This is a review of the Yamaha P-515 Digital Piano focusing on the Natural Wood X (NWX) key bed action, the piano and electric piano sounds, and its use as an 88-note MIDI Controller. I also use and talk about the Yamaha Smart Pianist App in this video, and talk about the speakers, the unique built-in audio interface, some things I feel were left out, and more.
One thing I did not talk about is the price: usually about $1,499 street price and you can find it from my friends at Sweetwater (get free Candy!) at sweetwater.sjv.io/jr57ee

Considering selling this beloved Yamaha P-515 to try some other 88-note controllers. Thinking about the Arturia Keylab 88, the Native Instruments S88mk2, or others. Any suggestions? What 88-note controller would you like to see reviewed?

Hi, Please try the following linear velocity curve with your P515 before getting rid of it. I use this curve with Pianoteq and it works really well. Velocity = [0, 18, 107; 1, 2, 127] Use with P515 Default (Medium) Touch) I used to be a piano tuner so I have some idea of how a piano should feel i.e. the psychoacoustic response. Let me know if I can help any further. Warmest regards, Chris

Hi, Pianoteq has re voiced their best pianos with an update (7.5.0). I use the New York Steinway with the following velocity curve with my P515 0/1, 5/2, 107,127 (in Pianoteq) I use this with P515 medium (default) touch setting Give it a try before ditching your P515. I humbly recommend you think twice on changing your keyboard. I was considering part exchanging my P515 for a Roland A88 MK2 but now I'm so glad I didn't go ahead. Warmest regards, Chris

Hi, Im a Yamaha Grand 6'1" player who has been looking for a while for an affordable Heavy Action digital. I purchased this piano after seeing reviews and can tell you its a great alternative. The sound is very good and the action is excellent. If your looking for a light action then this won't be the one for you a P90 would work well. Great review it was spot on - thanks

1:45 ----- it certainly does ---- feel solid as a rock. I have the same view --- it really is a pleasure to play those keys. Also - an traditional piano certainly does have key noises too. It's just that we can't 'turn off' the traditional piano sound/audio in order to hear it, which is equivalent to just having the digital piano audio turned right up ..... won't be able to hear the key noises too.

Great voice recording - very professional. Also liked your choice of music for the sound demos - so much nicer than the elevator music offered by many reviewers. I wish I could get my hands on this piano - I returned the ES920x for its terrible speaker sound. FP90X went the same way. I've heard nothing but good about these speakers. . . I would also use it as a controller for soft pianos so we're thinking the same here.

Thank you! I meant to put my studio set up in the description. I’ll do that today. I really debated between this and the FP90 (the X was not available yet I don’t think.) I think either are a good choice as Roland stuff is great. But if you are a pianist, and feel is the most important, followed by speaker sound, the P-515 is your answer.

I was on about 4 different waiting lists to get this keyboard .... I landed 2 ... Gave one to a dear relative , while keeping one for me ... I DO NOT REGRET WAITING ... This is one of the MOST AMAZING FANTASTIC Piano-istic Feeling Electronic Keyboard I ever had or even played this far 🙏🏽 ... and for the price .. (about $1500-$1600 ) For what I got it for mainly (PIANO ... and sone Rhodes ) it Fully Fulfills my expectation The P515 is not a major midi controller .. like to trigger synths and other sounds .. though it can trigger ... But Ti use to trigger Piano & Rhodes this one is great .. (But you can midi a decent soft touch midi keyboard to the midi input of the P515 and add in those other MIDI Controller accesses that way .) But for an acoustic piank feel and response .. in an electronic situation ... the P515 has that FEEL of playing an acoustic grand piano .. in such a compact size keyboard (The best thing of course would have to be a Yamaha Grand Touch ... and/or Silent Piano with actual grand piano action and hammers ... everything minus the strings ... etc... But it would not be Portable .... like the P series ... PORTABLE ) The P515 , to me , is the closes to a ‘Grand Touch’ in a PORTABLE Keyboard ... 🙏🏽🎹

Agreed. I am thinking of selling mine for now to test out some other 88-Note keyboards for the channel (namely the NI S88 and the Arturia 88.) But I know I will never find touch like this, but MIDI control of piano and EP (and having DAW control from the keyboard) is important.

I agree. In my opinion the P515 action is the most realistic. I found the noisy action and the annoying bounce of the Kawai ES920 action to be unacceptable. I found the Roland FP90x to be unnatural because the key action to be too light and does not emulate a real acoustic piano. In the end, by the process of elimination, the P515 was the right choice for me. Thanks for validating my thoughts on the P515.

