What started out as a really good idea and what I thought would be easy quick job turned out to be a complete failure and I ended up ordering the special tool anyway. If you are watching this and you haven't already ordered your kit go ahead and save some time and order the one that includes the tool. Then check out part two linked here ( • Yamaha 115hp Trim Seal... ) to see the easy fool proof way to remove the end caps.

To give your homemade tool a chance put a piece of PVC over the ram and use the weight of the motor to push the tool flat up against the trim cap. You need to do this even with the legit tool with 4 pins. I tried and failed with a DIY tool myself. Had to break down and buy a good tool from MarineTech. Worked great. If I had to do it again I would just use an air hammer. Guys say this is a destructive method and you'll need a new cap, but I saw a video of a guy doing it and it doesn't seem like there was a lot of damage. Anyway, nice try! Thanks for posting.
