Energy companies were once goverment owned IN EUROPE. Now they are private companies which main object is make profit.

I'm from Brazil but I live in Germany for 7 years, watching the news and talking to people from both places one can tell that there's a divide regarding Russia's and Putin's image. The US and the EU live in a bubble and assume that the rest of the world shares the same opinion. As a matter of fact, from the exploited countries' perspective to watch the US/EU lecturing morality to whatever country seems quite ridicule

it's not an energy crisis,. it's a situation created by profiteering by energy companies making record breaking profits (46 billion in 3 months) and increasing the prices because of the conflict in ukraine, governments are allowing this situation because they also reap the benefits of increased consumer pricing through taxation. The USA's Nuclear energy is completely reliant on refined uranium rods from Russia (excluded from sanctions) or china.

Had there been European leadership in dealing with Russia's security concerns, Ukraine's progress towards liberalization( socially & economically) Perhaps this war would have never started! Europe could have had secure energy supplies from both Ukraine & Russia. Ukraine would have been granted trade agreements with Europe as a non-aligned country, calming Russia security concerns on it's western flank. Instead, Europe allowed the US & British to arm, train Ukraine's military with offensive weapons & Intel on Russia troop movement before the invasion. Lack of European leadership created this cluster! Ursula jumped on the US & British bandwagon and is spewing lies about the cause of this war! Europe needs a come to Jesus moment, and put Europe first! Take the American's and British out of this mess or Europe will pay a high price for it's lack of leadership!

American banks wrecked Americans and Europeans who suffered in 2008-9 but the people responsible were Not punished for making unreasonable loans. US bailed them out and the banks kept making money but my Mom lost value on her home which her only asset. When she ran out of money I had to pay for my Mom’s care. I was glad to do that but if couldn’t help her she would have gone to a rotten nursing home. In a way the 2008-9 hurt me to. My generation.

Poverty is being exported by Europe, sure, but is also causing massive increases in the cost of living, and therefore, poverty, in Europe. It is the poor, the working class, in Europe and beyond, which is suffering from the effects of fuel and food poverty. It is private companies, the corporations, that are winning all over.

Western Europe made no mistake by getting cheap gas supplies from Russia. That made complete economic sense. The mistake it made was to join, with such enthusiasm and dedication, the all encompassing sanctions on Russia. That is not just an economic mistake, but of everything.

This war has been going on from 2014. Though there is a large population of ethnic Russians living in Ukraine, Ukrainian Government took away the status of Russian as a national language. Then Ukrainian military and paramilitary forces started low level war against ethnic Russians. The ethnic Russians formed their own states in Donbash region and asked for recognition from Russia. Russia did not recognize them and wanted a peaceful settlement. What was Europe doing then?

Yanis can't help being a politician even when he's not... "decouple from the Putin regime" is a western ideological position.

I am conflicted about Yanis. Hi had very intelligent assessment before the Ukraine conflict about the the global economy, but he lost me as an audience. Why is he blaming Russia on the war in Ukraine?

On Russian gas: Our dependence on Putin has not been the problem, but our lack of independence from the US. The US has been sanctioning Nord Stream 2 FOR YEARS, and now we are suffering the consequences of your eastward NATO expansion and your proxy war with Russia on European territory.

Sorry Yanis, but it is the "collective West" and more specifically the US/EU/NATO complex, not Putin, which are chiefly responsible for the Ukraine war and all that is emanating from this, going back many years now from even before Putin came to power in Russia.

I disagree with Yanis here. I believe Russia had no choice but to invade. Ukraine was conducting a genocide on the Eastern part of that country since 2014. The government since 2014 has been an illegimate one imposed on Ukrainians by the West. Furthermore NATO expansion to Russia's borders was primarily responsible for this war. Russia showed restraint for well over 20 years while NATO expanded. I always ask, what would the United States do if Russia wanted to create a military alliance with Canada and Mexico? Trust me, it wouldn't be pretty.

