YAMAHA PSR SX 900 Keyboard | Audio USB RFI Noise Issue

RFI noise is introduced to the Main L+R Line outputs whenever the USB cable is connected to the unit, even with no USB data communication.
My current workaround: I use the 5-Pin MIDI connections to sync and USB cable disconnected.

UPDATE: After a few more tests, I conclude that it's a mains power ground loop hum and with no quick solution at the moment. Why no solution yet? Well... The Mains Power adaptor that is supplied by Yamaha (Original Yamaha) does not have any earth/ground pin to the main wall plug. This is a major problem that is creating a ground loop hum. Since my laptop's Mains Power adaptor has a ground pin, connecting the USB from laptop to keyboard with no ground pin, leads to voltage variation between the two devices, inducing a hum at the output audio (because they are connected to a USB mixer, connected to the same laptop). The ground connection of both devices needs to be equal and zero volts. The only solution is to ground the power adaptor of the keyboard. Incidentally, my KORG keyboard has 3-pin grounded mains power and does not suffer from this major issue. This is Yamaha's 1 cent saving strategy on a $3000 keyboard. Using this keyboard on a live stage will surely have hum issues. Disappointing. P.S. My audio leads are TRS balanced and the ground loop issue has nothing to do with it. No USB cable, no issues.

Hello. I hope this comment don't came too late. I have a PSR-SX700 and noticed exactly the same issue, and came to a solution pretty much by accident. It was fixed simply by using a thinner, unbalanced (TS) stereo cable on the main output, a cheap RadioShack Y cable I had! Sometimes the noise comes back, but at a much lower level, almost unnoticeable.

Thank you for pointing out this problem I wonder if you use for the MIDI input output that may resolve the issue

Thats what I currently use, the 5-pin MIDI. Lucky I have a dedicated MIDI-USB rack as well as my audio interface having a 5-pin MIDI option.

I have a problem with a slight squealing sound that started showing up on my speakers and headphones when used. I made sure iPhone and iPad had settings adjusted off as mentioned in troubleshooting, disconnected an internet extender I have. I wonder if anyone else has had this issue.

Thanks for your video. I bought a few months ago that PSR-A 5000. It's more or less the same, just more oriental sounds. I'm having major difficulties trying to use it as a midi keyboard or even export stuff. 1. When I use the audio output it sounds pretty terrible. Both in mono and stereo. And I'm using top notch sound card and headphones. 2a. Exporting a song is pure nightmare. You need a usb stick (in 2022? really?) to export a midi file that is absolute terror when you bring it in the DAW (I use logic). Obviously you can't get the same sounds which is a shame. There should be a yamaha plugin so that you could have your sounds. 2b. When I import a song as an audio, it's also a nightmare. The quality, I don't know. I'm really not convinced. Whereas the sound from the speakers is stellar. It's a beautiful machine.
@RecordingStudio9

1. Are you using TRS balanced cables into a line level input? Which sound card are you using? Do you have the levels correct, both the volume on the keyboard and the sound card channel input Trim. 2a. I normally don't record any audio on my SX-900, so not sure if the USB lead also works as USB storage on Mac to copy the files from. I shall try (I have Windows 10). A MIDI file is just notation, no sound. You can set it up so that MIDI played on LogicX can play on A5000 and the audio from the A5000 is then fed back to your SoundCard for you to record. There is no plugin, hence you buy the keyboard. You can set up LogicX to record MIDI when you play your A5000, then fix/change MIDI on LogicX, and finally let LogicX playback MIDI to A5000 and record the audio back on LogicX as an audio track. 2b. I assume you mean loading a WAV/MP3 on A5000 via USB Stick. Again, I have no issue as the quality is as good as the WAV/MP3 file.

Sounds like an Earth loop issue. Is the laptop power supply also plugged in? You should try an audio isolation device between the keyboards audio outputs and your mixer.

