God could do no wrong, even if it was morally reprehensible, and we couldn’t understand his motive. I had to read the Bible and listen to countless sermons throughout my childhood. But I wasn’t allowed to watch or read Harry Potter. The violence and sex and countless atrocities of the Bible were forced onto my impressionable young mind. But an innocent work of children’s fiction was off limits because it contained “magic”.

I feel that in most religions everything is a tool to carry out the wills of the gods. It was reading these stories in high school bible class that convinced me christianity was false. Not just because of the immorality, but because it was just so shoddily and fantastically told. Passover lamb is shared by the family who has traveled to Jerusalem for the event. Since priest can own nothing, and they work for God, we bring sacrifices that provide for the entire tribe of Levi. The sacrifice God asks of us is prayer. Prayer rises from the blood as the essence pf our being rises . These are a beautiful scent to God. And this is the offering he requires.

@exillens Your point is the question that must plague every serious student. I can think about it as a substitute for the sweet essence of prayer that I know rises from our blood. But this answer doesn't account for offerings like Noah's. It took me 7 years to set aside the questions raised by logic. I admire those who I once thought simple or not very bright. There were people in the denomination I first attended who served for 50 years without ever experiencing any evidence. My work was in logic. It took some pretty dire circumstances before I took the leap of faith. I suppose I'm one of the fortunate that experienced evidence. One of those evidences involved prayer.

It means "through the songs of praise." There have been many happy times when my own prayers came forth in song. But there are other reasons for prayer. I don't know if intercession can be called a sacrifice, but these are prayers that rise toward heaven. God hears. We offer them for others. Since Jesus offered his sinless blood, I don't think the question much matters anymore. ▪︎. A similar question might involve "the lamb slain from the foundation of the world." Or "this is by body" with reference to bread. There is some very interesting physics lessons in scripture. There is a language in light and a pattern of all things. A proton that draws the electon through 3 shells gaining light as it moves toward the proton. When you really get into the language and take the journey (the way of life) your eyes are opened to enough mystery that you trust for the few things you don't yet understand.
@@nadzach I mean if we ignore the countless verses where the biblical god gives instructions as to what types and how he likes animals slaughtered for his pleasure and how often, i suppose we can reduce and wordplay biblical sacrifice to some ad hoc connect the dots metaphysical meaning. But let's just say the biblical god especially in the Torah had those priests working overtime with the bloodshed collecting. You (like most others) have miss translated Elohim. It doesn't mean "God", it is a title for a group of leaders. The Hebrew were supposed to serve only Yahweh, not any other Elohim.

Another great one, Derek. The scene in 1 Sam 15 of punishing Saul for his slight mercy makes it pretty clear cut. And the "hyperbole" classification should def. be applied to both the accusations against enemies and the boasts about themselves. That is a great idea! I have had the same thoughts- Why would Jacob/Israel, who stole his brother's birth right, be chosen by "God" to lead a nation? So many things don't add up. I have found some other things to be glaringly problematic in the Bible as well.

There is the word haram in Arabic, which is the opposite of Halal, which seems to share this root HRM. Haram is everything that is forbidden in Islam. Pork is haram for instance. When I first heard about "the ban" in the OT, I thought it was a strange coincidence that the Hebrew word for it is so much like the Areabic word "harem". But it seems they could be connected if the women in a "harem" were "set aside" or "dedicated to" a certain man.