Energy companies should belong to the state, I mean to the people!! Nothing else to say. Well I have to add: this was my belief 35 years ago and still is ... actually every year that passes I am even more convinced ... The same of course refers to water (as it still is the case in many countries fortunatelly): the state, we the people have to be the owners. And than we, the people, will see, to which insustries and to what prices we will sell energy and water. Because we cannot go to the woods for wood or the the moutains for water. Ontario Hydro (electricity, we used to rely on "hydro" generation). It is natural for a societies infrastructure to be state owned. Here in Ontario Canada our water & electricity are state managed, owned, non-profit. Back in Pierre Trudeau days he started a state owned fuel company - PETRO Canada. I thought it was an interesting idea - it still exists (Suncor) but did not take hold as advertised at the time. Telephone was state owned (Bell) until recently as cell phones took over. Yellow pages too. It is somewhat surprising to me that some countries have privatized (monopoly) systems for water & electricity.

By Russian occupied territories she meant "unoccupied" territories. Ukraine attacked largely unoccupied/undefended land for optics / media blitz. Very much like a boxer ignoring his opponent and shadow boxing in a corner.

Sorry, Yanis here speaks as a politician and not as sincere member of the public. Yanis is very clever, well educated with wide views on many issues personality. He should be well informed as a person and politician and therefore should understand the nitty gritty of the situation better than the rest of population. He showed on numerous occasions ability to think independently. But he has chosen in this interview not to show what he really is able. I would be surprised if he was not able to grasp that roots of the conflict in Ukraine are not only in Russia's attempt to assert itself even not as a world but as a regional power. But conflict arouse mostly in the persistent existence of NATO which outlived its purpose for creation with the collapse of USSR. NATO was created at least on paper against USSR's presumed threat in order to deter it. There were straightforward signs shown by Russia since the USSR collapse that Russia will not tolerate expansion of NATO in its borders direction. The resistance to this expansion was expressed by every leader of Russia including late president Michael Gorbachev and his foe and successor late president Boris Yeltsin and then by current president of Russia Putin as well as his predecessor president Dmitri Medvedev. Europe population will suffer but much less than population of Ukraine which because its corrupt leadership which has not had an overwhelming support of its whole population just before this war (roughly 30% supported it at the most) was used by elite of USA to advance its claim for hegemony in unipolar world by taming Russia's state leadership ambitions for regional influence. History of Russia and Ukraine which the latter gained statehood only in just over 3 decades ago spans over millennium. Both have roots in Kievan Rus. But as a result of more than 350 years of majority of people living within either Russian empire or USSR there are many even closer bonds of population of 2 countries with large number interethnic marriages of the residents of these 2 modern countries. US elite decided to exert its influence on both on Ukraine and Russia, but in a differing way. Now the population of the whole population of Ukraine is suffering as a result of inability of the 2 countries to find peaceful solution for the life of the torn apart population of Ukraine, because of unwise decisions of the leadership of the Ukraine under the influence of the US leadership which aims to use Ukraine to "destroy" Russia in one way or another. Russia has rebelled after it gave the first clear warning that situation of NATO expansion is utterly unacceptable in 2007. It then has annexed Crimea after the US backed coupe in Kiev which led for legitimate president of Ukraine to flee in 2014. In this it has defended its historical claim for the area which was part of it since 1783 till the 1954 when Nikita Khrushchev then leader of USSR which included Ukraine decided to hand over Crimea for administrative purposes to Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic on 300 years anniversary of unification (it was unification in its true sense) of Ukrainian territories with Russian Empire. Crimea has importance in many ways to Russians. They bled a lot to defend it numerous wars. But it has strategic importance because of the superb naval base in a Back Sea which was used by Russian Empire followed by USSR to secure its southern borders from invaders. Ukraine's leadership took hostile attitude towards Russian speaking population of the Eastern Ukraine which is much closer affiliated with Russia than the rest of the country's population. Both sides taken arms in their hands and were in conflict since 2014. The rest of the world ignored the situation till the disastrous war erupted this year. But this war is between the Russia and NATO which uses Ukraine as a proxy providing manpower for the direct fight using NATO and allies supplied weapons against adversary.

Yes....and so is the water market here in the US . It was always around 90% of all apartments that had water usage included in their bill ,now it's down to only 10% - no way are apt leasers using up $55 a month in a small apt as oppose to large houses only charged $60 every 3rd month . Our water is recycled and purified over and over so their is no need for inflation cost on something that is reused !!!

Price of imported gas in Austria rose since mid 2020. From a very low level. And only bit by bit. It accelerated remarkably in the second half of 2021. Dez 21 the price was 10 times higher than in July 20. And now it’s rising even further.
