I have watched this series a number of times....You are excellent in the quality of these videos......I bought a 2019 gas cart recently and will be doing almost everything you offer in this series....ty ty ty
Thank you for the info... That's exactly what I needed to know.... It's the wife's toy and I've upgraded it to complete happiness except the complaint about the speed. Lol and explaining what and how a governor works to a non-mechanical wife...... Let's just say that any husband that is happy knows that it's easier to just listen to what the wife wants and give results, than to explain what you did. Lol thanks again for the info.
Awesome! That's one of the best things about these Quietechs - it's cheap and easy to make them go fast! We are currently playing with a fuel controller on our shop cart and have it running 35 mph on 20" tires.
@@tylerwillacker459 We will do several videos about it when we are ready to release our High Performance Package for the Quietechs later this year. Subscribe to our newsletter so you get the notifications when that comes out - powerequipmentman.com/
Your answering all my questions, I love your channel, thank you for sharing your knowledge. Look forward to more. This is the model I like. I got to drive one at Golf, it was the best. I like that Yamaha makes everything, thats a great achievement, supply & demand, clever. Impressive. Thanks P EQ M. I wish you lived near me. Keep up the great work. 🇦🇺
Throttle cable adjustment is easily done from the rear with the access panel removed, absolutely no need to remove the entire center body section... TBI linkage WOT (Wide Open Throttle) can be determined at the same point with very little effort, as well.
I have a 2018 EFI quiet tech and was able to reach and adjust the governor nut from above the gas tank with no big issues. I used a 1/4 ratchet with a locking button on it because the socket will fall off of most other ratchets. Position the handle above the throttle cable and you can work the nut about 1/4 turn with each ratchet. I am a pretty big guy and my hands are not small but I could do it with no big issues. Your wife or kid could do it even easier.
Yeah when I did this the first time, before the recall on the throttle cable and the dealer replaced and reset, I was able to get to it no problem from the front.
2018 Drive 2 adjustment results: 11mph on delivery, 16mph for the governor adjustment, 19mph with the throttle cable adjustment for those wondering. Bone stock.
@@PowerEquipmentMan Have you ever seen any issues where the cart will crank and struggle to start after doing this? This seemed to start being an issue about a month after the mod. Swapped the battery since it was the original and it still exists. Ex: Press the pedal, cranks, cranks, cranks, small backfire pop and then starts. Sometimes it wont do anything or it'll be a sold 10-15 second delay before it starts. May just be coincidental but curious if it could be with something with these adjustements.
@@nicks6913 Hard starting is a common issue with these carts, but it has nothing to do with the governor. From what we have been able to figure out, it seems to have something to do with the fuel pump/vapor lock. We have not been able to find a cure for it, but it seems the best thing to do is press the pedal about 1/4 of way down and hold for a couple seconds, then release, wait a couple seconds and try again.
I have just purchased my drive 2 EFI and thought about doing what you suggested once i run a couple of gallons through her. ( break in ) I have added 205/65-10 radials as a partial way to help increase the speed. Looking to make this into a LSV come spring and am looking forward to watching more of your videos. Thanks Frank
Hello, thanks for all the Drive 2 videos! I owned a G1 for years and finally have decided to get a new cart. I purchased a 23’ Adventurer 2+2. I learned from your videos that the Drive 2 PTV has the higher speed gears, and does 19 mph stock. They are advertising the Adventurer does 14.9 mph stock- can the Adventurer be turned up (governor and throttle cable) to run 20s or does it have a different ECU tune that limits it to the slower speed? I’m planning to title this as an LSV in Florida, it must do 20 mph minimum to qualify. Thank you!
@@PowerEquipmentMan thanks for reply man, great content and the only source for these tech videos on RU-vid! I saw some references in some of your other videos to a fuel tuner or “Perfomance kit” are you still planning to release that for the EFI Yamahas?
Frank from a week ago. Any chance if it is even possible to have the cart stay idling when you stop. Thought that might be another video for discussion? Your do a awesome job. Frank
I have kits for other models of carts that will make them stay running. It was just a relay kit that plugged into the harness and a clutch kit. You had to do the clutch kit to increase the stall RPM so the cart wasn't trying to move while it was idling.
