I can't believe how easy yours came apart. I just destroyed the float needle sleeve with a screw extractor on a bike I just picked up. I can't thank you enough for this video!!

You did an amazing video of showing & telling all to cleaning and rebuilding your carb. I’ve done them on automobiles but never a bike. My carb works like new now thanks again and keep up the good work.

Thank you great video. I have a Royal Star (4 carbs) much more difficult to remove and replace and sync them up, and all that jazz. This would be a joy to work on. I'm leaning toward replacing the Royal Star with the Road Star.

Dont know if you still monitor this vid but if so...where should the cleaner spray out of the brass accel pump nozzle? Straight out or pointed to the back? I think mines clogged . Everywhere else it flows thru. Any tip if accelerating pump is clogged?

Always replace the float needle. The rubber tip gets deformed from sitting. When you remove the idle jet hold it up to the light and see if daylight can be seen.

That carb looks new compared to mine off an 03' 1600. I'm not getting any cleaner out of the acc pump nozzle. A wire goes thru the opening but nothing comes out the nozzle

I have a question. I have a 2003 1600 Roadstar. I changed the exhaust from two pipes to one and now she backfires pretty bad. Do I need to rejet it? What do I do?

I want to thank you for taking your time and recording the step by step for taking the carb apart. I have an 05 RS and haven't put many miles on the last few years cuz grand kids and stuff other priorities. I live in the cold canada so the bike goes in the heated basement usually get pulled out and run and road etc.. well I got lazy and it sat 2 years from the last ride season. My method of storage turn off the pet caulk and run the engine until the carb is dry. I have been doing that for 40 years on engine storage with no problem. Well I took it out and it started great and ideled perfectly but after a few minutes run not so good and fuel leaking out of the carb everywhere . Well that's to your tip regarding the oring on jet seat . This is where the jet seat is sealed to the aluminum carb body. Exactly like you said the oring was shrunken and wasn't sealing. So it's really something everyone should know thank you. Also with an electric fuel pump the symptom can come and go. I got up a 4am this morning as to not get interrupted and found the inside of my carb still like new 30k on bike only. But like you demonstrated in your video the jet seat came out with no effort. In fact also when I removed the oring with a pick it split. I keep standard and metric oring kits on hand luckily. Well a smaller oring worked. Just put it on and made sure it was proud of the groove. Cant say what size it was my vernier caliper had a dead battery. So for probably 25 cents it's fixed and actually the bike runs better cold now so whatever else I did following your steps worked awesome . Sorry for the long reply but I'm sure other RS owners can think about what I never would have thought of had it not been for you excellent video. I have subscribed and really am happy I found you. All the best to you. Stay safe. Map

What year is that carburetor? Mine is a 2001 xv1600 and you show a plug for a jet and mine has an opening. I have having problems with my carb. It runs great on idle and at high idle. It's just when transitioning from low to high, it stutters like it want's to die. Then it catches. Any suggestions?

That bike was 1999 ... how is your ACC pump in the Carburetor? When you turn the throttle you should see gas squirting out of the little spray nozzle. That not working would have the "FLAT SPOT" effect .
@arta2870
@arta2870 4 года назад
@@DoityourselfMotorcyclerepairs It squirting plenty of fuel. There has to be something with the carb. I pulled it out again last night and it's clean a whistle. No ports clogged. New tps and adjusted to specs.

I keep hearing this. For someone who is about to try cleaning his carbs for the first time, what would you recommend using in its place?
@nocount4339
@nocount4339 4 года назад
Use a MINERAL BASED oil, viscosity isn't important.
@nicstr28
@nicstr28 4 года назад
It's a temp lube. No lube remains in a carb after fuel runs thru it. Wd-40 is fine.

Already subscribe brother !! Is there any way I can probably send you a quick video to show you what’s going on with my bike ?? I know it would be hard to diagnose but maybe some idea you can have ... yesterday I install new pilot jet (40)and main jet (170) aswell with the needle put the mixture screw at 3.5 turns, Idols perfect but when I give it throttle sounds like a bunch of air coming in also when I get on first I really have to Revit up so the bike and go. Also change the manifold, spark plugs. Thanks for the help!!

@DoityourselfMotorcyclerepairs

It is most likely gummed up from the old gas... usually if you spray carburetor cleaner all over the area trying to get some down there and move it in the circular back-and-forth motion it'll loosen up and come off... it's really important that you clean this up the motorcycle to run correctly... thank you so much for watching the video and please subscribe it will help me out

Eric, try sealing your tank with some Por-15. They sell a kit just for cleaning your tank, and you may not need to clean the carb, replace pump & filter over and over…

I rebuilt my roadstar carb which improved everything but after a couple days it started acting up. It needs choke to run now. Doesn't have to be all he way out but if I don't have it out bike will die. After driving for like 15 mins I can put choke in. Some people said it could be the spark plugs which I replaced but no change. Any thoughts?
@DoityourselfMotorcyclerepairs
@DoityourselfMotorcyclerepairs 6 лет назад
If you need the choke out for the bike to idle and/or to make it run properly that means the bike is running too lean ( needs more fuel ) The choke is making it run richer and compensating for whatever is going on ( or not going on...) Go back in to the Carburetor...check for anything that could cause it to run lean. Here is few ideas...is your gas tank clean inside and NOT letting junk in the carb. ...check for any cracked or open vacuum lines ....where is your air/fuel mixture screw adjustment ( I like 2.5 turns from fully seated) ....go back inside the carburetor and double check your work If the bike ran great after your initial work chances are you will find the problem once you are back inside...Hope this helps and thanks for tuning in my video

+rockynymia I agree with going back in, but understand that dirt, dust, contaminates from a rubber hose that deteriorates from the inside can also plug up a jet or circuit responsible for air/fuel delivery at different speeds. I have an 04 Roadstar 1700, which unlike this video, has a small feed hole in the casting next to the main jet. Only fine wire will fit. But it also has a air/fuel mixture screw outside the float bowl behind the bowl & drain screw. It sits inside a well next to the carb heater and feeds the intake with the throttle valve closed. No cap, so I found if I screw it in and count the turns, it came out to 2 1/2 - 3 turns. Each jet controls fuel at different speeds, while air bleeds control how much entering air which allows more or less fuel to flow. It's like an open soda, if you turn it upside down, it comes out but slowly, if you poke a hold in the top, comes out faster & smoothly. I have a factory service manual, but it leaves a lot to be desired. Follow each jet, passage or circuit to see where it goes with wire or air. There are at least 6 circuits for most carbs and each one adds to the other during operation. The ones on the engine side to the throttle valve are misunderstood. They allow fuel & air when close at idle, but provide extra fuel to help the transfer of fuel as the valve (Butterfly) open, as well as transfer slots, accelerator squirt, cold enrichment. I have been an ASE master tech since 78 and rebuilt thousands of carburetors over the years. Each is different and you have something that came loose and plugged a jet that was clean after it was running again. Best of luck.

Check the O-rings and for cracks on intake. There’s a vid on running some Seafoam through the carbs and running it for a couple minutes. Could be stick intake valve, the Seafoam could help…
