Portable operation is a crucial component of ham radio that allows operators to enjoy their hobby in a variety of locations. The Yaesu FT-818 is a popular portable all-mode transceiver that is frequently used by amateur radio operators for this purpose. There are several reasons why portable operation is important in ham radio, especially when using the FT-818.
Firstly, portable operation provides greater flexibility in terms of location. Rather than being confined to a fixed location, portable operation enables operators to set up their radio station in a variety of places, such as parks, mountaintops, and other outdoor areas. This not only adds to the enjoyment of the hobby by allowing for a change of scenery, but also increases the likelihood of making contacts that may not be possible from a home station due to factors such as terrain or interference.
Secondly, portable operation with the FT-818 can be an essential component of emergency preparedness. During natural disasters or other emergency situations, traditional communication infrastructure can become unreliable or even non-existent. Portable operation enables operators to have a means of communication that is independent of traditional infrastructure and can be used to relay important information in such situations.
Thirdly, portable operation with the FT-818 can be a fun and rewarding challenge. Operating with limited power and equipment requires operators to be resourceful and creative in their approach. It can also provide a sense of adventure and exploration as operators seek out new and interesting locations to operate from.
Fourthly, portable operation with the FT-818 can be an excellent way to introduce others to the hobby of amateur radio. By setting up a portable station in a public location, operators can generate interest and curiosity among passersby who may not be familiar with amateur radio. This can lead to new contacts and even new hams entering the hobby.
In conclusion, portable operation with the FT-818 is an important aspect of ham radio that offers numerous benefits, such as greater flexibility in location, emergency preparedness, a fun and rewarding challenge, and an opportunity to introduce others to the hobby. By taking their radio station on the go, operators can broaden their horizons and explore new locations while remaining connected to the amateur radio community.

I just got the 818 2 weeks ago, probably one of the last new 818s in the World, I got it from Martin Lynch in the U.k. I am impressed with the little radio, the receiver on it is good, lacks filtering of course but you can add it later if needed, what struck me is how quite the receive audio is. I like being able to operate the radio with the strap around my neck and the controls facing me as I look down. I hope that if Yaesu do come out with a new QRP rig that they don't stray far from the 818, I would not like a full sdr bulky radio like the 705, I'd like no SDR, don't want to have to worry about breaking the screen, should have Fast charging lithium battery, USB-C, Built in sound card, Tuner option, 2m, 70cm option. No bluetooth, No Wifi and No Fusion. Just keep it simple. Maybe a smaller more rugged radio like the Kx2 that weighs very little with reduced current consumption and 10 watts. Options to keep costs down not one fully loaded expensive box with features not everyone wants. I've heard the audio in videos of the IC-705 and the X-6100 and they seem to sound harsh and noisy like my old 7300 so I'd rather stick to superhet for now for that reason alone, full sdr seem to be quite noisy unless you spend bucket loads on a high end sdr. I have the FTDX-10 and the audio is so much better than the 7300, the DX10 noise floor is also much lower, I believe being a superhet radio is mostly to do with the super good audio, yaesu really got the DX10 right, they seem to have nailed it when it comes to audio quality. I like how yaesu seem to have tailored the voltage for the NiMh pack on the 818 because it seems to output full 4 watts until the battery almost dies. It's not the best battery of course and I intend to swap it out for lithium, maybe 18650s with BMS or no BMS and just pop the cells in my 18650 charger. One thing I don't like is the AA battery holder, it's a real pain to get the AA cells in and out. I was thinking of Turnigo 3S 2500 Mah transmitter pack but they can't be got, there doesn't seem to be stock anywhere but this battery seems to be the perfect size for the 818. I'm not sure I'd find a 18650 cell holder that would fit in the 818, I have seen videos of some that will and some that won't. A diy 3000 Mah of 18650 cells will fit in the 818 battery compartment and give the same run time as the LiFeP04 3000 Mah.

One thing that I can say about that little radio. It’s an awesome receiver. I have other radios e.g., FT-891 which is a great radio as well. But this little guy gets more use in my SWL world. It’s just easy to use, it’s a shack in a box, and the reception is amazing.

I'm getting used to the Rx on this radio, I like the 857D a bit with it's filter.

Thank you. This was great I enjoyed it and learned a lot. Recently picked up the 818 and am looking to develop it into a capable man-pack to compliment my preparedness effort

I bit my lip and sold my 818. Anxiously waiting for Yaesus announcement.

You think they will have a QRP rig soon? Maybe Yaesu thinks the 891 will be ur QRP rig for the 857 was never replaced.

@@frankwc0o the 817 has to much of a legacy not to replace. Also Japan has power limited license classes with huge a qrp side of the hobby. I remain hopeful.

@@forgetyourlife That makes sense. I'm sure the IC705 is doing well in Japan.

@@frankwc0o The 891 is an amazing radio, probably one of the most underrated radios in Amateur radio. The receiver is excellent and the audio is excellent too via headphones and it has a really low noise floor, something I can't say about the 7300 and one of the reasons I sold it was the poor audio quality and noisy receiver. I wouldn't like the 818 to change a lot, I like the form factor, I find the 705 to be quite bulky and I really don't want/need SDR when portable/in the field etc. I think Icom made a mistake with the 705 only having 1 fully loaded version instead of more options like wifi/bluetooth/gps etc etc, I don't care for D-star and it's cumbersome to use, I wouldn't be bothered with Fusion either though it's the easiest to use of all the digi modes it's just not what I need when portable. I've had a lot of fun since I got the 818 with a whip antenna, the DL1DN, it works really well for what it is, you do have to hold the radio because it uses the human as counterpoise but it works. If Yaesu were to change the form factor I'd like them to release a rugged Kx2 style radio that is as compact and light but with proper lithium battery that can be charged fast in the radio via USB C. Built in sound card, optional Tuner, 2m, 70cm. Kx2 style power consumption would be good also. Maybe swappable battery but not like the 705 the way it sticks out looks stupid and awkward.

Please remove the medic patch from your radio bag. It could cost someone valuable time when searching for a medic bag in a high stress situation.
