Yamaha's Secret FM Synth...Hidden In Plain Sight (SMAF Showcase) 

Nice! The SMAF synths are very underlooked. They're on par with many late 80s/early 90s arcade sound hardware, yet not enough chiptune people seem to care about them (nor did Yamaha themselves).

This is cool! I did not know about this. Features like this made phones seem like magical devices back in the day... Nowadays it's just a slab of privacy invading glass. Weird how over the years all the fun has been sucked out of it.

Yamaha's MA is a direct competitor to Beatnik Soundbanks that nokia use in 2000s

Soundcards/chips are something that is hardly talked about in computers and mobile tech now a days, its fascinating to see how manufacturers got around the limitations of their day. Also this hardware gives these old phones more of a character than the homogenized iphones and androids of today (as great as they are)

I have an old set of Yamaha speakers, which use Active Servo Technology. I've been using them for decades, and they still sound great. They need external power to function, so are not simple speakers.

The 3.5 mm jack can be used as a output for the phone and then you can mix the phone audio and your voice in post depending of video editing software and time

To be fair, the earlier SMAF chips are kind of like diet OPLs. They're usually just basic FM Synth more in line with the old OPM or OPN series of chips. It wasn't until around the MA-5 until there was a bunch of PCM channels, on par with the OPL 4 imo. (MA-3 did have 8 channels but i mean a ton on par with the OPL4)

4:18 the funny thing about this song is that samsung stole it for use on one of the built in games on certain models, I believe it was called “jump boy” or something like that lol

Remember the Renesas/Dialog SC1444X chips? They look similar to Yamaha SMAF chips. The SC1444X chips can play MIDI files and unfortunately, no further info about the SC1444X synth exists on the internet. :(

a smaller chip, a simpler to wire chip. is better than an opl3.
