G'day everyone - Thanks for watching! I reckon the adjustments made with the timing and the vac advance made way more of a difference than the jetting. It's still way rich - I reckon I should be running 68s in the primaries and 75s in the secondaries. What do you think? What are you guys running in your Clevos? Are you running a hotter plug? I think I need to bin that dizzy too bite the bullet and get some Ice Ice Baby!

Bloke if you swap your front metering block with one from a 780 vac sec , you will have much cleaner idle off idle response to even small throttle angle changes will be raunchy . Personally if you run a dual plane intake then use a smaller jeton the shallow side of the plenum , with a 2 or 3 step richer jet on the deeper side of the plenum . I went 68 Shallow primary 71 on the front deep side of plenum with mixture screw on shallow plenum side at 1 turn and a quarter , with the deeper plenum side mixture screw at 1 turn and a half . With shallow plenum secondary jetting being at 75 , with rear deep plenum at 78 jet.i also lay a slight back cut on the primary blades where they interact with the idle fuel supply port on the baseplate with a slightly ported transition circuits . The only other 2 ways that I've found work for leaning the mix is dropping the fuel level in the bowls , and perhaps increasing the volume of air flowing down the emulsion tubes via the low and high speed air bleeds . On single plane intakes then yes matching jets for both primaries as with the secondaries . If you look up the Ivan Tighe cam catalogue and check out the cam profile I designed myself Dean Tighe ground it up for me and we labelled it Cleveland solid #764. Also with your xw perhaps try the same trick I used for low idle vacuum conditions , in my XD I used an XD 6 cylinder brake booster . By virtue of its smaller volume , the huge mechanical cam still generated sufficient manifold vacuum to completely sweep the booster , even with lower than 9 inches of mercury , the brake pedal always felt like it was close to stock for feel and effort , the total difference between large volume V8 booster with limited vacuum assist , and the smaller volume 6 cyl booster being swept clean by the fastér idling cammed up clevo are chalk and cheese .

G'day Jason! Mate thank you for such a detailed comment chock full of info! I haven't heard much about the different jetting depending on the side of the plenum - sounds good in theory and I might test it out and film the results (will prob have another crack at tuning in the spring/summer) - by then I will hopefully have learnt a thing or two about air bleeds and making sure my floats are bang on. Although I agree with a lot of the comments here that an O2/Wideband would save a bit of trouble - I like the idea of trial and error the old school way! Love the brake booster idea too - and when i get a chance will check out that cam! Do you still have any of your clevo powered Fords? Thanks for watching - hope you enjoyed the vid and thanks again for sharing all that great info! Cheers - Marc

Hi again mate i put an aem wideband on the xe and it was still way to rich at wot at cruise and idle dropped more jet sizes made no difference so i decided it was just to big . So i bought a quickfuel ss 680 vac sec and omg what a difference it made its like a different car to drive no more jerking at low speed and it revs so much cleaner and crisper than before best thing i ever did straight out of the box it was near perfect pv 6.5 primary 68 sec 78 jets secondary spring purple. The only things i have changed is it was still to rich at wot so i dropped sec jets to 74 and changed the secondary spring to a white one to make secondary open faster its perfect now afr at wot 11.5-12.0 part throttle 13.5 cruise 14.0-14.7 idle 13.5 hope little update helps cheers

Hi Wenzel! Nice mate! I think i will try the hotter '5' plugs over summer and jet down a little bit. Lol at the spark plug. Normally something falls down and the extractors eat it. You find it.......after a while. Also set your float levels as well I set mine just touching the sight hole, oh and please keep an eye on that filter. Some thing that can leak fuel right beside the spark generating device makes me nervous.

G'day mate! Factory style distributor’s don’t have full advance until they’re up around 4500-5500. Also, the amount of advance is dependent on the compression, fuel and cam specs. But 10 deg advance base and 30 deg advance full is a good place to start for most pushrod v8’s. To tune the carb effectively you need an o2 sensor in the exhaust and a vacuum gauge. Then drive around for a few days and see what conditions are lean etc. I’d start with 70’s primary and secondary. Have a look at progression ignition. They have a totally programmable distributor that doesn’t require a brain box or any other add ons. It’s essentially the whole ignition side of a normal efi but for a carb engine. Great product that’s going to revolutionise carb engine tuning.
@MeatballGarage
@MeatballGarage 3 года назад
G'day Nathan! Thanks for the considerate reply mate. I didn't know that about the factory style dizzys - mine is a electronic job from Summit (needs to go TBH) so might be a bit different. The bump i gave it (combined with the vac advance hookup fix) gave it some good life - but there is more in it. Agree a wide band would make tuning way easier - but I want to give it a go the old school way first by reading the plugs etc. It doesn't get driven much these days and I enjoy the problem solving process. When it warms up a bit ill grab some more jets and go from there. Will check out that ignition mob too - all for an upgrade in that dept! Cheers mate and thanks for watching & again for the comment! @@MeatballGarage reading plugs is always the very best way to tune, it’ll tell you exactly what’s going on in your engine. The only problem is that it can’t tell you how the engine is going when you’re holding gear under load, or mid gear (especially for vacuum secondary carb tuning). That’s where the afr and vacuum gauge make all the difference, all the steady state, or “cruise” conditions.

