Nice! Thank you! (Btw, the exact amount of oil according to specifications should be 1,9DL, incase any one cares, I'm sure the eye-leveling works just as well! )
Thanks man. Being that I just bought this one, I just wanted to go through it and do some maintenance for my own peace of mind. I changed the oil and filter, front brakes and final drive oil and I'm off to the next step. Have a nice day and thanks again.
hey man, I've been watching your videos last couple weeks. I find them helpful. Thanks for all the work you've done. I assume 1 qt oil is enough to fill it up. Am I wrong ?
Great videos. You’re a huge help. Just bought my first bike. 2009 V Star 650 Classic. Only 2,800 miles. You think I should replace this? I know miles are low, worried about age.
I don't have anyone to help level out the bike. So I use a brick under the the kickstand. That levels it, just make sure you crack the bolts 1st, before using a brick. You can also use a 2×4 just stack it maybe drill some screws into it.
lol It's not a frequent service that's for sure, 1st one is at 1000 km, and then every 25,000 km after that. these bikes truly are almost maintenance free.
I have a leaky seal in my axle, when we went for our last ride there was a trickle of oil on the rim. Im told that the seal isn't very expensive but is it difficult to replace it?
Hi yowie65, according to the service manual if there is any damage or leakage, have a dealership service the unit. Disassembling and servicing the final gearcase requires considerable expertise and a number of special tools. if there is any problem with the final gearcase, it is best to have a qualified shop service it. Hope this helps you out. Cheers!
Hi Bernbo. Not sure if you still reply to people, I seem to be leaking oil whenever I drive it, out the crack where the final drive connects to the disc, idk whatever that gap is. Not sure how to fix, think it could be the rear seal
Why is it 1/2 the videos show the bike tilted on the kick stand and 1/2 show it either level on a stand or the hub level in a vise when they fill it. Which is the correct way. Dealers too show it tilted on the kick stand, and nobody mentions which is the right way. It can make a big difference how much more it takes.
Hey Travis, The filter will have an arrow on it that will show you which direction the flow goes. Point the arrow toward your carburetor. If there’s no arrow, the larger side of the filter will go toward the carb.
Great video. I took off the back tire while I was cutting down the rear fender struts to bob out the bike and didnt pay attention to how i left the back wheel. It leaked oil out the shaft so I am going to drain whatever is left and refill it.
@Bernbo thanks brother, very helpful info! Great video, btw! I just got my first bike which is a V Star 650 for only 2250 and only 10,000 miles! This will come in handy!
good video. also I recently loosened the axle bolt on the final gear side when I was tightening it back I noticed that it kept spinning and wouldn't come to a torque end. not until I put a socket on the other side axle bolt was I able to tighten sown axle bolt as recommended. is that normal or do I have a problem with me axle bolt or Barrens. tku sir very much I do enjoy your videos.
How often would you go a step further and lubricate the final drive splines? Is it recommended that you do it after so many miles? Thank you in advance.
Hey PJ, I'll put a link here that answers your question. I'm sorry I dont have a video on this. Mine was last done when I got my new White walls installed. www.starbikeforums.com/forums/49-v-star/1495-lube-those-final-drive-splines-save-$$$.html Hope this helps you out. Cheers!
My first time to have a bike with a shaft drive...I have a 2004 dragstar 400 but i don'tnt know how to change the gear oil until i saw this video..many thanks sir..im still confuse about this shaft, does it have a 2nd gear that needs oil change? Pls help me..God bless
@@bernbo ... I've tried to make a point... ALL instructions from their books is on the side of caution, if they do not warn, and something happen, builds a bad reputation... ... my car is 16 years old, anti-freeze replacement is recommended every 20000kms... it is green-ish still after 74 000 and does what is suppose to..
Hey Miller Tizzy, not to sure about that, I just did a quick search on Yamalube Friction Modified Shaft Gear Oil anfd found that it is for sealed wet brake final drives and standard differentials of all Yamaha products. ... Not for use in '09 and newer VMAX. They do say standard differentials of all Yamaha products though. Myself I would stay with the standard YAMALUBE shaft drive gear oil 80w. Hope this helps you out. Cheers!
Bernbo thanks for the reply brother and well... now im wondering if i should put that in or not... its the only stuff i could find online when i looked up yamalube drive shaft oil.. got a link to what you use? also do you recomend the k&n air filter for our bikes?
Miller Tizzy here is a link www.yamahagenuineparts.com/yamalube/yamalube.asp?currentPage=2&shopcat=yamalube&start=3&Year=&Model=&NumRecords=30 just look down the page a bit, i think its like $8.95. I would recommend a K&N air filter but make sure you adjust your fuel to air mixture as the K&N filter allows so much more air flow.
It's okay, gets the job done, better than over cranking on a bolt and stripping it. Mine cost about 10 bucks as well. I Can't afford 100 bucks for a wrench, wish I could lol. Cheers!
***** I'm like you, I'd rather use a torque wrench on everything as to stripping a bolt, nut or threads inside your casing especially as expensive as bike parts are. Thank you for the video.
Neal Armstrong Hey Neil thats a good question, i wish I could answer it for you, not sure if you can use different gear oil's i imagine it would be ok, but i would just stick to manufacture's recommendation. .
Berno do you have a video on removing the back signal lights? Im trying to install bew hard case saddlebags with lights built in but dont know how to remove the stock ones. Any suggestions would really be appreciated. I follow many of your videos and learned alot, so thanks for that!
Sorry I don't have a video on that. I think it is pretty straight forward though. If you remove the licence plate holder you should see the wireing, there is only a few bolts to remove the signal assemble. As for the wiring you may want to remove the rear fender to access that, so you can reroute the wiring to the bags. check this link out, it might help. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JsmAC_eCeeU.html Hope this is of some help.
Question, any suggestions on a batwing fairing? Im doing some updates/changes/mods myself and need a batwing fairing to complete the look without having to go to a dealer which i dont think they even make. I didgo on amazon and im leary on ordering one and it doesnt fit. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Bike looks great and i got my crash bars on. Happy girl here!
Lillian Hey Lillian, check out Motorcycle Super store, I have bought stuff there before no problem, like White Wall tires my Solo Bag ect... www.motorcycle-superstore.com/20293/i/memphis-shades-batwing-fairing hope this helps you out. That's great you got the Crash Bars on. Takeiteass!
+Bernbo I'm sure you are right in any case :) but I thought that the angle of the bike while it is on kickstand may somehow change the final level of the oil after replacement. It seems very sensitive as i understood from your explanation in the video. Thanks a lot for your answer.