If I get in a Drive 1 sometime I will do some videos on it. But the governor adjustment on the Drive 1 is exactly the same as this Drive 2, you just have a smaller access panel to get to it.
Someone on another video said this and I'm wondering if this is true and a concern? I don't know much about golf carts or their governors. "Over adjusting that setting will cause the governor to come apart inside the transmission. Use some caution when you do this. ( I've been a golf cart technician since 2005) If the governor comes apart it will make it's way to the ring gear and break the transmission case."
I have heard that too. I have been building carts as long as you have. I have turned the governor up on every one of them. Never seen a governor fail on any cart I have built or any cart I have ever worked on. I am usually more concerned with engine RPMs than governor/transaxle issues.
Great videos...I've been looking into Yamaha Drive 2 and Rover Golf carts (gas). Can you please tell me top speed if the Governor is adjusted as you mention in the video? Ideally, I'd like to be above 30mph. I'm in a residential area outside Brunswick, GA in Golf Course community and speed limit is 30. Btw...great videos on all aspects of the unit. Thanks!!
With 20" tires and the governor turned up - a fleet model cart will do around 20 mph and a PTV model (high speed gears) will do around 25 mph. You can get a PTV cart to do 30+ mph with the proper modifications. We will have more info on that when we release our High Performance Kit around the end of this year. Thanks for watching!
GREAT Video (as Usual)! Does governor adjustment help in Any way to solve my 2017 Drive 2 (carb) backfiring immediately after a long downhill descent or slow off road maneuver ?? Thanks for any advice you have re fixing backfiring Drive 2s! .... And PLEASE continue ur GREAT videos on Yamaha carts !!
Backfires are usually caused by the carb not fully closing all the way when the pedal is released. This could be from the throttle cable being adjusted too tight or the carb being dirty/gummed up. Try checking your cable adjustment first.
Does a 2017 carb Drive 2 have a spark arrester that might also cause backfiring? Can that simply be removed ... or be cleaned or replaced? THANKS AGAIN ...
@@ddchomes I have never heard of the spark arrester causing a backfire issue. They do have one on the tip of the exhaust that can be removed, but it is a bit of a pain to get to.
Great videos! Will adjusting the governor change acceleration at all, if not is there a way to increase acceleration? Had my cart (2020 Drive 2 EFI) in for annual service recently and it seems to really slow down going up small hills now, didn't notice it as much prior to the service. Tks!
I bought a used fleet cart, i adjusted governor and got it to 18 mph, but the acceleration going up hills is very weak. My dads quietech is way faster uphill. Will adjustung throttle cable help with accelleration? Thanks
To help increase hill climbing power, I recommend installing a Clutch Performance Kit. Here is the video with more info on that - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kgtt-aZb7_w.html Clutch performance kit - powerequipmentman.com/collections/best-sellers/products/yamaha-drive-g29-drive2-clutch-performance-kit You do also need to make sure your throttle cable and governor are adjusted how we show to, and I would also remove your spark arrestor (if you have a quietech model).
Thanks for helping me last time, I replaced my plug and all is good so far, I did this mod based on some research a few years ago and that information said to adjust it only a bit to get more speed and I got to about 24MPH, then a recall came out on the throttle cable and the dealer reset it after replacement and I'm back to about 20MPH. I read that if you "ungoverned" these too much there can be a heat issue as they are air cooled. I am very curious what your thoughts are on that? You seem to be removing all of the governing based on your video?
Different subject for Yamaha gas golf cart. I'm switching a BreezEasy fan from a 2008 to a 2013 gas Yamaha, but read a converter is needed even though both carts are 12 volts or I risk damaging the fan, Is that correct? If so, can you describe the converter to help find it in the 2008 cart? Many thanks!
Sorry, I don't have much info on this as I have never installed any of those fans. However, I can tell you that there is no difference in the electrical system between a 2008 and a 2013 G29. I would recommend contacting the fan manufacturer and confirming with them.
