I've been wanting to try out a laser engraving tool for a while. I have a lot of project ideas for this xTool and I think you'll all help me too with suggestions!

I would strongly suggest an enclosure for it. It only takes a single moment of exposure from a stray reflection to cause permanent eye damage. Plus an enclosure would make proper ventilation easier.
@KainYusanagi

Also alignment would be way easier! It seems Peter has been reliably placing the crosshairs a bit to the right of where he needs to be.

Please please do this, there was a small pebble that must have landed onto our work surface (probably from having it near the floor and picking it up and placing it on the machine) and when thr laser hit it it reflected and my pop has a permanent spot in his vision now because of this. What we use now is not an enclosure but actually 4 lightweight broom heads that brush the surface as it works and also acts as a shield incase of any bounced light

I'm shocked you are allowed to sell these without an enclosure and a bunch of enclosure must be closed safety switches.

I applaud that you’ve ordered an enclosure, air vent, and honey comb. These open air diode lasers always make me nervous. I’ve been running a CO2 laser for the last 10+ years, and when I compare the amount of safety precautions and things built into my setup to these open-air diode machines I’ve seen become popular in recent years, it just boggles my mind how slack people are with the safety measures. Also glad you’ve gotten some better safety glasses. I’ve heard the cheapo ones that come with machines like these are barely more than colored plastic. Despite all that, I have heard positive things about the xtool machines. Hope you have fun with it!

This looks really cool and I'm looking forward to seeing future projects with it. I'm kinda surprised/disappointed the safety features don't come standard, though; I'd rather have to pay more to engrave cylindrical objects than pay more to see and breathe.

Tip to extend laser module life, try to burn/cut on lower power for longer rather then high power and faster, because they have can a really short lifespan at higher power (and they are expensive)

So one cool thing I've been doing with my laser is going to the craft store and getting 16x12 painting canvas' (any size that will fit in the laser area works for this). Using spray paint I put down my main color (say red) going both directions (top to bottom, left to right). Next is a layer of black spray paint done the exact same way. With that prepped, I went and found an image of Vader facing to the side, put it into Imag-R, cropped & resized it to the specs I want (typically a half inch less than the material), and then tell it that the material I'm using is Norton White tile painted Black. It will invert the image so that the darker spots are what comes out as the color under the black. Save the file, put it into Lightburn then make sure to enable pass through, set the power between 21-30% (depending on the strength of your laser) and a speed of around 1000/mms. This is a link to my ibb.co/6Hd1VjM - This is the Vader I just finished, I went lighter on the red to match an Obi-Wan I'd also done.

Engraving resin sounds like a terrible idea... So exactly something you would try😉
@Flatlander81
@Flatlander81 Год назад
The enclosure will help with the fumes and smoke but you'd probably be better served with an actual exhaust out of the building, a dryer vent and inline fan would do the trick and not break the bank. If you are wanting to get into acrylic you'll need to get a C02 laser, a K40 or something like that, the diode lasers just don't work on the correct wavelength to cut Acrylic properly.

I imagine you could "set" the flexible wood into a certain shape by filling the cavities with resin, or just wood glue. You could make very organic fluid shapes that way! How about a wooden hat? Maybe some fun armor, like a pauldron? Furniture would be awesome, but not sure how you would scale it up. Cutting positive and negative spaces of images in different colored materials/wood and then combining them like puzzle pieces? For extra flair, make them flexible. Privacy screens/shades for windows with decorative patterns that create fun shadows, lampshades, wine racks. I have a lot of ideas, but my favorite: Snakes have interesting scale patterns, do you think they would bend into the shape of a snek?
@nssheepster
@nssheepster Год назад
I would love to see living hinges set into place via resin, that sounds amazing. Would be interesting to see how it reacted to different methods as well. Cut, stabilizing resin, and then resin resin maybe? Or could you do the stabilizing before the cut without issue?

If you want a frosted glass effect, paint black tempera paint on the glass and then laser it. The paint washes right off and you get a frosted effect where it lasered. On my 10W laser I use 100 power 70mm/s speed. do some test patterns to dial in a look you like on your specific laser. I do pint glasses all the time with my rotary attachment. The honeycomb will help a lot with reducing smoke residue on cuts.
@tomb34536
@tomb34536 Год назад
You can also replicate this by laying a wet piece of tissue paper over the glass and then engraving your pattern, leaves behind white frosted glass where the laser engraves.

I really feel like having at least 3 pairs of goggles for guests and signs that say "if the laser is on you must have goggles on" is necessary either way. You can't be too safe I suppose but relying on an enclosure feels like relying on one of those safety stops for buzz saws rather than general shop safety, you know? That being said, he absolutely needs a fume extractor so it may as well be laser safe

Something that really helped with my laser was a test square, on the horizontal line i had speed, on the vertical line i had power in increments of 10%. This will give you a grid of speed/power and the color it makes. I can also suggest lightburn to you. It has a free month trial but i think it's definately worth buying.

I've done several things with lasers and it's always best to keep a notebook with the material and settings. Doing pictures on glass it's always best to mirror the picture that way the unpainted portion faces you and you can do a contrast color like an off white to give it an old timey look.

Thanks for the review. It's nice to see a review from someone who hasn't run a lot of lasers before since that is the boat I'm in. I've been looking at xTool lasers for a while and I really like their new 40W module but mostly because of the better integrated air assist input. When I watched the installation of the air assist nozzle on other channels, it seemed easy to mess up. I probably wouldn't need the 40W and right now it only comes as an upgrade kit so you have to buy a 5/10/20W kit and buy the 40W upgrade separately so I'm waiting for either new 5/10/20W modules with the integrated air assist or a 40W kit.