I think this keyboard/setup is worth considering whether or not you are using it to make a living or just fooling around. Playing for the fun. The quality of MIDI sounds is impressive. They dont sound cheap and toy=like at all. Ive heard Bosendorfer grands and the sim herre was pretty close. (nO I've never played one heh). And the Yamaha CFX. These digital piano setups are gret for home use. Lo longer are we forced to bother family practicing. Playing at the wrong times. Bothering neighbours. Being able to put on a good pair of headphones and play as loud as we want any time.

Great review Eric! Recently just purchased this after renting one a few times. I, personally, love the keyed and the rig in general. I only have one complaint and wanted to know if you had the same issue. When using the audio interface feature (so that I could play my MainStage setup through the speakers for ease of practicing), I noticed some serious buzz/borderline distortion when having the volume up on the speakers at 40% or beyond. I checked with headphones to make sure it wasn't my computer settings. Did you encounter this when using it as well? Quite apparent on the Keyscape patches. Thanks for any insight!

Recently I tried about 10 keyboards (in a store) of this type and roughly this price range including the p125, p515, Roland fp10 / 30 etc. I found all of them have "bouncy keys", meaning they recoil off the bottom of the key bed upon reaching the end of their downward excursion. This makes them all feel very unrealistic when compared to acoustic pianos, yet no reviewer I've seen mentions this. To me the wood composition of the keys matters little when compared to their dynamic properties (in motion). Wondered what your thoughts are ...

It’s a P-125 with better action, more sounds, and better speakers. Not sure about the black keys. They have a wood grain finish on them and have a texture on the top (not sure why.) The P-125 isn’t bad at all if you are on a budget.

@@Cre8ivKeyboards Thank you for your reply. I'm not on a budget, for me it's about where that extra $1000 goes. I find that no built in speakers do the sound justice, so it's either headphones or external speakers anyway. A Steinway has a very lively and fairly light action - lighter than the p515. What's better is all preference, I guess. The black keys ARE plastic - the texture is overdone, I think, to give the impression it's wood 😉

I have a question regarding this piano: I have the a P-125 as low-cost spare piano, but one thing I don't like is when using a layer (like the strings), the layered sound does not sustain with the pedal. Once you lift off the keys, regardless of if you have the pedal depressed, they just fade out. This is the first digital piano I've played in which the layered sounded doesn't sustain. Does this piano do the same? Or does it sustain layers with the pedal?

Good question. I haven’t really looked at the CLP keyboards, as I usually am looking at more Pro use keyboards, But many of the Clavinovas use the same action (or something like it) as the P515. The CLPs are generally more bound as a home keyboard in a piano chassis design, where the P515 is more versatile as a stage keyboard by its design. SO just depends on your needs. Love the P515 for learning piano. I practiced on a P105 for 7 years and the action felt imprecise and unrealistic compared to a real Yamaha piano. The P105 sound was not great, always needed to use the P105 solely as a midi keyboard to Cubase Grand3 or equivalent for a realistic piano sound. In stark contrast, love the P515 built in Yamaha and Bosendorfer sounds. And the P515 action feels so much more like a Yamaha grand. It is a joy to play. I get twice as much daily practice time on the P515 without feeling burned out, compared to the P105.

I'm a devoted Yamaha P-series player. I like my P-105 for many reasons but the keys are a bit noisy these days. Maybe it's getting worse?? I hear plastic on plastic and it's annoying. If the 515 was quieter, I would think about switching for that reason alone but I've always wondered if the wood (that you can see from the side when a key is pressed down) is really quieter or is is just a gimmick..... like, oh look... there's wood under the plastic "shell." That alone, would not make a lot of difference. So, my question is, in your opinion, are the keys REALLY more like an acoustic piano or is the wood (that can be seen) just a sales gimmick?

Great job! Thanks for sharing. I do have a couple questions if you don't mind. I apologize in advance if this gets too long. First of all, have you played the CP 88 or the YC 88? If so, how would you compare the action to the P 515? Also, on the P 515 I see that the XG section has a sample of an E. Grand Piano. Although I would bet it's not perfect, how does it really sound? Both the YC/CP have a electric grand that's not too bad. While I still have time, I'm trying to decide whether to keep the Y C 88 or send it back and get the P 515. Thanks in advance for any insight!

@Cre8ivKeyboards 2 года назад
I found both the YC88 and the CP88 recently at a Guitar Center. The action is exactly the same as the P-515. it’s the NWX action. The P-515 is going to have the speakers, and similar sounds really to the others, but the others are more meant for stage use where the P-515 is definitely more focused on being a home piano. It’s not bad for stage though, and is cheaper.