As a Christian fundamentalist for over thirty-five years, I went in hard trying to defend the god of the bible. I found the claims of Christianity to be impossible to believe. Now that I am Atheist, I love to listen to every one of my prior arguments being destroyed with science, logic, morality and truth.
Jesus is the best example for behaving the way a person should behave. Why do so many of us struggle with this maybe the sad truth is we choose to behave like demons and animals instead of playing the roles of a decent human beings. Jesus is the Lord God of heaven and earth, its so obvious when you believe. When you dont believe, you choose to willingly ignore the facts of the truth.
It is when you blindly believe you ignore the "facts of the truth." Be a seeker not a believer. Seekers go where the facts send them with an open mind and an open heart and are willing to learn new understandings as they grow. Believers believe what they are told to believe and don't question facts that don't fit in with their beliefs or they are no longer believers. Jesus "Yeshua" was a great teacher who taught us many great things as did other masters. He was not and is not the Lord God of Heaven and Earth and the early Christian followers of the first century didn't even see him that way. The Roman emperor and his council invented that to hide the truth of each persons own power to control the masses. Follow the facts, not your beliefs and you will see that is the truth.

How many of the Ten Commandments are negated by the New Testament? Idolization of the organization & book as “divinely inspired”, the murder to insure the sacrifice, the leaving of “fathers”/family disrespecting them, etc. Do any of them not get broken for Jesus to be god?
Yeah but what's more? How many of them are negated by the "Old Testament" itself? Let's just start with the first words: "I'm YHVH your God. Do not make an image or any likeness of that which is in the skies above or which is in the earth below or which is in the waters under the earth; do not bow down to them nor serve them." Moses proceeds to build an ark with literal Keruvim atop. This is for the sole purpose of the priest bowing and offering sacrifices in front of it. But it's okay because God said so even though there's completely contradicts his commandment. Secondly Moses builds a bronze serpent. So the people can look at it and be healed. Then to top it all off: Solomon Fills his temple with images of divine beings. But it's okay because that's the blueprint God gave to David. The reality is Judahite cult images were allowed, while Israelite cult images were banned.

How is it that these writings have knowledge of the exile if they're not post exilic? They're obviously written to influence people that lived in that time, after the exile; particularly when they're in need of an independent identity, so that they can survive as a people: I'm not faulting them for this, I'm not saying they were being evil, or liars, or wrong. Of course these traditions existed before they collated them into a text post-exile, but nonetheless we cannot ignore why these things were put together, how they were put together, and when they were put together. And there's nothing wrong with finding meaning in many of the lessons that touch upon the human experience, as they are written in the text. The problem comes when you divinize things that are clearly not divine in origin, but are demonstrably cultural and human; however if you divinize it in that it comes from human consciousness, or it comes from the human spirit and it is helpful... well that's completely different from saying this is the dictate of the gods or God, or the Heavenly Mandate etc...

The scripture according to King James was written by God's inspiration. What's not inspired by GOD? Read and be a living epistle. Don't read and do the same. The horns probably because El was apparently depicted as a Bull in Urgaritc mythology and that's pretty much the same El from the Bible. Horned gods were rather common in the ancient near east. Not sure about the blue skin coloring.
If the Bible is written in such a way as to be basically incomprehensible to a modern reader, then one would expect a God who wanted to be understood to have updated the language.

@tyronecox5976 I think all those terms just mean "anointed," and Titus uses Christou in his opening to his epistle (if that's what you're referring to). Of course being anointed doesn't mean you're magical, but the title also meant a king like Saul or David. I do see some Dionysus influence, but I think it's mostly on Paul, him combining the idea of the Jewish kiddush prayer for giving thanks to the god of the fruit of the vine with the Greek Orphic savior myths about the god of wine. In terms of Isaiah 63, I think that's a case of parallelism, where verses are developed in pairs, the first about Yahweh stomping Israel and the second about stomping grapes. I see where that might be influence from Dionysus myths, but I think it's a coincidence just based on the metaphor of crushing small things and red juice coming out. In terms of still doing sacrifices, I'm pretty sure that's never been common in Rabbinical Judaism because the temple sacrifices couldn't be made after the second temple was destroyed in 70 CE (or at least that's what I've heard).

