Yamaha Star 650 Maintenance - Oil Change With Filter

In this video I narrate as my wife conducts the oil and filter change procedure on the Star / Vstar / Dragstar / XVS / 650. Though I do explain my reasoning as to why I do not first turn on a bike that has been sitting for a week right before I'm about to dump the oil, your choice.
Note that I would have preferred a small 17mm spanner to open the nut below but I could not find it and went with a crows foot as shown in the video.
The filter cover O ring should be inspected and replaced if necessary. If you don't know the last replacement, replace it.
Refilling the oil is a two person job unless you have a big stand on level ground.
I use Yamalube 10w40. Check with your local Yamaha dealer if you are not sure of the proper oil weight.

As a thought, I agree with not changing oil hot. In addition to your points, swapping the filter gets dicey with a hot exhaust. If you have patience, another idea is to change it twice. Change it once with “flushing oil” and run the bike for 15 minutes. Let it cool and change it again with fresh oil and filter. My friend who does this uses the “flushing oil” 5-6 times and then recycles it. I’m too lazy but someone might appreciate it. 😂

Great job! Including your wife and teaching her how to do it really added to it. It's nice that she's interested in learning. Just as an aside, it's now generally accepted that one should wear gloves (latex, nitrile, etc.) to limit the contact with the old oil since it is carcinogenic. I have changed the oil in my cars and bikes for years without them, but with cancer having taken the lives of my relatives and friends I think it's worth the slight inconvenience to keep you safe. Thanks again!

I am in full agreement with you on heating the engine, then draining the oil. I would rather have all of the old oil drip down from the heads by gravity with all of it finding its way to the sump of the engine. I don't know why Yamaha says to do this, but I think it is not the best of ideas.

I just change the oil and filter. I notice now that when the bike is on the kickstand its leaking oil.. Is it possible I didnt tighten the oil screw tight enough. I fell like there is not enough clearance to tork the bolt down with a mokey wrench. But im not sure it would be leaking that much oil. Does the plug need to be replaced or just try tighting it more somehow? could the oil be coming from some where else?

Great !!! I enjoy all of your videos concerning V-Star Maintenance & Repairs, tuning, and always come away impressed !!! No doubt your videos are the best anywhere !!! Concise, good views of what's being done, and done correctly. I like how talking is about what is being done and on subject, no rambling on about worthless information !!! That kind of thing just tunes me out ! I have a section in my RU-vid library with your videos only, knowing that if someone needs to know the "correct" way to get the job done, this is it ! This video is great as you are teaching both, the viewers, and a person never having done this before, just how easy it is done when done for the first time with a patient, knowledgeable instructor, whom is also very positive. Saying "good job" occasionally is so important to help build confidence to the "newbie", and experienced alike !!! Again, impressive video's, all !!! Thank You for sharing your knowledge 😎

Glad you enjoyed it. A torque wrench is a tool by which you can measure how much force you tighten a bolt with. this is measured in ft/lbs or nM, both a measurements of torque. Like opening a jar, how much power of twisting force.

Question on my vstar 650 they say it takes just under 3 quarts I let it drain completely changed the filter put everything back together added just under 3 quarts started it let it warm up turned it off and checked the leave in the glass and it's right in the middle where it should be but I checked it again about 20 mins later after putting my tools away and it's over filled the glass and completely covered but is I start the bike and check it it's back to normal at half glass when the bike is running is it normal to be over filled when cold and at normal level when running and yes I'm checking the level when bike is straight up and down

varying-length bolts around its perimeter in the proper order. I torqued each bolt down gently but securely (the spec in the manual is 10Nm, or 7 ft-lb., so not much), not wanting any to strip or snap. For the oil filter cover and manual calls for 43 Nm (31 ft-lb) of torque on the drain bolt.

what's the torque setting to aim for the bolts during reassembly?
@dv2140
@dv2140 4 года назад
did you ever figure this out?
@ronerie
@ronerie 3 года назад
Torque settings vary according to diameter, bolt or screw threads are dry or pre-lubed, and application. The shop manual, available online free, (although not for every year) has all torque settings. Important to use 650 for 650, 1100 for 1100 engine sizes, and so on, for possible variations. If you can't find that info because of a rush to finish for some reason, I go with, "just snug" until I can find torque numbers. Overtightening stretches the bolt threads, and can damage male & female threads including stripping, breaking now, or next time, etc. I've rebuilt industrial machinery of all sizes for 40 years and from experience, just snug with maybe going more snug later is much better then overtightening. Again, torque info is in shop manual. Another tid bit of info concerns Phillip head screws ! Anything manufactured in Japan uses J.I.S. head screws, NOT Philips They are very similar, but Japan's J.I.S. MEANS, Japanese Industrial Standard, and you will see much better results using J.I.S. screwdrivers or bits. Our Phillips drivers and bits mismatch enough to strip the heads, etc., confounding many as to why, myself included until I found this difference. Held side be side the two bits show very slight differences, but it's enough many times to make a simple job turn into a pain ! I keep sets of J.I.S. #1, #2, & #3 With my arsenal, lol ! Can be found on Amazon among many others.q Hope something here helps ?

No, 20W-50 is fine, just more suitable for warmer climates. Check the owner’s manual to see what the manufacturer calls for. I have a ‘07 V Star 650 and use 10W-40 in mine, but a 20W-50 would be okay, too. I’d recommend the 10W-40 over the 20W-50, though.

Oil should be measured against the level line through the glass and again after running for a minute as the filter will displace oil. The measurement is conducted on level ground with the bike upright. This is the only accurate method.
@kenwittlief255
@kenwittlief255 3 года назад
when you change the filter the bike needs 3 quarts if you dont change the filter the bike needs 2.8 quarts dont bother with the site glass, it will not be correct until you ride the bike 200 yards down the road and the oil pump fills up the new filter. It ALWAYS needs 3.0 qts with a new filter. Just pour it in. Check the level the next day after you ride. It will be correct.
