I don't understand why people is so obsessed with DAC, in particular in amplifiers. My amp came with a DAC inside: I have never used it simply because the DAC in my streamer is equivalent, if not better. And certainly the dacs that will be avaible in the years to come (for a fraction of the cost) will also be far better. What you really need in your amplifier is a solid, well designed and built analogue section, and this yamaha certainly got it!

Right! I tend to go for the 3200 in combination with an Atoll ST300 Signature Hi-Res source device😊

The point is that there are amplifiers on the market that can come up with an integrated DAC in this price range. Even if it will probably not be used, it is better to have it than to miss it. In addition, as a completely analog amplifier, the 1200 competes with other all-analog amps for around 2000 euros. Due to the deliberate lack of functionality (streaming, DA conversion), looks, build quality and sound remain the purchase criteria. And in this price and product segment, the Yamaha A-S1200 doesn't exactly look outstanding.

I'm not chasing scenes, air or understanding what kind of room Yamaha is giving us. But what is most important (for me) I noticed in this wonderful amplifier - it unrealistically conveys emotions, immerses you in music without any analysis - you just plunge into this musical action and do not want to leave it. Yamaha, BRAVO !!!

Your review is 100% right-on, I can say this because I own this Amp. It does not candy coat anything so what was recorded is what you get. WHere most amplifiers emphasize the power of the drums, this does in a more realistic sound and as indicated the clarity of the other instruments is superb. You do need some decent (pricey $$$) speakers to get a real Good sound (mainly Bass).

Due to emi noise cross-contamination, I am quite happy 😊, even giddy, that a DAC is not included. Also DAC circuits just keep improving, so I'd rather buy outboard units, replace them with time, whilst keeping the same amplifier for many years. But then, that's just my take on built-in circuits vs outboard. Thank you for your excellent reporting!

👍Excellent review. I was debating getting this but no more. I can't stand redundancy in my home entertainment. I was glad to hear there is no DAC. I prematurely purchased a high quality DAC before I started shopping for an integrated amplifier only to realize that all modern amps already have a DAC built in. I hated the thought of my $1,200 DAC going to waste. I know now I should not have started building my dream system a single component at a time and now I am paying the cost. The options to make everything work together is not easy with the limited selection nowadays. My old system was put together during the late 80s and early 90s back when my city had a stereo shop on every corner with a vast multitude of manufacturers. Now all we have is Bestbuy and Crutchfield. Today's selection of components is slim unless your willing to take out a second mortgage and go high end. All the affordable brands are almost identical to each other with function and design. It's only the high end stuff that offers what an 80s child would consider hifi. All I wanted was a VU meter, pre in/out and no built in DAC. Yamaha nailed it. I wont take out a loan to afford it but I am encouraged to start saving. Thank you for the informative review.

Man there's a lot of stuff on offer up on the cheap. When you know what you're looking at-- I've put together an entire Yamaha system which I house in 2 huge cabinets. On the SUPER cheap. I've gotten every component. Loads of them, with low hours, for a song. 2 turntables, 2 tape decks (the ones that circuit city didn't sell... Neither did crutchfield). One CD changer, and one changer that does DVDs and sacds. CD recorder... And daisy chaining receivers and integrated amps. I even bought 4 Yamaha towers off of there for 100 bucks all 4.

I had one of those. I've got a lot of different amps of theirs from the past, plus recently I've redone ALL my components to Yamaha. 2 turntables, 2 tape decks, 1 CD changer and one dvd/sacd changer. I went nuts. All my life I had a Technics this, a Sony that, a teac this... And after I had this Yamaha receiver that hasn't been off in over 20 years (except when the power goes out when I'm not home). I decided to do Yamaha everything.. Going to put a CD recorder on there, then I think I'm about done. I'm daisy chaining 2 big receivers... And then I can switch between the receivers and other integrated amps, and speaker pairs if I want. Everything's all in 2 cabinets.

I got one as soon as it was available in the UK last year. The Kef R7s I have match up beautifully they really do sound amazing together. I also have a Yamaha SACD player and their streamer but I don't listen to digital so much. I have a 1210GR with MP200 cart which sounds great with the built in stage however I'd really like to try a valve stage, Icon Audio maybe. The Main In works great as a power amp for my Onkyo AVR. It's really improved the experience of watching a film or even standard TV. Several months later I still haven't gotten used to it. This is a good thing, I'm still noticing that extra detail each time I sit in front of it all. With most of my previous setups the ears became accustom to the sound and it stops exciting the senses. Not here though I'm really happy, best money I've spent in a long time.

