.

Funny comment about the heavy Bonnie. I own one and added extra tyre pressure to transform the handling. Will soon pick up a brand spanking new 2017 Yamaha Abarth with Ohlins suspension. I question the idea of a steering damper. Better to go for the factory Ohlins upgrades with the Front Fork Spring Kit 9 (Yamaha UK (Europe) March 2021.) This would stop the noticeable front end dive according to motorcycle journalists from Britain, Germany and Italy at the launch of the bike 3 years ago in Sardinia. Yamaha are practically giving the bike away as the 2020 XSR900 is out here and no one wants the old 2017 version, except me. The springs are £143 plus fitting costs but easy enough to do with the right tools. The Ohlins Rear Shock STX 46 YA335 would transform the handling with two up, but that won’t solve the seat issue without the Deluxe Suede seat upgrade at £285. The rear shock is considered budget at £631 by Ohlins standards but I believe it will make the Cafe Racer even more stable in sweeping bends. They sell an even better Ohlins but that’s in excess of £1000. Not bothering to get the quick shifter. I question the level of skill required to use one. Much better to learn to blip without using the clutch lever. I can blip up or down with the Bonnie’s bullet-proof gearbox. It’s all very predictable and quick enough.

Great Review. I'm enthused by this bike, but it's not for me as I am 61 years old, 5'11 240lbs. I had a kawasaki Ninja 1000. It was a great bike but for me it's still a sport bike and uncomfortable on a trip. Traded it in on a Vulcan 900 Classic LT and I'm hooked on the ride and comfort as I don't care about speed anymore. Feet forward, no leaning on the handlebars and it weighs 657 lbs which gives it a smooth comfy ride. Moral to the story, when you reach the age of 60+ a cruiser is the way to go. Again thanks for the review.

Fantastic bike - love mine. 20,000 km as well. Suspension is my only gripe - really bumpy, coming from a cbr500r. Getting YSS shock and a cartridge kit put in at the moment - hope it makes it more compliant and comfortable over bumps on those longer, country rides over poor road surface.

GRoss I don’t find the suspension that bad actually, but had my dealer dial it in for me. It is however stiff compared to a Cbr 500 or for that matter my other bike (Tracer 900 gt). The only time the handling gets upset is mid corner hard whoops. Thanks for commenting.

Lots of insight in your video. And I love my MT09 for all the same reasons as you do. You nailed it when you say it's the best engine out there, perhaps right alongside it's little brother the CP2. I think the marketing term for the CP3 is a cross plane engine but that refers to the R1 and MT10 four cylinder engines that have the big ends at 0,90,180, and 270 degrees on the crank. What is unique about the CP3 and CP2 is that they are a desax engine with the crank offset from the cylinder bores, which might explain the torque and higher efficiency of these engines. The 09 series of bikes are great but not perfect. They really need better suspension and an ECU tune to soften the snatchy throttle. But if you do these mods, then you are rewarded with one of the best bikes on the road.

Thank you for making this vid. Great review. Practical information, and exactly what I was looking for. So typically with this bike the reviewers feel the need to say something interesting about a motorcycle that knocks it out of the park in every way. It’s like they need to make a talking point so they say things like “you wouldn’t want one because of the power, the fuel economy, or insert stupid criticism here. Name another bike that comes in below the 10,000 US dollar mark, has inverted front forks, adjustable preload and rebound on both front and rear suspension, doesn’t look like a jet ski, has abs and traction control, has personality, an exciting but predictable and linear power band, is light weight; and like you said is fully customizable. The only thing I disagree with you on is the seat. I’m excited for my Corbin seat. Im a little too tall for this bike and that seat crushes me and my girlfriend after an hour or 2.

@@sixthisoverdrive I couldn't agree more. If I'm on my own, I can easily ride for 7 hours with only the expected discomfort after a ride that long. Double up and I'm tapped after about an hour or two. Moving to this bike from my all too friendly SV650, I was a little worried that the power would be too much to handle, but it's so unthreatening. Also, have you noticed how long legged the gearing is? If I'm on a twisty road letting loose a little, i feel like i can hang in 4th gear and I have all of the power I need from 65 kph all the way to 115.

I use a dart fly screen with dark tint. Looks good and somewhat functional. Cuts the wind off the chest. Minimal and doesn't look ridiculous. Not many sporty screens to choose from. After a while with it on I'm so used to the look that it looks that it doesn't even look like an add on. Very glad I went with this shield. It's on for good, wouldn't even think of removing it.

Maga Abdurakhmanov when I first saw the previews I was excited. Z900 engine and chassis, and a classic look...what could go wrong? I went to the motorcycle show in January and my excitement went away. I was really disappointed how it looked in real life. The tank was really odd looking...kind of like a mushroom. It felt too much like sitting on a saw horse, where as the z900 puts you in the bike. I just did not feel good about that bike. That being said...I'd still like to ride one and see how it feels on the road. I think it has ticked all the boxes for the people that like that new classic look and feel, and that they will do quite well with it.