Any idea what would cause the cart to not accelerate as quickly as normal. Ours started not getting the full Boost when we first take off. And it’s having trouble pulling hills. It will do it just slow and no zip
Who makes the best, fastest, reliable gas golf cart out of Club Car and Yamaha? Yamaha has a better independent suspension but Club Car has an aluminum frame
It seems like club car has been struggling to make a good cart since they discontinued the DS. I live in Kansas, so an aluminum frame means nothing to me (we don't have rust problems here). I used to be a big club car DS guy years ago, but for gas carts Yamaha Drive/Drive 2 out sell Club Car any day. All manufacturers are making gas carts now that go 19 mph from the factory and they can all be sped up another couple mph past that with just adjusting the governor. I think Yamaha probably has the most reliable cart right now as they are using the same proven engine they have had for over 20 years.
I have. 2021 gas drive 2 cart… when the motor is warm and sets for a while it runs like it’s flooded and hardly moves for about 10 seconds and the dealer can’t fiqure it out. Ever have or heard of the problem? Thanks brother
My grandmother just picked up a 2015 Yamaha gas golf cart and the problem she has noticed is that every once in a while on a cold start, she gives it gas and it will not go forward or reverse but just makes a loud noise. It might inch forward or reverses as it does this but barley moves. She switches it between forward and reverse a few times, and turns the cart on and off and then the problem goes away. It only happens every once in a while. Any thoughts on what I should check?
Sorry but that is a tough on to diagnose without seeing it. You could make sure the starter belt is tight so the starter isn't slipping. It's the smaller of the two belts and it should be pretty tight. If thats not it, I don't know what else to tell you.
What is that purple hose on the driver side? In that video. Mine is black. Just below the governor and it is not attached to anything, I have lost all acceleration and speed.
That is the vent tube. It should not have anything to do with your issue. I would recommend removing the spark arrestor from the tip of your muffler. They are known to plug up over time and cause power loss.
Installing a clutch performance kit will help out with the hills and heavy loads - powerequipmentman.com/collections/golf-cart-accessories/products/yamaha-drive-g29-drive2-clutch-performance-kit
Frank with the non quieteck. This might sound crazy but after the dealer bought the high speed gears from you and installed them my governor adjustment is now on the opposite side and the lever that should have about 1 inch of threads showing after full adjustment appears to be upside down from it's original position from the factory? The plus is my cart is stupid fast. Street flashing radar detection has me doing 32mph on 2 of them and 31 on another? Thanks Frank
Is there a way to evaluate the possible need to adjust the throttle cable without removing the body. I can press the gas pedal down with a long stick (from behind the cart)but don’t see the movement of the throttle arm as viewed in your video. I’m reluctant to remove the body. Thanks
Using a flashlight, you should be able to see the arm moving on the thottlebody/carb without removing the body. You just need to make sure it is fully closing and fully opening. Just look directly below the air box, towards the front corner.
You can jack up the back end and try to get to it from underneath. If its a quietech you will have to pull the skid plate. But most of those rear seats aren't that are to remove as a complete assembly by just pulling the mounting bolts.
Can I adjust the governor too much? I just bought a brand new drive2 and I don't want to damage it. The dealer set it to run 17.5 mph. Feels slow. Thanks
If it's brand new you need to let the engine break in for awhile until you try to turn it up anymore. Do your first oil change after about 5 hours of run time. Then you can turn it up to where I show you to in this video, no farther. If you want more speed then that you can either do taller tires or different gears in the rear end.
I just watched your video. Since you have the PTV, you already have the taller tires and high speed gears. That cart should be able to do 20 MPH or more. Just wait till after it's broke in to turn it up. Nice cart!
You can try removing the rear skid plate and getting to it from underneath. But usually those rear seats only have 4 or 6 bolts that connect them to the cart, so it's not that difficult to just unbolt them and remove the whole seat assembly.
Got a new 2021 drive 2 quietech EFI. Governor was set about 1/4 and it would run 16-17mph. Watched your video and adjusted the governor to 3/4 and runs 20-21. Should I be concerned about my warranty?
