140-165 hp Yamaha Aircraft Engine Gear Box and Gear Box Conversion Kit by SkyTax. Dan Johnson talks to Teal Jenkins about his gear box adapter plate and gear box for the Yamaha RX 1, 4 cyl, 4-cycle, liquid cooled, EFI or 4 carbs snowmobile engines. With an installed weight with radiators of between 165-175 lbs.
The gear box which is still being tested is capable of handling 200-350 HP.
These aircraft engine conversions are ideal for experimental aircraft, as well as air boats. Currently the engine/gear box/adapters are being used on Just Aircraft Highlander, Rans S20, Rans S21, Bearhawk Patrol, Kitfox aircraft and other popular experimental aircraft.

I had this engine in a 2008 yamaha apex ,it was a fantastic sled ,how does the weight of the engine/gearbox compare to a rotax 912 or even a rotax 582 two stroke

I love my 2006 Fuel Injected Yamaha Snowmobile .. but I thought Rotax part of Bombadier builds a purpose build small airplane engine.. I guess it costs too much ????

Is the engine computer up for handling thin air? Also you need a website for this bad boy. Pretty easy to set up these days from what I understand.

Dan, Edge Performance-Norway is developing a turbo for the Y-Apex engine....200-300 hp...new internals for the 300hp version...not for the lower hp's.

The Yamaha Snowmobile engine mounts a CVT clutch directly to the crank shaft.. no Harmonic balancer come to think about it ..

I agree he should have an external oil cooler. Especially if you want to install a turbocharger.

Itis a Dry sump engine so oil cooler would be easy ..

Seems like a high temp synthetic gear oil could solve the temp problem.

the oil temp isnt THE problem... the cause of the temp is... reflects the stress the gears are under to be resolved with change in gear tooth cut, pitch, & face angles/mesh... & finish/polish peen etc... oil temp is the result

How does it hold up to thrust loads and gyroscopic forces? I often think that most gear boxes never consider the gyroscopic forces as the plane yaws or changes pitch.

I'm pretty sure that anyone who can design and build this kind of gearbox is capable of thinking of such obvious considerations.

And harmonic isolation? He seems confident that the Spragg clutch will deal with harmonics. Centrifugal clutches have been used in the past.

@@PDZ1122 I dont believe that statement for a minute. There are unique forces at work on the housing. This PSRU is developed in modern CadCam, which almost all packages come with structural analysis. Pretty much fool proof nowadays. It is machined from billet, stronger than cast. What I have said above was in no way ment to diminish this persons capability to design this drive. It looks like he is doing well for this newer market

Why not just use the motorcycle version with a built in, highly reliable, gearbox? Then all you'd need is a solid mount for the prop, and could use a chain drive just like the bike would? It's a tried and true system we know to be extremely reliable and easy and cheap to maintain...
