In this video I troubleshoot a really deaf receiver problem which I think has been caused by reverse RF power being feed into the antenna socket I also try to cover the basics of how the receiver front end works. This is part one of a series of videos fixing this radio. This is a component level electronic fault finding and repair video. Please feel free to leave comment as we’d love to hear from you.

Great video John , I had the 100 watt version of the mk5 .... I couldn't get on with it at all , I went for the FT-2000 in the end 👍

Yeah I think these are a bit like Marmite, you love them or you hate them. I am still on the fence as I have never operated one so if I manage to get it fully operational again I may do a bit of a review.

Hi John, a lot of the cheaper signal generators eg. Feeltech FY6800/6900s dont have an "SSB" modulated opion , only AM , FM PSK , they dont even scale in DBM , which is probably why they are more affordable....what exactly is the SSB modulation function on that Rhode and Swartz,? Cheers John

Hi Andrew, I have fancy test gear but for what I am doing in this video I really don't need it. A simple sig gen will work just fine. I should make a video going through this. Thank you for pointing this out.

My unit keeps flashing the frequency and when I use the main the radio makes alot of noise. I can send a video, any ideas?

Hi Ryan, I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing problems with your FT-1000MP. I haven't encountered the specific fault you're describing; however, when you see a flashing frequency display, it's usually related to the PLL not locking up or the local oscillator not being present. These radios are quite complex, so it's difficult to pinpoint the issue without having it on test gear. May I ask where you're based?