Making any modification to your machine can affect your warranty if something get damaged because of that modification. I don't recommend turning the governor up on a brand new machine until the engine is broke in (at least 5 hours of run time). After that just use your head and don't hold it wide open for long periods of time (1/2 mile or more) and you should be fine.
Adjusted governor and checked throttle cable was going 14 mph now going 16 mph, what else can I do to make it go faster? It goes a lot faster from the start now but then will slow up substantially after. I have a 2017 Yamaha
@@PowerEquipmentMan how do I check on the solid axle? Not really sure on that, and I’m in the process of getting bigger wheels and tires but just stock as of now
@@jhadynwalker Independent rear suspension is the Quietech model, like what is used in this video. If you have the solid axle model with stock tires, 16 mph sounds about normal. If you have independent rear suspension, you should be getting around 18 mph.
Well done! You have a gift. I have a street legal 2014 Yamaha DRIVE-R Gas Golf Cart that I've adjusted. Problem, I think, is that the starter motor engages late. The pedal has to be pressed 2 or 3 inches before it starts. Gas motor starts right after that. It was like this before adjustment and the actual reason for adjustment was the carb not opening fully when pedal was to the floor. Any ideas why the starter motor starts late?
I would guess that the sensor that is mounted on the side of your throttle pedal is bad. You could test it with an ohm meter if you have one. It should change from open to closed as soon as the pedal starts to move. My other guess would be you might need new brushes in your starter/generator. They have to be removed and inspected to see if they are worn down to the indicator line yet. But start with the sensor first. Thanks for watching
@@PowerEquipmentMan boy was I off base. The electric motor sensor was fine. It turns on right when pedal is pushed as it should. The problem is that the butterfly does not open on the carb until the pedal is pushed down 2 to 3 inches. When the pedal is pushed to the floor it opens the butterfly fully so I can't just back it off or it won't go full throttle. Unlike a lawn mower cable that you can adjust the actual length of the cable, both ends are "fixed" so I don't know how to get more travel out of it. Can I in fact get more travel by adjusting the 2 ends of the cable or do I need to make the adjustment at the govenor? Any help is greatly appreciated.
@@johniesymons1670 This video shows how to adjust your throttle cable at the pedal and you can also make more adjustments where the cables connect to the governor. You should be able to make it do exact what I say in the video. If not, then you have problems. Possibly a cable needs replaced?
my 2017 Yamaha Gas cart has started losing drive power. at first it would sometimes not have enough power to take six people up a hill. Now it struggles with just two. Is this a belt issue or maybe fuel filter? I looked at the drive belt and it seems really loose but maybe that is normal?

We plan on making a video on how to do that soon.
I have adjusted hundreds of carb and efi Yamahas just like this over the last 15 years and have never had any issues. However I don't recommend holding the throttle wide open for extended periods of time (1/2 mile or more) after adjusting your governor like this. Just use your head and you will be fine. I will have some more videos coming out about speeding up these carts even more and pushing the limits of this engine so keep an eye out for those!
**Sorry I should have included this in the video** I don't recommend holding the throttle wide open for extended periods of time (1/2 mile or more) after adjusting your governor like this. Be sure to check out our website - www.powerequipmentman.com
I’m curious also. About to adjust mine. But I’m in a golf cart community and go up to an hour full throttle. I only want to adjust to get about 3 mph more (23-25 tops).
@@jimrogers1500 running at a higher RPM is going to cause a little more wear on your engine (shorten engine life). So for example, these engines are rated at a 20 year lifespan from Yamaha, so by turning the governor up and running at wide open throttle for an hour straight, your engine life may go from 20 years down to 15 years. A lot of it depends on how well the cart is maintained and how many hours per year you are putting on your cart. There really isn't any exact science to it. Luckily, these engines are fairly inexpensive to rebuild, so it's not that big of a deal. Most people won't own their cart for long enough to ever have to worry about rebuilding the engine.
