Rockabilly Rebel by this band is a great song also. The Rockabilly sound was just another great genre from the late 70s/early 80s along with the Mod revival, Punk, Newave, Heavy Metal/Rock, Ska -Two Tone, Disco, Synth, and New Romantic. Best time for music in the UK, nothing modern comes close.

Love the Stray Cats. They brought back the style of early rockabilly like the greats used to do (Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran & Gene Vincent). This is happy music with a catchy beat that gets you moving. Lots of great songs such as "Stray Cat Strut", "(She's) Sexy + 17", "Look At That Cadillac", "I Won't Stand In Your Way", "Bring It Back Again" & "Rock This Town". I think Brian Setzer made a cameo appearance as Eddie Cochran in the film "La Bamba" (life story of Ritchie Valens).

He did the Louisiana Hayride where he was pretty much discovered right after his last performance there -- many famous singers were discovered at the Hayride in Shreveport LA.... These Cats were LIT to see live. It was the darndest thing too...they didn't compete with the tech, or the expensive instruments, massive light shows or other gimmicks that others were using at the time. They simply came out with a small drum kit, and upright bass, and an electric guitar and rocked your socks off. A couple of faves were "Sexy and 17" and "Rev It Up And Go."

The Stray Cats led the Rockabilly revival in the 1980's, that still is very popular today. Rockabilly is the original Rock and Roll, with people like Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, Elvis Presley and Wanda Jackson etc. Rockabilly is a cross between rock and roll and Hillbilly. Today there are heaps of band and sub genres such as psychobilly. You must check out the Reverend Hortan Heat, The Cramps, Imelda May, Tiger Army, The Hillbilly Moon Explosion, Horrorpops, Nekromantix and The Meteors, just to name a few.

This is the same sound that the Beatles started out with in Liverpool. They are harking back to that time period. The idea of a song based on the perspective of a male stray cat, juxtaposed to a young human male, is definitely intriguing. He "has cat class" and "has cat style."

You did Buddy Holly who was a granddaddy of rockabilly, basically hillbilly rock and roll. Try the Rev. Horton Heat doing the “The Devil’s Chasing Me” for some Texas rockabilly. The Stray Cats are a band playing 5o's Rockabilly in the the 198o's. They were an early favorite on MTV and brought tge energy from days hone by back. The song Amber will appreciate is the romantic heartbreak of YOU WON'T STAND IN YOUR WAY. The video presents an innocence of a time lost. The settings are perfect way to remember the lengths we went to love and stay connected to the one we love. Brian Setlzer also fuses the full orchestra to the sound with the remake of the Louis Prima swing number, JUMP, JIVE, AND WAIL. They didn't last long but made an impression while there were here. Excellent choice. I love when you play my requests, even when I know it isn't because I requested it. But I can pretend... "Sexy and Seventeen" was a banger, maybe not as appropriate today, but you'll like it.

I used to see them in the clubs here on Long Island before they hit it big. Local boys made good! Same with Twisted Sister.

I had a cockatiel named Rio who would start bobbing and dancing to only this song every single time it came on. It was comical and really wild. I thought it was odd that a bird would love a song about cats so much.

Brian Setzer belts you with his charisma, and Lee Rocker kills it on the the double bass.....If you like this vibe, you should definitely check out "Zoot Suit Riot" by Cherry Poppin Daddies!...but get ready to swing!

I think you guys would like Lonely Summer Nights. One of my favorite Stray Cats songs. Great saxophone on that one!!

Finally!!! Love this sound. Check out the Brian Setzer Orchestra (same lead) song Jump Jive an' Wail. Then try some Cherry Poppin' Daddies for the song Zoot Suit Riot...lots of history lessons to that song's meaning.

Something to tie the Stray Cats into your earlier "The Day the Music Died" theme: in the movie "La Bamba", Brian Setzer played Eddie Cochrane on the tour.

Brian Stetzer is so talented. Rock this Town is also a great upbeat song and I Won't Stand In Your Way Anymore is a great ballad.

Love the Stray Cats. Rockabilly from the New Wave 80’s era. Brian Setzer went on solo with an orchestra - freaking awesome.

“And now, for something completely different!” You two should listen to The Cult! They were *technically still are* an 80’s hard rock/alternative metal band that started out as more of a New Wave act in their early years. Fire Woman is a great song to start with!

“Sexy and 17” was another hit of theirs. This sound (rockabilly) was as new to most of us back in the day as it is to you now! Completely different from anything else on the charts. But just like Jay said, the sound grows on you! They were wildly successful and popular for a couple years there in the early 80s.

I saw them in concert in San Francisco in the 80s. Brian Setzer is a musical genius. They put on a first class show. Great memory. ❤️

The early 1980's saw a big Rockabilly revival with the Stray Cats and the B52's. We also had Psychobilly which mixed punk with old style rock with bands like The Cramps and The Meteors. Oh and the Stray Cats were weird enough for the drummer Slim Jim Phantom to get married to one of the most beautiful actresses ever Britt Ekland, so if that's what happens when you're weird I'll happily be weird 😆

Sha Na Na was around and their variety show was on the television of many a Gen X kid growing up in the late 70's.

The kids at school call me weird thinking it'll insult me, and I always tell them "I'm at one with my weirdness, own your weirdness". Of course, I was a punk and a big fan of rockabilly. Must be catching.

Can't decide who sets my heart to pitter-patter more. The "professional woman" working her trade in the alley, or the two wholesome girls- next- door with the mellow dance moves. Hooray for both ends of the continuum!

Finally! Love this song! Edit; they were definitely "weird" because their style - musical and sartorial - wee retro even then, rockabilly is a 50s vibe, but they are amazing.
@Serai3

The Stray Cats led the 50's revival in the 80's. Their style is usually called rockabilly. They're a great dance band - it's hard to keep still when they're doing their thing. (There was a 50's revival in the early 70's as well, led by the band Sha Na Na. That revival resulted in George Lucas's film "American Graffiti", which in turn led to the TV series "Happy Days", a massive hit for years.)

I was in high school from 1979 to 1983. When these guys originally first broke. Out of Massapequa Long Island New York. I grew up in Hicksville Long Island New York. Which just happened to be the hometown of Billy Joel. But these guys started to make a name for themselves only about 20 minutes or so from where I grew up as a kid in New York. They sort of piggybacked on the new wave sound of the early 80's.

I played this and "I Won't Stand In Your Way" for my grandparents years ago. They sarcastically played me "Paper Doll" by The Mills Bros.... So began my exploration of their records. There's a great live black and white cut on RU-vid! It may be an old Lawrence Welk Show appearance.🪗 Their delivery and sound are same style 20+years apart. Loving channel! 🪂

Brian Setzer is a GOAT for rock a billy guitar. His concerts are great and cover a lot of styles. He expanded to Brian Setzer Orchestra (with the original drummer and bass player from the trio in the big band) Worth every penny to see them live.

I think you guys will love the smoothness of "Be-Bop-A-Lula". You have to admit that Brian Setzer and his buddies are great musicians. Also try "Gene And Eddy"... try and get the live version. Then you'll surely be smilin' checking out "Rockabilly Rules"... a faster tempo tune that might get you up off your chairs.

THIS is Brian Setzer, he writes the songs, he sings the songs and he is a guitar virtuoso. He is your rockabilly go to guy. To really get a feel for how unbelievable he is on guitar, I urge you check out Brian Setzer- Mystery Train. Just Brian, his big ole Gretsch guitar and mind blowing talent. Cheers!