@MeatballGarage 8 месяцев назад
G'day mate - I actually think i had too much timing in it. I backed it off not long after this video and it stopped the carb backfire. I believe if it is running too lean this can happen too. To sort that out you might need to check your squirter/pump shot (might need a bigger size) and make sure there is enough fuel in your fuel bowls as well. I have also read that Vac leaks can also cause this. Have you experienced this on your car? Any work/changes been made to your set up? Cheers Marc
@boss351gt6
@boss351gt6 3 года назад
When you do your initial timing you should have no vac advance connected and a plug on the manifold side. When you advance your distributor you need to check your idle RPM and adjust it from the carb (double check transition slot adjustment cause this will make it pig rich if it's too exposed). On a 351c I would use a 650DP or a 780 vac sec and you'll get a cleaner idle, looks like you've got an 850dp.
@MeatballGarage
@MeatballGarage 3 года назад
G'day mate! Yep when I did the timing it was with vac. adv. disconnected. I measured it with it plugged in just to see what it was doing (and if it was working!) You are close - its a 750DP. It might be a bit on the big side - but with some further tweaks i reckon i can get it pretty close. I think you are onto something with the transition slot adjustment - Will check this out!! Great tip - Cheers!!!

Also the leak came from the bung where you would usually fit up the fuel pressure gauge - It was on the underside and wasn't tight so just pissed out fuel. When I found the leak I farked it up by rounding off the hex head that would have tightened the bung. Ah well, live and learn.. Cheers!

I'm having the same problem with my 351 Cleveland running rich. I just put a quick fuel carburetor on it and the plugs are all black. The timing is set at 10° before it topped dead center which it's always liked a few more degrees of timing any suggestions?

G'day Lorenzo - I reckon its a combination of timing and jetting. I picked up a lot more response and better (and less fat) idle by playing with the timing. I am still too rich on cruise and WOT so will play with my Jets this summer. Id give your Clevo a bit more timing, I don't think there is a magic number, just give your Clevo the timing that it wants. if its happier more advanced (and doesn't ping or backfire) then give it to it I say! How big is your carb and what are the Jets you are using? Is your Clevo stockish, mild or a hotty? Thanks for watching and hope you get her running mint soon!!

@@MeatballGarage It’s a 600 CFM, quick fuel carb with vacuum, secondaries and electric choke. I feel the Jets are too big and need to get a size or two smaller. Plus, I’m not sure about the power valve that may need swapping out too. Yeah I may need to tinker with the timing. But it’s run so good for so many years at 10° before top dead center. I also noticed that when you turn vacuum diaphragm that alters the timing to. Many people may not know it, but you can adjust the advance by turning the snout of the vacuum advance. I did this man the thing took off like it was an after burner, so I backed it off to where it was originally.

Hi mate, what fan and radiator set up do run in the XW?
@MeatballGarage
@MeatballGarage 2 года назад
G'day Dennis! Mate I think the radiator is an XB V8 one - its not super thick but is a 3 core. I think the XC-XE cores are a little thinker from memory (but could be wrong). The fan is a big single off an FG Falcon - it was 17 inches or there abouts from memory. Its pretty quiet too compared to the twin ones off an AU/EL. The fan is controlled by a thermo switch that sits in the hole just under the thermostat - Fans on at 90c - off at 85c - running a 170f thermostat. With this combo the car has never cooked, and on my old mech gauge never gotten hotter than say 195/200f on a hot day in traffic before the fan would cool and maintain temp. On the freeway it would sit between 180-190f. There are some things with the cooling system I actually want to address (and make videos on) over summer. It could be a tiny bit more efficient. What are you running mate? Cheers for watching and the comment! Marc

@@MeatballGarage Hi Marc, in my XY I’ve got a GT type 3 core copper rad with 2x 12” spal fans. It works well (in central QLD) but is fairly noisy, and sits very close to the belt. That’s why I was keen to know, it’s industrial fan one end, nice exhaust on the other

@@dennis_mackay Ahh there you go! I have heard those Spal ones can be noisy - but at least they are getting the job done, especially up your way in the heat! OEM fans seem to be great at moving air and not making your car sound like a hovercraft - but not too sure what might fit that GT style 3 core.. hmmm. Just as a side note - what thermostat do you run?

I'm running 76 up front 84 in back and mine is still showing lean on the plugs I'm running a 750cfm brawler double pump with a single plain intake at about 900ft above sea level I may pull it off and go 850 to see what that does as the Cleveland is a 408 now
