what probably helps with that is the fact that these are probably shot in an another dimension, one full of chrome, white plastics, ocean blue, bright orange, and cool clothes
I always think that. Fashion today is literally like the most generic and cookie cutter since probably the 70s like before subcultures were fully a thing.. like ppl have largely lost their unique tastes and individuality so we're never gonna move into the future if people just keep re-hashing the same ugly trends and obsessing over 90s nostalgia over and over again to the point where the past 5 years just feel like the 90s but in current time with all the stupid re-boots of the shows from then and all the baggy dull-colored clothes from the early 90s..
Exactly, It was short lived and never became as prominent in society as it should have been, there was lots of concepts for architecture and technology of that time that never came to fruition, by 2006 the hipster culture came along and people decided they'd rather live in a world that emulated the past rather than one that moved towards the future
Fashions are cyclical. I'm noticing that there's this "futuristic" aesthetic in advertising, commercials, and music videos that's been gaining traction the last couple of years. The newest video on my profile, "The 2010s Aesthetic", captures this style.
People are just so angry and selfish these days and I feel like that reflects in a lot of culture now like it makes fashion feel boring and annoying and shows and music etc. And like there's almost no uniqueness anymore and everyone tries to look and talk the same way more than ever before and it's not even cute like they all try to act like the same stupid person.
Yeah, and Toonami. I'm actually tryna buy the rights to Swayzak (a one-off villain from Toonami) and write a series of novels about him... I've had a crush on him since I was six and I want more people to know about him.
I miss this. I was just a small kid but I remember my mom dressing me in this pleather pink jacket and flare pants with matching hat and sunnies for school. Everything was so creative back then! I miss everything about it! We totally need to get back to this lol people are so copy and paste today. Everyone looks exactly the same with no variation. We need to let our inner creativity out!
Yeah I've been noticing that for the past like 5 years people have been kind of melting together in their fashion to the point where it's like subcultures or alternate aesthetics are hardly even a thing anymore.
Ah yes!! That brief pre-9/11 period between 1998-2000. Awesome time and era. Only worries was the Y2K bug which just became a joke to most ppl. The internet was a fascinating unknown frontier that everyone wanted to surf and see what cool stuff they could find. Fuel prices were between 79-99 cents a gallon. Skating rinks played non-stop La Bouche, NSync, BSB, Destinys Child, etc. And the songs Mambo #5 and Smooth by Santana and Rob Thomas was everywhere Man oh man. I miss this era.
@@Yuli_Ban I'd say 1998-2003 is the Y2K era. 2003 was far more similar to 1998 than to 2008 despite being chronologically equidistant. Mid to late 1997 was like the transition *to* the Y2K Era and early to mid 2004 was the transition *out* of the era and hence significant Y2K influences during both non-Y2K era periods. Yes, you did see *some* Y2K influences as early as 1995 and as late as 2005 but not many.
When I was about 10 years old one of my relatives got that home security system from ADT. I saw them set it up one time and I was actually severely disappointed that it didn't cover the walls in ones and zeros
I know exactly what you mean , like people metion y2k those fucker think of the 03-06 of the 2000s with glitter and fur coat and anything relate like Britney spears , paris hilton, hillary duff, olson twins
I was born in 1995 and here's a timelapse on how I experienced different era's: 1995-1997: only thing i Remember is cheesy 80s and 90s music. 1997-2003: the y2k era where there was this cool blend between 90's and new millenium fashion allot of breakbeat and trance and allot of see trough plastic! 2003-2007: minimalistic era there were all those minimalistic logo's and bright colors (green, orange, yellow,..) ! allot of body silhouette's i call it minimalistic/pre-hipster mid 00's era the music was also pretty minimalistic but in a satisfying sunny way.. 2008-2012: this was the last good era imo the "modern HD era" allot of complex stuff and full of fresh new idea's and this is also the true hipster era on it's peak, electronic music was refreshing and new! Artists like Skrillex and avicii come in my mind the color of the music goes a bit more darker and everything needs to look "black, cool and detailed" allot of cool graphics but it's def less happier then the previous era's but still nice! 2013-2016: the mainstream EDM and iPhone era, here's where everyone began to look the same and music became fake happy or fake "cool" music also here's where the fake poser hipsters came from imo they ruined it.. In the meanwhile i went into seapunk and vaporwave as an escapism to this era because i hated it.. 2017-2019: vaporwave became more mainstream and 80's and 90's made a huge comeback, but it's not the real deal.. Also this is the "future minimalistic era" with lame bleached colors and graphical art At this time social media had such an impact on the generations who grew up with it that it seems they don' t notice they're all the same. i guess i'm getting old.. I think in the 2020's era there will be a huge comeback of the y2k and the mid 00's minimalistic era but with the right futuristic technology this will also be the era that all these hipsters and being unique vintage trends will die and the focus will be back on true modernism and minimalism. Also music genres like 90s trance, ghetto house, footwork, electro house and breakbeat will make a comeback..
the 80s revival/nostalgia isn't new tho, it's been here since the 2000s it just doesn't wanna go away. Look at the fashion in late 00s/early 10s, major 80s vibes with all the neon, colorful stuff, and the general vibe is just "tacky"
@@user-vi4xy1jw7e Probably just referring to the 60s/70s mid century revival aesthetic that's been common since the early 2000s (peak years imo were 2000-2003). The colour profile (like the orange and green) remained popular in the mid 2000s but fell off from the mainstream trend soon afterwards.
