I busked a 62 tenor for 5 years back in the 80s before joining a busy band and gigging it all over the country. Like yours, mine was never serviced and never once missed a beat despite being carried around in one of those old 'Saxman' thin and completely unpadded vynyl gig bags. It was an incredible horn and the intonation was 100% spot on. I sold it about 10 years ago as I fell prey to the 'fancy a new one' mind set. Despite now playing a really lovely Hansons LX raw, I've regretted it ever since. I didn't realise at the time how special it is to have such a robust horn that has perfect tuning; a truly wonderful instrument.

The 82ZII with the V1 neck is very hard to beat. I have one and love it. The only other horn that comes close is my early SX90R. Yamaha makes incredible instruments period

How to make impeccably made Yamaha sound like an old Mark VI? Shoot the Yamaha with a bullet through the horn, whack the keys with a wrench, then blow through it and you have a perfect "mellow" Mark VI.

From this side it sounds soft and mellow not over bright and not very dark.you played a vey nice track that suits the horn cool.Thanks Dan.😎

Hi Dan, that horns great. Nice vintage tone from this end. That said how much do you think the Dan Forshaw sound is influence it? My Yani TWO20 is dark and you can get a more vintage influenced sound with the Theo Wanne Ambika 2. Keep up the good work Dan and thank you.

Hi Dan...looking forward to the MK 6 comparison. Also curious to see how it stacks up to the Eastman you reviewed.

Awesome! Thanks so much. I am considering selling my Conn 10m to get a Yamaha 82z for approximately,3000.00. A store has had it for about a year and a half. What do you think. The Conn needs a repad. Let me know.

Hello Dan, great review and very good vlog. I am alto player and interested in Lupifaro platinum saxophone and Amsterdam winds. Would not you make review about these horns? Thanks a lot.

Hi Dan, Great video. To the best of my knowledge, the oversized neck screw has something to do with changing the resonance point on the horn. You probably wouldn't notice when playing right out of the box. But, if you were to take it off and replace it with a normal sized neck screw, it would probably feel different.
@darylbeebe6517
@darylbeebe6517 5 лет назад
I have the regular 82z. Did this one have metal resonators? I see it had a different screw on the neck.

Did you ask to review the unlacquered version to compare with your Mark VI and the Andy Sheppard and Eastman or was it just potluck?

Hi Dan, how does the Yamaha blow in the altissimo register? Would also great to hear your thoughts on how it compares to the Yani TW020 as they are sort of same general price range - I think you have said before the Yani goes effortlessly to altissimo, great ergonomic etc..

Thing is...reviewing a horn...I think it's hard to say if it's bright or dark using one mouthpiece and reed. Most of us know it's more the mouthpiece/reed and neck that make a difference in the sound more than the sax itself. I would have used a Theo Wanne Amika or Jody Jazz DV NY to test ...something between (a do it all) like the Jody Jazz DV...then a JJ Super Jett or Theo W Durga... Yammies (saxophones) DO IMHO still belong at the bright end...though, not painfully bright as on their piano's. Yamaha sax's are more for people planning on performing for crowds where they WANT projection/brightness. A sax setup that will cut through the drums and electric guitar...etc.Comes down to what we're looking for in a sax. How we're planning to use it. If for just personal enjoyment and maybe playing for only a few friends/family...i'd stick with a setup that's on the dark side....Like a bronze Yanagisawa. Keilwerth "bright"???? Not the one' I've heard played (e.g. MKX and SX90's...no matter the mouthpiece/reed/player...if we're to say a sax is bright or dark at all...mouthpiece/reed/neck--gear wise are more responsible).

Hey Dan, been looking around for one of these brand new. Can only find the standard model. Where did you purchase this horn or do you know where to get an atelier model?

I had a 62 purple logo, never took it to a tech for 20 years, just adjusted the regulation screws when needed, I regret selling it.

I have a vintage legacy horn and am going to a Chateau 90 copper body horn. A very big sounding horn. Most likely to big for the intimate venues you work. A great party/function band horn, very insurable and replaceable. Not as rugged but I'm over the old horn thing.

Good intro to the new Yammy, was it a personal choice to have the lack of f# key option? Have to say it sounded brilliant, if I could suggest a possible HR MP contrast to metal? All good, regards🎷👍

@DanForshaw
@DanForshaw 5 лет назад
Hi Sean - it's got a much more 'refined' and focused sound than the 'normal' 82Z. I've some video that I shot at Sax.co.uk back in November that I'm trying to find a place in a future Vlog for!

Dan Forshaw awesome, I bet it has to do with the neck. I have the 82ZII From reading the neck is the biggest change made. I have several different necks & one is close to what is being used now, a smaller bore. But still curious about the atelier. I switched from my mark VI about 2 years ago.
