In this video I repair a really deaf receiver problem and troubleshoot the tuner board the issues that I now think has been caused by a faulty switching transistor. I also try to cover the basics of how the receiver front end works. This is part two of a series of videos fixing this radio. This is a component level electronic fault finding and repair video. Hi Houdi I hope all is well. No problem on the equivalents, the Toshiba pin diodes do seem to be a common point of failure in quite a number of radios and I am hoping these Infineon devices hold up a little better.

The cheap signal generator will serve the purpose it will give S9 and you can give weak signal for peaking the stages cheap and cheerful but works for me and I’ve got the Marconi 2955

Hi Andy, Great comment, the 2955 was quite a thing in its day and is still very useful for this type of radio gear.

I still have the radio used in the video however I am not planning on selling it at this time. If I come across one I will let you know.

looking at the diodes i can see a possible user error, but looking at the antenna switch relay area and that solder looks not very clever. along with the previous repair could it be that you are actually cleaning up someone other 'top tech's mistakes ?? amazes me how such high end radios get damaged by such low end users ( no offence intended directly to the owner) i expect a 30/40 year old CB to have seen it's fair share of careless owners but something like this you'd think would be treated like a member of the family, it's coming on and the outlook is promising for sure, learning more each time i watch..

Hi Mark, Yes I have to agree with you mate. It looks to me like someone has tried to sort this out in the past and I think that they have replaced the pin diode but has not managed to fix the main fault. I am getting the feeling that it's the driver transistor for the relay that is not switching the RX relay correctly which in turn has blown the receiver when it was keyed up. I'm still looking at it. Have you got any reed relays or reed switches?

@@M0XFXUK Reed Switches i think i have, i have bundles of stuff and stuff in RAACO cabinets i've not even looked at yet. sure i've seen reed switches in among it all..

Would any diode survive the rf coming into it though with this fault with the antenna switching…unlikely 🥴

Hi there. Yes I completely agree, good point and comment. The problem as I see it is if you strengthen the current carrying capacity of the diodes to much then it's likely that something else would fail further down into the receiver under this kind of fault condition. That being said I do think that the pin diodes in these radios could do with a little more strength i.e. slightly higher current capability as they are also known for failing under apparently normal operation conditions. I guess only time will tell. Thank you for the comment.👍