I want commercials like this they look more appealing to the eye. The commercials now are boring and calming it's the minimalist look. I like these because they are less calming and boring and more eleberant and colorful.
I was born in 1999. Looking back on these feels creepy. It’s like everything seems so familiar, yet I can’t seem to identify anything at all. The vibes feel good, but exist trapped in that bygone era i will never be able to explore fully.
Agreed. I remember getting a faint taste of this in my very early memories and from the products and clothes my cousins had bought. This time has a mystique to, not too old that it feels like it's intended for a completely distant generation but still before my time. Like a secondhand childhood.
@@solomontrump YES!! And we were all scared of machines, not terrorists and politicians... now all evil AIs in media are FEMALE (female AIs were HEROES in the Y2K era) and we don't have any good characters like Swayzak, the Computer, Brainiac, and more...
Omg Steve from Dell!! 😍 I thought he was so cute! When my mom took me to buy a computer I secretly was hoping he would be at the store. Lol I totally forgot about that!
I was a teen at the turn of the millennium, and was blessed to have early access to computers and the internet. This was such a fun time to grow up in. The hope and optimism of the future was exciting and everything felt so promising. It cannot be overstated how much the tragedy of 9/11 changed absolutely everything. The future and the technology it brought became sinister and borderline hostile. The utopia we were promised turned to dystopia. It’s heartbreaking honestly. I try not to look back at the past with nostalgia colored glasses because I think everyone looks back at their youth the same way. But objectively it feels like there was a tremendous cultural shift at the end of Y2K. I really just want a transparent orange iPhone.
Interesting perspective, and I guess it shows how it was perceived by people of different ages. I was younger at the time, and didn't notice that "darker" shift described. By the mid 2000s, the Y2K aesthetic had morphed into the similarly-futuristic Frutiger Aero aesthetic which gave the premise of a brighter future, which did feel possible at that time.
"Internet Appliance" has gone from a device that allows you to access the internet to literally any appliance that gives you the privilege of being spied on.
Right like in the late 90s early 2000s stuff from the 80s look dated but with our stuff in our generation it just aged so well. Even some of the fashion nowadays is inspired from this era lol
These ads are almost like looking into an alternate universe. There’s a chance we wouldn’t have smartphones if not for 9/11. The urgency of communication and helplessness of the crisis inspired social media and much of the modern internet directly and indirectly in the aftermath. Technology would be advanced as it is now but possibly compartmentalized in the same way we saw in the y2k/pre iPhone era. The Apple Watch might have even been the follow up to the iPod in that timeline but we can only speculate.
Omg!!! I remember that commercial that starts around 3:01 very well, although I haven’t seen it almost 20 years. I remember all of but mainly the guy that screams “relax” like some idiot.
Wish I could give this a thumbs up more than once. I loved my HitClips. Still have all my Nickelodeon magazines from the mail subscription stashed at my mum's house. Good times
HitClips were awesome!! I also loved the Warner Bros. Studio Store in NYC and at Paramus Park in Paramus, NJ. It's where I got my Space Ghost plushie from.
2:12 OMG no lie. I was a freshman in college when U2’s Beautiful Day came out and I had a dormmate who would watch this song everyday it came on MTV or VH1 in the Student Lounge and turn it up. As soon as I heard the chorus kick in at 2:12 I immediately rush back to my dormmate’s voice 🎤 singing this song, badly (and happily). It’s almost eery how much the chorus sounds like his shrill 19 year old voice in cargo pants. It was an optimistic window of time - the y2k moment/era. It was a unique moment (the pop culture and the music really capture it). It was a year before 9/11.
Thank you for sharing. I was a baby when it came out. I find it so interesting the way in which we can both look back upon this time period with a feeling of intense nostalgia- but within totally different contexts. The late 90s and early 2000s conjure for me memories of my early childhood, and the innocence that came along with it. For you, it is the recollection of the exciting time wherein you were entering adulthood. Isn't it strange that two people of such different ages could sort of bond over something like that.
The thumbnail is taken from the music video of the song called "No Scrubs" by a female musical band called "TLC" Just to let everyone know. Thank me later!
I remember pissing my purple unicorn shorts in Blockbuster because the manager couldn't find the bathroom key. My dad still let me get candy & a Sailor Moon VHS tho, good times.
I was born when that Tootsie Pop commercial came out, but I found it on a tape of Dexter's Laboratory on Cartoon Network and laughed my ass off!! "They'll eat your home, they'll eat your homework, they'll eat you!!" That SO sounds like something that'd be in the show!!
I remember when this aesthetic looked futuristic. Actually... It still looks futuristic! Is there anything today that looks more futuristic? I don't even know what's modern anymore :(
Willingly watching the same ads I so desperately wanted to skip back then. I especially like how it's all been recorded from VHS... The lo-fi definitely makes the asthetic more depressing for me, knowing it's gone by now. Kinda like hearing oldies playing in another room
My parents watched 2001: A Space Odyssey on January 1, 2001. I was four. I remember how weird it was. Looking back at it, the '60s futurism we saw in the film kinda reminds me of Y2K. HAL reminds me of the Computer from Courage the Cowardly Dog, who was based on him. Four year old me loved the Stargate scene. So colourful...
I was born in 98 too, only thing I hate that I was toddler during the early 2000s and I don't remember much. Wish I was a teenager or young adult during these times 😭
