Fragment of a film featuring the smal jazzband from Yale with "You'll Do It Someday, So Why Not Now". Rudy Vallee is on alto and clarinet, before he became famous as a singer. The band also recorded this song for Edison and Columbia but this is the hottest version.

It's good to see some actual footage of a 1920s jazz band.

In case someone's missed it the top hat and clarinet part is a pure reference to the extremely popular bandleader Ted Lewis.

Rudy's doing it all: singing, saxaphone and hot clarinet solo. The sax and clarinet solos sounded like jazz from the late 40s early 50s.

he's totally crazy--he's really incredible musician. he probably slept with his sax under his pillow-- the musicality just flows out of him. he probably sang in his sleep.

He's a musical tour de force....multiple instrumentalist.....raconteur.....he's sort of like a East Coast preppy version...of a 'whatever genre you want' act....I love the STEP of this tune...it PUMPS UP!!!!

I've seen the entire short that this was excerpted from. The title is "Radio Rhythm." It begins with a woman turning on the radio and Valley and the Connecticut Yankees appearing on top of the radio. That background is the radio speaker. I've only seen it once, over 40 years ago, but I seem to remember in another number the Vallee is slightly off center in the shot, and the camera awkwardly jerks so that Vallee is back in the center of the frame. I wish the whole film was online.

True, and besides that awkward camera movement, it's really the only part of the film that I remembered for 40 years. It is a great look at early talkies, though. I love all of the musical shorts just as a look back at what people were listening to at the dawn of the Great Depression.

As the lead saxophonist and clarinetist of the Yale Collegians under the direction of Lester Laden, Vallee also sang in the trio Laden assembled for the recording of this song for the Edison company on a Diamond Disc recording. Vallee is not mentioned on the label but his unmistakable voice is heard clearly in the trio: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HKA89anqHFY.html