During a lockdown I decided to try a modern amplifier ,but which one. I have been a fan of mainly Japanese vintage Hifi for some time and have been very happy but we all seem to be chasing this audio perfection. So I purchased a Yamaha AS 2200 because modern reliability and retro looks. I listen mostly to vinyl and I actually find the sound in this mode to be very laid back and smooth and not bright at all even connected to Yamaha ns1000m speakers, however i have got to say if you are ever on a budget please don't totally ignore vintage gear especially re-capped stuff, I gotta say my vintage Sansui AU 9500 has far superior sound quality in all aspects. My favourite comparison song was Supertramp Lord Is It Mine. Great review, has anyone had similar experiences.

A few years ago I bought a preowned Yamaha AV-50 integrated amplifier (made in 1988) for a total of $74. Yamaha's own specs show 105 watts per channel @ 8 ohms. I was stunned at the powerful sound coming from this amp through my Pioneer BS-22 speakers. If you can find one for around $100 it's a great bargain.

I’ve owned the AS2200 for the past year. I purchased one at the same price as the as1200 so it was a no brainer for me. 1. The phono pre in the as2200 is good enough that every time I play a record I’m left feeling that I really don’t “need” an external phono pre. It’s great at my listening volume. 2. Unit was a bit sharp in the beginning. But that went away after a month or so. 3. Bass is a good via the phono pre and it gets great when you use an excellent /source/DAC. I used a Denafrips Ares 2 and I thought the bass was lacking and a bit one dimensional. With the Denafrips ares 2 bass was punchy but not deep. I think this combination is good. However about 2 months ago I got a Holo Audio Spring 3 KTE and after a few weeks of playing music my jaw dropped. I had no idea how important a source/ DAC is in a hifi system. I had no idea that the AS2200 does have deep beautiful bass you can hear the differences in drum kits from album to album. Dynamics are incredible and listening at low volume now is just incredible ay my listening seat. This thing is gem if you can find one at the price of an AS1200.

I'm running several Yamaha receivers and integrated amps. Daisy chaining. I find the way to do it is have every speaker. I've got 4 Yamaha towers that are loaded with mids and highs that act as the front and rear surrounds. Not speakers in tiny plastic cans. Those are 5 or 6 ", with 2", and 1" tweeters.. Then there's a pair of 3 way 12s on mains with mids and highs.. a pair of 3 way 15s on mains that have mids and highs. Then there's the Yamaha 3 way 8 inch speakers on top in the rear.. REALLY good 8s. And a 2 way pair of Yamaha 10" speakers ... When you cover all the possible frequencies like that... You can really tell more, than from just a single set, or even two sets, of tower speakers that are loaded only with 6 inch mids and highs and some ports.

I own an A-S1200. When new it sounded a little "sharp" or "forward" in the upper midrange/lower treble with certain songs. After about 60 hours of break in, it smoothed out, the forward nature of the sound went away and it sounds fantastic. I can crank The Pretenders and not have my ears bleed. Chrissy Hynde's edgy voice is my vocal smoothness test. Once fully broken in, you can crank the amp to full volume levels and it sounds smooth as a baby's ass, with a wonderfully detailed and wide sound stage. If you buy one these, just leave it on for a few weeks and Chrissy will calm right down... I do wish the amp had more power for this kind of money, I would like it to put out 160 watts like the Parasound Hint 6 does for a little more headroom driving hard hitting or capacitor draining low bass on my big power sucking floor standing speakers. Just gotta watch the volume level if if I turn up Bela Fleck's "Flight of The Cosmic Hippo" which has low notes that are on the verge of doing structural damage to my house anyway with what this amp can muster - LMAO! I went with the Yammie over the Parasound Hint 6 as I am a sucker for it's looks - it is a very nice looking piece of equipment. Quite pleased with the amp overall, and am sure it will serve well for many years. My last Yamaha integrated, a 1982 vintage A-700, lasted me over 30 years, and this one seems to be built even better.

Hi paul It does make you wonder why they felt the need to include the phono stage , it to me seems pretty obvious that someone spending this kind of money would be using an external unit to do justice to the amp . So you’re paying for something you will probably never use . And as for things like digital Add ons I’m with you 100% . Finally I’m always left wondering what you would prefer as an alternative , when spending a similar amount of money. Love these videos by your good self, because when reading hifi mags as I’m always doing , it can become an exercise in point scoring on behalf of the reviewers. You never seem to fall into that trap . Best wishes and thanks for all you do for the hobby

I just got this amp and I'm trying out different speakers with it and I have a Cambridge Audio DAC Magic 200M for my digital sources, but I also have a real to real and a turntable. With some of my tape decks I use the BASS and TREBILE controls and I'm constantly adjusting them from FLAT for new digital sources to adding TREBILE and or BASS for some tapes. When adjusting the tone controls, I hear the tone defeat relay turning off and on a lot like 6 times or so a day depending how many times I adjust them. Is this OK adjusting these like this or is it going to wear out the TONE DEFEAT RELAYS?