Went to a demo event today and rode a lot of what Yamaha makes. To get absolutely amazing damping quality in suspension, you pretty much have to buy an R6. It's that rock solid, super stable, firm yet supple unflappable feel. But the XSR suspension isn't bad at all. Could use better damping control for small sharp-edged rough stuff on the road surface. Springs could be softened a bit, maybe throw a lower spring rate set of coils in it. One of my biggest pet peeves about this bike? Stupid tank scallops don't fit anyone's legs and the fuel capacity should be 17L (4.5 gal) for cryin' out loud. Oh and luggage tie-downs? Go with Rok straps. They never loosen up.
@sixthisoverdrive
@sixthisoverdrive 6 лет назад
Lifted_Above. I don't mind the tank size for comfort at all, but what really bugs me is the price they put on generic panels. It's great that you could get new custom ones done up, but the price is ridiculous. The tank is a bit small, but you can easily get 2 hours riding out of it, so not nearly as bad as the fz 10. I have put on 294 kms on one tank, but it was getting close to dry and I was not breaking any speed records. For the price of this one could always upgrade the suspension and still have the all day comfort. Thanks for watching my vid. Stay tuned...I frankensteined my exhaust and am putting up a video with the experience and how it sounds soon.

I only have 1600kms on mine, but it has so far been great! the motor is as smooth as silk, and the tires are scrubbed right to the edges. They sound incredible with the Akrapovic carbon pipe, but I have to say the wind sucks, and the suspension are pretty generic parts bin stuff that I don't care for.. I will be upgrading that next.

Thank you for your long term review! I've just hit 10000 km on my 60th edition XSR900. I agree with the engine having power throughout the whole range. It pulls great almost everywhere in the registrar. I don't agree with the seat. For me the seat has a weird slope at the back, where the rear seat starts. That bump hurts my behind. I can drive for one hour before it starts hurting. I'm also fatter than you, Sixthisoverdrive. I don't agree that the bike shields you from the wind. Before the XSR, I had a KTM Superduke 990 and two Suzuki SV1000's and they shield you from the wind so much better. At 130km/h the XSR is unbearable. I installed a DART flyscreen to my bike, and while not being as ugly as the ones you link, it's also not that pretty.. But it helped a lot. Still not perfect though. I'm selling my bike though. What I really dislike is the bad vibration the engine produces (in every gear) when you reach 5500 RPM. It can be felt through the handlebar, foot pegs and seat. The mirrors become unusable because vibration makes 1 car behind you look like 2, 3 or 4 cars.. I'm happy that the bike is just the right for you, and really wishes it fit me too. So in love with the bike when I bought it, but after two long trips, and having put on new mirrors, handlebar and rubberized foot pegs, I give up. :-(

sixthisoverdrive DID VM 110 links 525 pitch on 2016-2019 xsr900. Same as Tracer, 2015-2018, but think you have 2018+ GT tracer ? This has to have a longer chain 118 links (same 525 pitch) due to longer swing arm. Gold is lovely, (who knew I’d say that about a chain !) and less prone to rust. Go for the rubber JT front sprocket. the plain one is noisier. Great vid, love your no nonsense approach.

Love your review, thanks for posting! How would you compare XSR900 with R nine T? Price differences are there of course, and old school air cooled opposing twin vs smooth triple. Different bikes but they are two of my top contenders. I grew up riding vintage 70’s beemers, but this XSR is quite intriguing!
@sixthisoverdrive
@sixthisoverdrive 6 лет назад
Jeremy Morse I haven't ridden the R nine T yet, but I would guess by everything that I've read or watched, that you are going to get a more classic feel out of the Beemer. Also, once you get rolling on the XSR it feels like a suped up naked, not classic at all. The front wheel tends to come up rrreeeaaallllyyy easy, and there is power everywhere. Just sitting on the r Nine t you feel like you are on a bit of a throw back, and my guess is you'd be feeling that extra $ in refinement.

@sixthisoverdrive 4 года назад
shrek sexy You got me! In my defence the z900RS wasn’t even a twinkle in daddy’s eye when this video came out. (It was announced that winter). On the center stand it would depend on how you ride. If you are an advanced rider who corners like the pros, then no as it will drag on n the ground. Most people it won’t affect, but that stand even touches down on my Tracer 900gt. It also takes away from the looks. What I did was bought a 75 dollars back wheel stand and the fancy rear stays to prop it up for maintenance. You can see more videos on the bike by subscribing. Also will be putting out a video within this week on my new Tracer gt and how they compare. (Still own the XSR). Thanks for watching.

It's funny as I'm out researching this bike, it hasn't changed, so your review from 2017 is still valid. :-) So thanks for this, it was just what I was looking for, because you covered traveling on the bike. I do mostly weekend touring, or three or four day tours featuring twisties where we stay in hotels. I'm on a big, heavy bike right now and it wears me out. Why do people say you can't tour on bikes in this middle weight class? What is magical about adding 120 pounds? Anyway, you will hate me, because I will add a shield and side cases. Shad has side case mounts for it that leave almost nothing behind when the cases are off. So that's cool. And www.unitgarage.com has a shield for it so well styled that you might even like it. I'll catch up to you on your newer videos. All my best.
