Yamaha Star 650 Quick Carburetor Repair / Clean 3 of 3

In this video we start with the rear carb mikuni of the vstar / star 650 cruiser, carefully disassembling and then conducting an inspection. In removing the specific components we can see where the clog is, easily removed with carb cleaner and compressed air. The rubber components are re-dressed and the carb is re-assembled.
The bike is then tested with an auxiliary gas can, and once approved, with no leaks, the bike is completely re-assembled.

Ok I was about to clean my carbs when I came across this video. Thought my workbench would temporarily hold the removed parts BUT I’m now negotiating the purchase of a DeLorean for temporary part storage like instructed in the video. 😂 Was planning on getting one someday so this just hastened the process!😂 Seriously this is a very instructive video with or without a DeLorean😂

Dude, Retro Tech. This video is amazing. I'm not near as well versed as you but have replaced my fair share of carbs in machines and watched more than my fair share of videos. I never comment on videos but felt I need to tell you this video is AMAZING. WOW!! So much so that I'm going to send it to my female friend whos completely scared to death to tackle her carbs (I'd help but I live 250 miles away) and I have no doubt she'll be able to handle due to this excellent video. Well done sir, I look forward to watch more of your videos. Again amazing job.

I just did this and it worked. Let it warm up for a while and gradually worked the choke in and had great throttle response with no choke. I finished the job at about 11 and wanted to run it down the road. Ran great until I tried to get on the throttle in 2nd and then bogged. I did have the cover off my air filter and I’m not sure if the excess air would cause that or not, but I put the bike up since it was so late.

Halelujah! I've been suffering from this for YEARS and have had the thing re-jetted almost YEARLY (well, each year I decide to ride). This very problem has actually made me lose enjoyment for getting the bike out and fussing with it each riding season - so much so, I haven't ridden in three years. It just gets TIRESOME having it towed to the Yamaha repair shop and paying for a full carb-cleaning and/or re-jetting. Got it pulled out in the garage now and I am going to attempt tonight! One thing - you've done a FANTASTIC job walking us through the fix, but what about prevention? I see you're response below WRT draining the carbs upon storage - but any additives that we should look at? There's just (seemingly) no getting away from ethanol-based gasoline anymore...
@retrotechandelectronics
@retrotechandelectronics 3 года назад
I fill mine with E0 gas. There's a website for stations all across the US. www.pure-gas.org Short of that, there are fuel stabilizers you can add to the gas to mitigate the ethanol in it.

Got underneath there last night and found that _someone_ (all carb work has only ever been done by a Yamaha dealer) had rounded out 4 of the eight screws (mine are all #1 Philips head). Great video. Any chance you have a video on what you did to the front carb solenoid? I just had a failure on mine and pulled to try to clean up and get working but it did not do anything. Then, after messing with the wire where it connects to the solenoid by pushing it in and wiggling it around a bit it started working. After seeing your video it sounds like this may have been a common problem. Did you just add epoxy to the top to hold the wire in place better or did you cut into the top at all to make a better connection then add epoxy?

Hi, I'm new to this. I think your videos on this bike are incredible. I've watched so many and "liked" them all. I have followed your procedures for checking the fuel system. My issue seems to be somewhat opposite. The bike idles fine and just off ides is also fine. Easy on the throttle is also fine. At a certain point under load the bike starts to breakup, and either is not getting enough fuel or could be the ignition. It was fine and all of a sudden during a ride this issue arose. I'm having a difficult time to determine which. Any help would be appreciated. Thanking you in advance. Peter

Yes if you know the bike is going to have the same gas in the tank for over a month, put 4 ounces of Seafoam in the full tank. Its $8 for a 16 ounce bottle at Walmart. It will stabilize 16 gallons of fuel. It will ALSO clean your jets if they become clogged, as long as the bike still runs, so you will NEVER NEED TO CLEAN YOUR CARBS by taking them apart - ever! Esp if you park the bike for the winter - $2 worth the Seafoam in the tank will prevent this from happening.
