In Swahili, Yams, Potatoes and Sweet potatoes have names that literaly translate into Main potatoes (yams) European Potatoes(Potatoes) and Sweet Potatoes(sweet potatoes) Let's spare the taro(coco-yam) as it is regarded as a yam here which will further confuse some.

am from west africa , nigeria to be precise the world largest yam producer of about 65% west africa account for about 90% of the world yam production, there isn't a week i don't eat yam, lol, you haven't really been seen much yam in western countries because nigeria agriculture production isn't as developed as it is in western countries , we don't even have enough in nigeria let alone export to other countries but nigeria just increased it yam export this year as my country is trying to boost agricultural production am sure you will see more yams in the years to come because yam export is up and growing.

I love yeams, and i don't hate but i don't like sweet potatos that much. The taste is so different of both that its weird to know that you guys from the north call it yeams. x) Here we call the yams as: Inhame, and the swet potato a sweet potato, or: batata doce, in brazilian portugese. x)
@TrueFoodTV

"inhame" isn't far off from yam -- that's so interesting! And yes, I agree, they taste SO different!
@PlantKingBoy

How Does it Grow? i realised i wrote yam wrong (yeam). haha. x) If you can, try to taste "mandioca" (or "aipim" like they say in other few areas of my country) don't know the english name but from what google says it's: "manioc" ?. It is the most different texture of root that i ever tried so far, in comparation to a potato for exemple, since this root don't disolve completly when cooked and you can actually find a few of the fibers of the root, like there was a string inside of it. And after cooked, some people like to fry it like french fries and it's soo good. x) A few tag names in case you wanna try to search it online: - Aipim frito (Fried aipim) - Mandioca frita (Fried manioc)

Great video, There are also Yams Native to the cold North that are not found in Africa Dioscorea Caucasica is one of them. Aa very tastey yam that can go down to -15c The ones Native to Africa cannot grow in the cold and need heat to grow. There are also some poisonous yams and these have alternate leaves. The edible ones have oposite leaves. Dioscorea Cayenensis and Rotundata Yellow and White Yams are the ones mainly grown in Africa as a staple.

I've actually never had a yam. Here in the UK, Sweet Potatoes are plentiful in supermarkets and I love them in every shape and form (If you haven't tried Sweet Potato Wedges; they're delicious) but Yams can only be found in small shops and tend to be quite expensive so I'm yet to try one.

Thomas, it's exactly the same here. I will admit the one time I tried to cook a yam (rather than throw out the props!), I didn't do a very good job. I'll look up a recipe next time!

It is so common to buy it here, that before i read your comment i didn't even realised i was lucky for that. There is a guy who pass in front of my house in a car every week selling ground food, and sometimes he have some huge yams roots; he sells for Kg and it cost something around 5$BRL or 2$USD the Kilogram. I feel so spoiled right now for saying this; sorry. lol xD

@pcdsgh
@pcdsgh 7 лет назад
I can't tell if there's sarcasm in your comment...
@TrueFoodTV
@TrueFoodTV 7 лет назад
We maintain a strict independent editorial policy - we don't accept money from the farms we film. This means that for our main "How Does it Grow?" series we're able to tell the story we want to tell and the way we want to tell it.
@eatingamandarin
@eatingamandarin 7 лет назад
Reno No no. Serious. I'm a commercial farmer. We produce 6million pounds of vegetable produce year round. You're videos are an excellent way of delightfully bridging the knowledge transfer void from farm to dinner plate. Your channel should be sponsored/financed by the various farmer organisations to objectify farms and crops and make it real. Most farming videos evoke sentimentalism, which is not good for the farming community actively producing food.
@eatingamandarin
@eatingamandarin 7 лет назад
How Does it Grow? Sure. And that's my point. There's a hint of distrust in your comment, which is probably more widespread in the communities mind than farmers would like to admit. Your videos are good clean unadulterated information, and I think they should be supported by genuine farmers.
@TrueFoodTV
@TrueFoodTV 7 лет назад
No, it's not distrust at all. We LOVE collaborating with the farmers we feature - we’ve cultivated some great relationships (no pun intended). And it's not a trust issue. It's that everyone, naturally, has a way they want to market themselves -- a story they want to tell. That's what we mean with maintaining our independence: we get to tell the stories we think our audience wants to hear. And since the farmers don't pay us, we're not beholden to change anything, etc. (This is a principle we practiced as independent journalists so that our route to telling the story is clean and unobstructed by any conflicts of interest.) That’s why we don’t seek money from the actual farms we cover. However we very much welcome funding conversations with farmer organizations who are happy to work with us in that way -- where we can maintain our editorial independence. As you say, we're not trying to be sentimental -- we're trying to bring agricultural literacy to a critical mass; to educate (and hopefully inspire) people about what it takes to get their food to the grocery store!
