Here is a cool Yamaha upright piano I found at Apollo Piano in Chico, California. This is one of the tallest uprights Yamaha makes, with several other models having different form factors, but the same height. It is a pretty looking piano with a very good sound.

It's amazing the tone and sound quality of this upright piano.

I have an older U3 which I purchased used about 15 years ago for $4500. The piano technician that I bought it from said it was a “dark” sounding U3, meaning it didn’t have that typically bright sound of a Yamaha, which was fine by me. I like a more muted sound. It’s not perfect, but I do enjoy it. The biggest issue for me is the lack of a rich bass which is understandable in an upright. I first owned a Yamaha grand 5’3” and a 6’ Baldwin grand. In comparison I like the U3 better than the Y baby grand but neither come anywhere close to the Baldwin. The bass on the Baldwin was incredible. Also owned a Yamaha Clavinova several years ago which filled a different function and provided many other options that can’t be done on an acoustic. Have the upright because of room constraints. Will also be looking for another newer digital keyboard again to play and experiment with. Anyway, just thought I would share my experience FWIW. Love your reviews. Thank you.

Another great video. I enjoyed your composition. I'm learning piano now after 51 years on this earth. I've been watching your videos to understand different pianos, makes and models, tones, play-ability etc. I appreciate the education. It's interesting to me that comments on the sound are all over the place. No bass...nice bass, no mids....balanced.... bright, boxy etc. I have no idea. I'll go with your pro ear. The Yamaha U3 will be on the list of pianos to try. Thanks.

Wait practice? Do u need a grand piano for performing?
@Thiago-px9ev
@Thiago-px9ev 4 года назад
@@danielsheppard5624 Yep, in an acoustic concert. An upright piano needs a wall on its back for a better ressonance, while on a grand piano you can simply open its lid and project the sound directly to the crowd. Finally, the upright usually have worse key action and pedaling, although it may be untrue on some top of line models. Of course in a small hall you dont need a concert grand or even a grand, but in most cases you will need one.

@Ken Kaneki in general baby grands are a no go unless you are a casual player or want one for display purposes without breaking the bank. Don't get me wrong, they can still sound fine but it's not suitable for concerts compared to 6ft+ grands at the minimum

With my own studio uprght Kawai, I found it sounded better not against a wall. The sound from the sound board is muffled against a wall, so I moved it into the room where the back of the sound board is free to express sound more. Here the piano seems to be back to back with another similar.

If I would have to come up with a phrase to define the sound of this piano I would say, well-balanced. Yes, the bass could be stronger but the pitch is spot-on and it blends nicely with the other sections of the piano: the mid-range is gorgeous; the treble is sparkly and clean. Altogether, a nice job! Well done, Yamaha!

I tried the YAMAHA U3 and when I play it, it sounds like a YAMAHA baby grand, my friend who is a piano tuner he says that the YAMAHA U3 is a studio piano, that's the best Upright Piano I ever play.
@ThePianoforever
@ThePianoforever 5 лет назад
I think you will find that the Yamaha U3 is 52 inches high and that would classify it as a vertical grand and not a studio that would be 45 inches high. The greater height would allow it to have a larger soundboard and bass strings more in line with a horizontal grand and that is what you are hearing.

How does upright piano structure sound different than grand? one hand the upright is near a wall and is closed in front , and rear but not the case In grands in top and bottom, however upright is closer to your face (the string/ soundboard)

Had a new-condition U3 once, I would recommend used U3:s and if one can find U2:s too to intermediate students (I like to think myself as one). Some of U3:s have been able to beat even some new Yamaha models in sound to my ears.. (I hate too bright ones, also some (cheaper) Yamahas just have too slippery plastic keys, these I can manage having accustomed to real ivory) Also I find in brand new Yamaha uprights action often a tiny notch too stiff/heavy for my liking so private owned used ones I have actually often liked best.. Boston:s biggest upright was also to my liking for the price range, it beat way more expensive Yamahas to my ears and ivory replica keys were excellent.. Please a review on one of those.. (and a Bach piece or easy Chopin nocturno/prelude ;-)

Why it sounds different than other black U3'S it has a warmer rather than brighter mess of Yamaha, or the strings and Hammers was replaced by European strings and Hammers?

I'm impressed just how clear every note in "Things that make you stronger" sounded on this recording. Is this just the recording being exceptionally clear, or is the piano's sound so precise? I'm hoping that you'll soon find a Bechstein Concert 8, and the Kawai K-600 or K-800 to compare. The Concert 8 is the best upright I've ever played, I like both the action and sound of it.

I'd have to rate the piano as having potential. I wasn't really satisfied with any of the ranges. The treble lacked the crisp "alive" sound that other U's have, the alto/tenor seemed a bit held back and as James said, the bass can use work as James expressed. But, I think voicing changes to make it a little more alive and warm in the bass are all that's needed to bring out its potential.

Hi James, It's OK but it's very bright...doesn't seem to have the rich sound that adds to emotional content. Having said that I'm more critical now after having watched many of your videos:}

It's funny how people's ears are different. I didn't find this piano particularly bright. When James played the initial treble part I thought it was mellow (especially compared to the YUS5 he played in an earlier video). It would be nice if the piano didn't have another upright directly behind it.

I didn't like it because there's no tonal difference in the sound. It just goes from soft to a little louder and that's it. There is so much more to music than that. This is my first time hearing this model.
