My good friend Joel, KC4WZB, loaned me his brand new Yaesu FTdx10. When I say loaned, I mean he picked it up at Ham Radio Outlet and brought it straight to me, so I could unbox it and shoot a series of videos, exploring the capabilities of this latest offering from Yaesu.
This is the second in a series of videos I will be producing to show the capabilities of the Yaesu FTdx10. In this video we take a look at the receive audio equalization and shelving options in the FTdx10.
Subscribe and click the notification bell to ensure that you don’t miss the other videos in this series. I will be covering TX audio settings, CW operation, memory channels, accessing the 60-meter band channels, and more, in this series.
I hope you enjoy this video and find it helpful. If you find my channel informative and entertaining, I hope you will consider joining my support group by clicking on: www.patreon.com/N4HNH There are 3 levels of support, including exclusive content. Patreon team members gain insight from our technical discussions and internal polls. They also have the opportunity to view certain videos before they are released for public viewing.
N4HNH Radio has a Web site, where you can purchase T-shirts with some of the sayings you might hear in the videos. Some of the more prominent videos are featured there as well as a page geared toward ham radio training. Go to: www.n4hnhradio...
Another great way to help support this channel is to click subscribe.

You are welcome! But I must credit the Patreon team long-haulers. Without their significant yearly financial support, these videos wouldn’t exist, or hundreds of others. There are 98 tutorial videos for the FTdx10 alone. And there are around 40 more FTdx10 videos that are situational in nature. That’s just one of the radios I cover. But mostly my channel is about operating techniques, many of which can be applied to other radios, even radios from other manufacturers.

You really do a nice job showing how to align the radios vast capability with the signal conditions you are working with. I finally picked up the DX10 a couple days ago and am incredibly impressed with this transceiver. As you said, keep the signal at the low end of the receiver's dynamic range, and use the filter shift, width and a touch of DNR. The results are just amazing. Thanks for showing this off. Maybe I will get used to the 3D display, someday!

Excellent series of videos! As a new FTDX10 owner, these are invaluable. One thing I've noticed is that as I set ATT, IPO, RF gain, and DNR to handle the noise floor, the S-meter reading for a signal changes significantly. Now I'm not sure how to give a signal report with the various noise-control features engaged.
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio 3 месяца назад
The S-meter is calibrated with AMP1 enabled and zero attenuation, at 14.2MHz. Don’t trust an S-meter except for relative readings. I cover how I give S-units in several videos. Some of the videos aren’t public. Videos 1-39 for the FTdx10 are public. But there are 97 total, in the tutorial series, thus far. There are another 40 that are situational - not tutorial. The exclusive content is at: www.PATREON.com/N4HNH This channel teaches operating techniques. There are around 50 playlists. You can learn much by watching the other videos. There is a Learning Ham Radio playlist. Also, N4HNHradio.com has a training page. Watch the video entitled, “Decibels, S-meters, Amplifiers, and Gain.” Also read the video descriptions. The description for that video shows how I discern S-meter readings.

Turning the radio off and on shouldn’t affect it. But, the band stacks remember. So, if you power back up to a different band stack that has a different shift setting, that might be. But if all you do is cycle the power and come right back where you were when you noticed the problem, that makes no sense. Is this for FTdx10? If it is, scratch what I said about the shift knob. Thanks for the videos! Quick question: you said rotate the Shift knob CCW if you hear a high, tinny station. You were on LSB so would it be CW on USB?
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio 2 года назад
It seems confusing but you still rotate the Shift knob counterclockwise to knock out high-pitched QRM, no matter whether USB or LSB. But, if you hear high-pitched QRM in LSB mode, the other station is below you in frequency. It’s the reverse of that in USB mode. If you hear a low “honking” sound, rotate Clockwise. Again, it doesn’t matter whether it’s LSB or USB. But, in LSB mode, the low “honking” sound will be from QRM that is above you. It is reverse of the in USB mode. So, to make it easy to remember, I just tell everyone to rotate the Shift counterclockwise for high-pitched QRM and clockwise for low-pitched. But yes, where it’s coming from depends upon the mode. 73, de N4HNH

A blinking TX indicator means you’re trying to transmit on a frequency that is outside of the amateur bands. Also, if you try to transmit on 60m using the VFO, instead of recalling 60m from memory bank 5, you will get a blinking TX light. 73, de N4HNH

As far as the att setting, when I have it at zero, my noise floor is 3-4. When I set it to -6 dB, my noise floor drops to zero. Since I'm starting at around 3, it seems like attenuating by 6 dB is overdoing it a little. Kind of wish there was a 3 dB atten. So, that said, is it better to do -6, or stay with none?

losing rx fidelity as a way to improve rx only works on stations which have no fidelity to begin with (are very sharp & narrow) On stations (being received) which have fidelity /nice passband - losing fidelity on receive has a negative overall effect as the components containing intelligibility are lost. Narrowing bandwidth is not an all case solution for all ssb signals.