Thanks for the comment. Both keyboard and laptop are on the same power board.
@MistaTerps

Try disconnecting the laptop power supply, you may have an earth loop. You can also try a DI box or a ground loop isolator but usually in my experience it's caused by the laptop power supply.

I use the same USB cable and laptop with my KORG PA3x with no issues. Must be something else. I will look into it.
@PedroCaetano123

In my experience, I''ll appoint to the Tolby Phillips sugestion. It's recommended to have plugs with ground connections, as the mixers manuals usually says. Also the laptops can cause such issues, even unplugged from the electrical plug (only with battery).

I want to buy this I have never own Yamaha only Casio, Roland and Korg . Mainly for brass sounds I kinda want to give Yamaha a try. I was going for modX but I heard so much cons or glitches lately .

I just got my PSR sx900 and have the same problem when the USB connection to the computer is connected along with the line out going into my PA system. It sounds terrible. I have a Yamaha MODX don't have the same problem when connecting the USB + line out to the PA. Somewhat disappointed that Yamaha didn't do a good job shielding the instrument given that I spent more than 2000 for it. Will try using shorter cables with a.DI box. That might work.

this is a very common problem, that can occur with any USB audio or midi gear. possible cheap solutions would be 1) try different USB cable 2) try different USB Port 3) install a PCIe Card, as USB Hub 4) use such Widget, as the IDefender - there are other brands, too. but this one seems to be pretty common. 5) just disconnect, insulate the ground PIN, on the B-Side of your USB cable. thats an annoying issue, but you propably already found out, that its fixable. i hope so. It was just a shitty idea, to introduce USB in Audio Industry. so Its not Yamaha's fault, in first Place^^
@RecordingStudio9
@RecordingStudio9 Год назад
Thanks for the comment. USB is not an issue in the audio world, when properly designed and shielded. My current KORG PA3x, as well as many other keyboards I own(ed) have no issues with USB data, even with my USB cable being 3 meters long (high quality and shielded), unlike the Yamaha. So it is a Yamaha design issue. Unfortunately, there is no solution via USB. I have to use 5-pin DIN MIDI to sync to my PC. Lucky I have a few audio interfaces, like my TASCAM Model 12, that have full in/out 5-pin DIN MIDI.

Hi, it is Ground Loop Issue - not in same potential, simple brumm effect. No problem with your SX900, unconnect your laptop psu.
@RecordingStudio9
@RecordingStudio9 2 года назад
Thanks for your input. I have unplugged the laptop PSU and the issue is still there. For me, it looks like the USB data is not shielded from the audio. Not a ground loop issue. You can hear pulsating noise when data is active on USB. Simply a bad design. Non of my other keyboards or synth have this issue.

It’s annoying. Unlike many other keyboards at the same range of capabilities and price, rest use grounded built in mains power, thus reducing any chance for USB data noise into the audio output.

@@RecordingStudio9 it’s unacceptable don’t you think a keyboard of this price, Yamaha have been no help and just told me to buy a di box…what they should be doing is supplying a grounded power output.

Thanks for confirming my results. Very annoying indeed. A big blunder by Yamaha. I’m 100% sure it’s not ground loop. It’s USB data interference into the audio.

If you have a mic plugged into the keyboard, unplug it and see what happens
@CercleBruggeFan

You need to buy a iDefender+ and problem solved. I use it for my noisy PSR-A5000 and MODX8. It's expensive but it's the only solution to this well known Yamaha problem. The iDefender+ needs to be powered throug usb C, otherwise the problem will continue.

I also have this keyboard this problem is old in this line. The best solution is to always use the MIDI DIN connection and not the USB one. Note that when using USB connected to the computer, all equipment connected to the computer can generate audio interference, especially the computer fans. Connections should not be made in a loop, for example: PSR USB- computer - computer audio - keyboard auxiliary input.

My KORG PA3x arranger keyboard never had this issue. I always used USB-MIDI with the KORG. It's a design issue/fault with Yamaha.
