If you getting nasty noise while starting your engine or you only hear the starter and the motorcycle won't crank over this video is for you. Compelete step by step tutorial here!
This video was a lifesaver.. few weeks ago my 1100 starter clutch went out. I debated taking it to a shop but was quoted $1300, since I am a heavy equipment mechanic I decided to order a new big roller set from an aftermarket company and give it a go. Used this video alone from start to finish and was done in about 4hrs..... It has never started so smooth so I suspect the PO sold it to the dealer when it started going out. Lasted 5k with a start and stop clunk... Saved my riding season.
The brand was Ideal on eBay, just looked for the big roller type... Reviews were decent enough and for $100 or so if it goes again I'd probably just get the same one. Or by that time I may have went to a raider😂
This is without a doubt one of the best DIY videos I’ve ever viewed. Pace was perfect. Instructions were clear and precise. I believe I could do this without viewing it again. Awesome! And many thanks, too!
This man should do a tutorial on anything he fixes. By far the most helpful and easily understood (even with the accent) thing that I’ve watched on RU-vid. Thanks for putting in the effort to help half assed diy mechanics like myself.
This was hands-down, the best video for helping me to complete this job. I am definitely no mechanic but because of this I was able to do it myself and save a lot of money. Thank you!
Have you done it ? Everytime I try to adust the split gear with screwdriver the top gear chain move clock wise which misalign my timing ..:((( How do you move the split gear without affecting the timing alignment?
I agree with the last comment made this man is a genius Best video instructions I’ve ever had. Job went perfectly smooth, 4 1/2 hours. Never would’ve got this job done without this guy. Few mechanics didn’t even wanna do the job because the bike was too old and others wanted my arm and my leg I never leave RU-vid comments but you deserve it. Thank you very much. Cory
Excellent Demonstration my friend good lighting good step by step proceedures in the correct order and ive been a 37 year professional bike mechanic so thats really saying something. keep up the good work cheers
I'd like to thank everyone involved with making this video. I watched the video, followed the instructions to a tee. I ordered the parts online and was able to repair my bike to perfection. The best thing of it all, I never worked on a bike in my life, a motorcycle anyway. Thanks again, good job, keep up the good work!!!

I’m really impressed with your work. This made every step clear and easy to follow. I really appreciate the warnings about the potential problem parts. With your help I am confident I can tackle this job myself. Thank you!
Watched a couple videos and this guy by farrr was one of the best videos I’ve watched.. he explains everything you NEED to know ! Very organized! Thank you sir!
Thank you. Very well done. My 1100 VStar is making a lot of noise cranking over and now won’t start so I’m sure it’s the starter clutch. One small addition to your video would be the sound of the bike trying to start before you changed the starter clutch. Just a thought. Thanks again.
Yes exactly, my starter just whines when it spins but doesn't try to turn the engine , idk if I have a starter problem or a starter clutch problem, nobody had posted the difference in sound and told how it feels
I've watched dozens of videos on this project for over 2 years. After watching this one I finally ordered the parts and installed it today. It was a piece of cake, thanks to this video. All the others made it look like a nightmare. Very well done.

Damn good video. I may have this same issue , not sure yet. My 1100's starter drags and will only make a few strokes and stops. Parts store says my battery checks out..To me that's questionable. Supposedly the previous owner as soon as he bought it used it was not running. Claims he did this job and also the stater. Self admits he's no mechanic. I don't half believe he did anything. Said he spent 400.00 on parts. Anyways you was thoughro , you didn't speak fast , nice pace. Your voice was clear. One of the best mechanical vids I ever seen. Hats off to you sir.
Wow!! Thanks brahh!! I'm so appreciative - wish I had this tutorial about 6 years ago - I had a VStar couldn't figure out why it would not start... SmH - it's going to help me now. 🙏🏽🤙
Wow! You are on point. Great organization and explanations of everything. I don't think there could be a better video made of this. Thanks for doing this for us.
Enhorabuena!
great video mi amigo. I went to start my '02 Vstar 1100 classic this morning and sure enough - I got that dreaded "sound" of the starter whirring but not engaging. I'm shopping for a kit now and thanks to your video, am not at all intimidated by the task ahead of me. Thanks!