If you look, for example, at one of the first Yahwist kings Hezekiah, he and his advisors throw what's probably the first real Passover celebration to welcome the refugees fleeing the Assyrian invasion. At least from the account in Chronicles it seems he was earnestly trying to unite the people behind a shared culture and mythology with the story of the Exodus and Moses and Yahweh. Later kings like Josiah were much more divisive and brutal about monotheism, and whatever good intentions were there at the start got tragically corrupted within the first century of Yahwist monotheism (in the 700s-600s bce). Even early Christianity was hoping to unite Jews and Gentiles. Some people def. didn't get that message about unity, though.

I genuinely don’t understand why this collection of ancient stories is considered to be divine or even true in some cases and almost contemporaneous stories are dismissed as fiction…. The Ilyad and other mythologies were constructed and narrated differently from the bible. The Gods don't speak and give commands in the other mythologies. The bible has passages with its god talking in first person and commanding subjugation to his authority and will. That alone can affect others psychologically. The biblical writers also incorporate and mixes up actual historical figures, events and places in it's timelines and narratives. Every nation develops a mythos about its origins to give the people faith, pride and loyalty about their identity and origins to stay united and obedient. The bible is Plato's The Republic view of social engineering in full effect. If other ancient nations had their mythos preserved we'd see similar styled stories and edicts a lot more

EMPATHY AND MORAL DILEMMA At one point I was born again and sang in church choir. Now I'm free. But now I think about the billions of people over the span of thousands of years. I've wondered, in accordance to so many different studies of these subjects, that so much of what is said in the New Testament about The Return, does NOT sound like what the one we refer to as Jesus or the Christ, but rather the Return of Yahweh, who is probably represented in other, and more ancient texts as Enlil, the Sumerian god of this world, generally. Although some things attributed to Yahweh sounds also like Marduck, Baal, and a few others. And the Sumerian god of creating, knowledge,wisdom, love, mercy, and much more, Enki is reduced to being an angel who appeared to help or stop something bad from happening, along with many other wonderful acts, but also as the serpent in the garden, who was actually correct. Clearly, we have to deem what is right or wrong, good or evil, and these other things, by a better judgement of standards, than what we see others expressing, usually with specific religions and ideology. I really hope people wake up and see real ethnics, morals, character, integrity,and such, with fairness, compassion, understanding, grace, love, peace, and the like actually are. There really is a Fair Medium, and balanced ground, that we should be able to stand on, without interference. I wouldn't be surprised if these who are contrary, self destructs, or turn on each other. I will say, studying the Bible is a great way to pass time when you’re in jail or prison. If you’re on the right level of SSRI’s, you might even start to see affirmations of faith unfolding before your eyes. Can’t help but think how arrogant it is to try to summarize the awesomeness of God in a series of books- and how comical it is to watch believers taking scripture literally and trying to figure out ways to skirt sky-daddy’s commands, like what the Jews do in New York with the wire around the city in order to violate the rules of the sabbath day. I think we would all have a much closer relationship with the higher power if these books and experts didn’t even exist. I feel that could be applied in a lot of other areas too, particularly psychology- we wouldn’t have half of the mental health problems that exist today if it wasn’t for bogus peer reviewed studies, tiktok shorts and social media life coaches

So this is all false. At 12:20 you claim "YAHWEH" but the text says "Yehovah elohim". The text speak about one of the elohim called Yehovah. Not a word about anybody's "god".

The OT has many similarities with greek poems, such as theogony and theological-wise. The theme of blood and killing is prevalent. The difference perhaps is biblical wrath is upon people who didn't believed in that deity. For Greek, wrath if gods was probably for multiple reasons. The deity of wrath sends it upon sinful people because chosen people were to inherent that land. Inheritance theme is pretty interesting in abrahamic traditions. I don't think Greek motifs for their poems were to make their political claim for a land but this is new in abrahamic faiths.
You don't consider that these passages subvert the rhetoric that all violence is just, as long as it comes from "legitimate" sources? It speaks directly to modern Israel's claim of being the world's most moral army while indiscriminately slaughtering their literal neighbours. That kind of partiality and favouritism is being condemned. If only God may avenge, no nation gets to play God.