@@PowerEquipmentMan Thanks. I was able to get a 2 more mph out of it without removing the back by going under the seat. Tight fit and I could get more if I was more patient. But in the Villages we are only supposed to go 20 MPH. I just wanted a little more to pass the slow pokes. :D
So I have a Yamaha G29 and I adjusted the governor to get a little more speed while I found I didn’t like how much the cart jerked around at low speed so I adjusted it back to what it was. But now it won’t go back to normal like the governor is stuck. Any help would be appreciated thanks !
I would guess that you have an issue with your throttle cable being too tight. You should be able to turn your governor up and not have any jerkiness at low speed. If you watch the butterfly opening on the top of the carb/throttle body, with the key off, you should hear the click of the microswitch before the butterfly starts to move. If your carb starts to open too early (before the engine starts to crank) it will make it take off too fast. You also need to make sure that the butterfly is closing all the way when you are not pressing the throttle. It could be dirty and not allowing it to close all the way. If thats the issue it would require doing a carb clean.
I don't recommend holding the throttle wide open for extended periods of time (1/2 mile or more) after adjusting your governor like this. Also you should make sure that the air intake screen on the flywheel side of your engine isn't packed full of grass and leaves. That is where the air is drawn in to cool your engine.
@@PowerEquipmentMan thanks man. gonna check that out. we go off road a lot so probably some stuff in there. i just serviced it based on one of your other videos though and didnt see anything.
But that only works on the older carberated engines, not the new Electronic Fuel Injected engines, they are totally computer controlled and you need a laptop and software. But even so you only get maybe 22-23 mph!
@@PowerEquipmentMan that’s what I was told when looking at a new Quiet Drive 2, back in the spring of 2018, as I waited for our new retirement home to be built. We were camping for 4 mo., so I had a long time to go from dealer to dealer, looking and test driving. I was going to order one, till I found out 19-22 mph was the most you could get out of a new one. I even looked under the body to see for myself and there was no mechanical governor to be found. I will admit that the Yamaha Quiet Drive 2, is the best riding an handling carts out there. Until I found the cart I bought. A 218 Tomberlin SS Coupe, 48v AC cart. That’s loaded with features that make it a real LSV, that no others have. Like power steering for one! Real DOT safety glass tinted windshield and wiper, hydraulic 4 wheel brakes with drill/slotted rotors, automatic electric parking brake. Speedometer/Odometer, 8, 6 volt Trojan Deep Cycle led acid batteries, full length color matched roof, independent coil over front suspension and adjustable coil over rear suspension, 265/5-12 radial tires, two locking glove boxes an trunk, all LED lights with self cancel turn signals, hi/low headlights, parking an stop with third stop up on the roof. Automotive type shoulder belts, plus locking keyed on off acc switch, with forward/reverse hi/low speed controls up near the steering wheel. The new ones have even more, like a control center on an 8” touch screen! With backup camera. The best part is the performance! I’ve gone 40 miles in one day on one charge, with a built in charger. Also with the motor rated at 17 hp, with a 14:1 drive ratio I can cruise at 25 mph, just feathering the go pedal, u to 27 if held down on a fresh charge! My wife has a 2019 EzGo, TXT 72 volt cart, that almost does wheelies on takeoff it’s so quick, but looses it at 15 mph and slowly gets to 24-25, mine is kind of soft in comparison off the line, but once rolling? Really get going! That’s one of the advantages of AC electric motors! The cart might ride a little harder than the Yamaha, but handles like a Go Cart! Love it! I plan on buying a new one possibly next year, when Tomberlin comes out with Lithium tech batteries!
@@kevinvoyer5053 I OWN a brand new fuel injected cart, exactly like he shows in this video. You change the governor EXACTLY like the video shows. #Fail #Youknownothing
You absolutely don't need to be removing the back panel to get access. You can simply get underneath the back of the cart and tighten with a ratchet wrench
If you are not familiar with the Quietech models, they have a FULL SKID PLATE that would have to be removed to get to the governor from underneath. Removing the skid plate is much more difficult then removing the rear access panel, and by removing the access panel you can actually SEE what you are doing.