Thanks for all the detail and instructions. I feel confident I can get my starter fixed at home, having watched this. I did not want to put alot of money into this 20 year old bike, as I'm considering trading it in. You have saved me a bundle.
You rock, sir! Very good video, good explanations. Finally did it, used a cardboard-sketch of the gasket to remember where each screw belongs. Had to adjust timings though as i messed up with the marks... what a labour of pain
thnk you do your video it was SPOT ON !!! i followed all the steps carefully and everything went fine bike starts and runs expected thank you again 100% the best video out there ! and dont be afraid to make marks on bike to align timing marks AWSOMENESS !!!!

I haven' t had this kind of problem ( hope it will never happen ). Anyway, I 've looked at your vid several times, amazed how a precise mechanic and teacher you are
excellently explained..... I can tell you know what your doing & I will be watching again as I change mine out. Well done-thanks. I think I will get a lift first however.
I had starting problem with my Yamaha VXS 1100 Drag Star and after I had watched this film I think I can do the job with my self. Now the job is done and my bike starts. Thank’s for this VERY GOOD video!
I really liked the video and your instructions. Right to the point and very good camera angle. It would have been nice to have the torque lbs for everything but that was no big deal. Thank you so much for your time and trouble making a great video!

Just finished fixing my 2002 vstar 1100 starter clutch using this video as a guide. This video really helped, thanks to (Do it yourself Motorcycle repairs Guy).
Thank you very much. This video was very well thought out. You explained everything perfectly. I change my clutch earlier this year. I watched plenty of videos and got me the Manuel.I'll tell you my friend I wish I seen your video before I got into that job. It was quite frustrating . When I watched your video you made it look so easy wow! You got a new fan. I think you should be making a lot of these step-by-step videos.
I am an electrician by trade and am SCARED to death of working on gas engines. Sir I watched this video 7 times before I started took on this project. Your instructions were perfect and from start to finish this only took me 2 hours! Instead of spending 900$ to have a mechanic do this I only spent 150$ for the starter clutch! It also gave me an excuse to buy a few tools I wanted. If anyone is wondering the Milwaukee mid range 18v 1/2 drive impact worked WONDERFUL! Thank you so much for this video.

Thank you very much, your explanation and description of all the work was perfect, I am french canadian and all your explanation was easy to follow and clearly understandable, I am not a mechanic at all and the complete job took me near 3 hours (including near half an hour just to clean old gasket:)), Thank you very much, doing this job with your help give a lot of pride and save me a lot of money.
Thank you for the attention to detail. I'm re-assembling a basket case '04 V Star. I've been wondering about an extra washer I have after putting the side cover back on. I'll check it against the shift shaft from the outside, then disassemble to reinstall washer. Ugh. I wish people wouldn't take things apart when they don't know what they're doing. Another point you may emphasize- after magneto snatches the cover from your hands, check clutch cable bracket/arm position for alignment. It may prevent cover from seating correctly. Again, great job at simply explaining everything and keep up the good work! 👍
Brother I thank you so much for this video. This is gonna be the first time I've done this on a bike. You explained it all very well and easy to understand. Great job. I will be useing this video to fix my bike. Cant wait to get in the wind again. Thank you again.
I had the same issue with my starter clutch several years ago now. Unfortunately I didn't have a pneumatic impact wrench or any experience in doing anything this extensive on a motorcycle. However, I have had years of experience in repairing car engines, overhauls , clutch replacements, and just about any repairs that could possibly come up on older autos. While a very scary operation I couldn't afford having the work done at the going rate of $90/hr when was getting paid only $10/hr at the time. So I forged ahead and did all the work and while the removal and re-installation of the flywheel bolt was very difficult, I was still able to get that done. The secret is to work methodically and slowly taking my time to get everything right. Like I said, this was several years ago and now my bike kicks over very nicely every time.
Sorry I didn't catch your name but you did a GREAT job on this video, I'm not sure I'm going to attempt this fix, but it's a big help knowing what's involved.
Thank you very much for this video. I followed all your steps and things went just the way you showed on your video. Doing this myself saved me an $850.00 charge at the repair shop. It was actually a very enjoyable project. Thanks again.

Nicely done. We'll explained and showing us what and where as well as our possible pitfalls are. I am new to taking it apart but I fell if I need to I could do it with the vid. Thanks

Glad I found this. I am repairing a buddies bike with the same problem. I am a professional heavy equipment mechanic. His methods, shop practice, explanations, and demonstrations are top notch. My only regret is that he did not expand the assembly into the same step by step. While it may seem self explanatary, it may not be to a novice. Great job on a great video.