Everything wears out over time. So yes. Ultimately. That said, for the effective life of the unit in your system? I wouldn't worry about it. I am sure that the company has built each and every part to last for several years and then some. Including the tone controls.

@@ramblinginmeath4950 I can't help you so much with the Roksan Caspian, but the Roksan Kandy k3 I heard gave a big wide powerful sound (wider and more holographic than the Denon but not as sweet and warm which was why I went with the 1600ne) I have Denon PMA1600ne, Denon is warm and rich with a really sweet top end, it does have a couple of annoyances though, volume control is too sensitive with remote, the switch that turns off the digital circuitry makes the sound even warmer with a wider more involving sound stage but kills the solidity of the bass (so I leave it off) it has no av amp theatre pass through mode, has no sub out or main pre-outs so is pretty much just a basic amp at the end of the day. I find the DAC pretty good (better than reported especially after a month or so use) The amp sounded a little shut in and constipated when straight out of the box but after just 4 hours use opens up beautifully, It's also not the best at low volumes, needing a little extra tweak on the bass and treble (May be the Elac DBR62 Ref's I'm using with it) BUT, when you crank this thing up, WOW does it sound glorious, from mid vol to max vol sound gets really punchy and big but still with amazing clarity and air all the way up and no hint of brightness or edginess. If you like the way vintage gear sounds I think you'll love the Denon, it sounds vintage but with extra dose of sparkle and of course japanese reliability. Be interesting to see what Paul's view is on this question.

Yamaha must have completely revised their sound with this newest series of integrateds. Almost every review describes a sound that’s little like the outgoing models. The predecessors had a warm, slightly reserved midrange, a remarkable sense of space and bloom for solid-state, and unparalleled bass extension - a true marriage of some of the best SS and tube qualities. All these reviews lead me to question whether this new series is a regression.

Wish I had a answer to this question as well. The A-S1100 was described exactly that. Some claim up to 100 hours burn in and noticeable changes along the way. Currently I can get better pricing on a 1200 vs a new 1100.

I bought the A-S 1100 on closeout in the middle of 2020 after the A-S 1200 was announced, also bought the Yamaha CDS-1000 CD/SACD player and the WXC-50 pre-amp for streaming. I didn't see anything in the specs that made me want to buy the A-S 1200 instead of the 1100 and the Yamaha dealer agreed. I have played the amp and CD player 4-6 hours a day on average for the last 8-9 months and am delighted with them. My other system has a Cary SL-94 tube pre-amp and a Nakamachi PA-7 power amp, and I think the sound quality of the Yamaha A-S 1100 is very comparable, though not as powerful. The Nakamachi is a 200 watts per channel amp. I find the A-S 1100 to have a pretty neutral sound with a bit of tube type warmth. If they've changed the sound profile I'm glad I didn't go for the 1200.

Yamaha makes the best audio components. I have settled with an Onkyo for my stereo integrated networked amp, because the Yammy cost a bit more, but I love the Yamaha look and sound. By the way, that headphone plug is known as a 1/4" plug in so-called English units. What value did you give it in SI units? I love my DAC radio. I listen to radio choices from around the world, instead of the 3 dozen local stations all owned by the same two or three corporate owners, that play the same 40 songs off common playlists. I'd really appreciate some direction. I presently use an old pioneer vsx910 av receiver with a new pair of klipsch rp8000f speakers and I need to be able to soften the bass of the klipschs being a tad bass heavy. I've already turned everything I can either off or down regarding bass settings but they may still be 'p**sing off the neighbors'. I'm considering purchasing the Yamaha AS-1200 as an upgrade (max budget) but I'm unsure if the bass dial will allow the bass to be turned down more than Ive already tried with the pioneer receiver in the same way a DJ mixer bass dial almost cuts off the bass completely? Ultimately all I need is less bass, a separate I can plug my laptop audio jack into (or some form of better cabling set-up) to stream the sound from YT videos through amplification (possibly through the TV - amp via digital optic cable via DAC & some kind of streamer to play Spotify through as the current setup using my phone + 3.5mm headphonejack has me up and down to change the song, leading me to buy longer jack cables so the phone sits nearer me 🤦‍♂️ . Ps I've confused myself with all the options available and seek professional help 😂🙏 thank you in advance for any recommendations.

Others are more elaborate. If depends on the company and their products. The performance can be pretty good. Even so, if you want a top level performance then an external head amp will be the preferred option: better quality parts, better standard of isolation, lower noise floor. Don't use a switch box.