You cannot go wrong with the 5000. If you spend the extra on the mu-tuners, it will hang right with a 101. Plus the 5000 preselectors work on 60 meters. The 101 preselector won’t work on 60 meters. And the 5000 has IPO2, to further improve S/N ratio. Until the most recent update for the 101, the DNR was not as good as the DNR in the 5000. That said, if you like a waterfall, go for the 101. Greetings dear friend. It has been the question of many Radio Amateurs in the world and I would like to hear your sincere and technical opinion if possible because this has become a worldwide debate with controversial opinions. Are the new transceivers with Touch-screen technology really reliable? wouldn't they be easier to give technical problems? Or is this a meaningless myth?
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio Год назад
Any transceiver can have technical issues. There is not one perfect transceiver made. The FTdx5000MP doesn’t have a TFT touchscreen. It has OLED displays. But OLED technology has a limited service life expectancy. I’ve seen ratings of 30,000 hours maximum. That is normal for such technology. Running at lower brightness levels could increase the lifespan of the OLED. Mine is still functioning fine, since August of 2019. The touchscreen displays I have used are TFT type. They might develop a bad pixel or two but, I haven’t noticed any with my FTdx10, which is well over 2 years old. That said, even a TFT display will someday reach the end of its service life. The ICOM IC-7610 TFT displays have been very problematic. There are widespread reports of premature failures. I read that ICOM switched to a new supplier for the TFT display and they are more reliable now. If you are looking for a perfect radio before you buy, you might want to consider a different hobby. You will not find a perfect radio. You could buy an old Drake, Collins, Swan, Hallicrafters, Heathkit, Johnson, etc., with light bulbs that backlight the meter and the Vernier tuning dial. But even with that, you will need to replace the light bulbs from time to time.

Hello Doug, I am finding DNR level 1 to give very watery/echoey audio. Not at all like the DNR from my FT891. Any thoughts on how to deal with that? 73, John 2E0SVB
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio 2 года назад
The echo sound is normal. Watery is not. I can’t get my FTdx10 to sound watery. With my FT-891, the watery sound is there until setting 9. The same is true of the FT-991 and FT-991A. The FTdx5000MP was the first radio I ever used that had no watery sounding digital artifacts at any setting. The slight echo seems to be a Yaesu technique to mask any residual noise. I’m so accustomed to it that I can’t operate either my FTdx5000MP or my FTdx10 without DNR enabled with a setting of at least 3. I show in many of my videos that the best technique is to attack the noise first with IPO, ATT, RF Gain, etc. That helps the DNR do a better job. The less noise that enters the DSP stage the better the DNR is at separating signal from noise. 73, de N4HNH

John, I should also mention that I did not update the firmware for my FTdx10. I’m using main version 01-04 and DSP version 01-01. Maybe the newer firmware has a watery effect. I didn’t update mine because I don’t like what Yaesu did to the band-stacking in the newer versions. When you watch the video I made about band-stacking, you will see that mine is different than newer models. 73, de N4HNH

It varies according to conditions, mode, and whether or not you are combining the Contour filter with DNR. I tweak the Contour filter in the menu parameters when I initially set a rig up. I sometimes use it in conjunction with DNR. I cover this in the video series. A sampling of them are here on RU-vid. There are 99 tutorial videos for the FTdx10 thus far. They are listed in order, at Patreon.com/N4HNH. There is a collection of content for each transceiver I have covered. S7 members have access to the FTdx10 video series. The DNR in the FTdx10 is superior to the FT-891. It is on par with the FTdx5000MP, and might even edge it out a slight bit. The 5000 introduces a slight reverb effect to mask any remnants of noise, which I don’t mind. But I’m not hearing that from the FTdx10. The FT-891 is prone to the watery artifact, unless you work the noise floor down with ATT, IPO, and RF Gain first. To be fair though, I have not installed the latest firmware update for the FT-891 yet. I’m waiting until I have time to shoot a video about it. 73, de N4HNH

It sounds like you aren’t reducing noise first in the front end of the receiver. And, if you hear an echo, that is the AGC hold. It’s always there, but you won’t hear it until the DNR removes all of the noise. That’s just how effective the DNR is in this transceiver. It should be similar. Yaesu uses a common theme across their product line. Many of the techniques I show on this channel can be applied to other transceivers from other manufacturers, but others tend to have lower quality DSP units, especially when it comes to DNR. And some don’t even have APF or Contour. Elecraft does, thankfully. Interestingly, the FTdx3000D uses the same DSP chip as the FTdx5000 and the FTdx1200. @n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio 3 года назад
Thankfully, it doesn’t allow a TX bandwidth beyond 3kHz; the agreed upon TX bandwidth limit for SSB. So someone can have a QSO at 7.150 while someone else has a QSO at 7.147. The QSO on 7.147 is not forced to move to 7.146. This is radio communications, not broadcast. We don’t need more than 2.4kHz of bandwidth to sound good. 2.4 to 2.6kHz of bandwidth provides a good balance between power spectral density and TX audio quality.
