The Excelsior Brigade Fife and Drum corps performs Yankee Doodle (old into new) and Gerryowen during the 2006 Hamlin Beach State Park reenactment. Yanks pronounce this tune "Garry Owen" as if it were some guy's name. note corrected title, thanks to the commenters for their feedback.

Garryowen is a small town in Co LImerick and as has been said the song of that name was a drinking song. Immigrant Irish troopers in the 7th Cavalry were singing it, Custer liked it and adopted it as a 'Trot past' Countless westerns later it is one of those melodies that everybody knows but few know its origin or even its name. Great Vids by the way. Salutations and so long from Norfolk UK. No prizes for guessing the country of my birth.

Everyone knows the song because it was famously the 7th cavalry marching song but it was actually originally the 69th new yours marching song. And no I’m not being funny with that name it is actually the 69th New York infantry which was entirely made up of Irish immigrants living in New York City and was founded as militia in 1849 and is still used to this day by them because now they are part of the New York State militia

I'd love to be part of a reenactment of one of the many famous battles of this war. My plan would be doing it twice to be part of both contenders sides and be able to wear the blue and the gray on battleground. Greetings from Chile.

Garryowen is a great tune...I still recall a b/w film of the grand march when all parties to the dance would enter the room at the beginning of the dance, I think it was set in the times of the wars against the indians but I am not certain. Henry Fonda was in the film so ppl interested can google his name and maybe find the film title. :)

Love it! Gives me chills. I read "Yankee Doodle" was based on a much older melody, and that the occupying Brits used the now-farmiliar lyrics to insult the Patriots. Question for you: what role did fife&drum play in combat? Was it to keep cadance marching to battle? What happened once the shooting started? Did the musicians fight as well? Were they targeted by the enemy? I've always wondered if their role was ceremonial. Either way, it's just fantastic, thanks for the post.

Imma answer after 14 years only the ones that I nearly control. The role of the music on the warfare was to high the morale and to mark the compass of the march, they as far as I know weren't involved in combat but were targeted as well because of the role they had (or probably because they sounded like shit)

"The Irish were mainly in the North during the Civil War" Dead wrong. There were more Irish in the South, and they'd been there for well over a century by the time the Civil War began. Oh, you don't think Protestants are 'real' Irish? Keep that sectarian crap out of America.

@@L1Lassassin1224 - Yes, my roots are of the Scot-Irish, taken in chains from the low lands to Ireland to fight the Catholics and then in chains again to the Colonies to fight the Indians. They were the backbone of Washington's forces, saved the revolution in the battle of Kings Mountain, were the backbone of Lee's forces and today their descendants are still the backbone of the US military.

@Celtic 'King' - You know very little Irish-American history. The so-called 'Scotch-Irish' were a minority percentage of 18th Century Irish arrivals to British America (less than 40%). Half of these migrants came from the Southern provinces of the island, and most were originally Catholic. There are complicated reasons why these Catholic emigrants converted to the various Protestant denominations, having to do with processes of assimilation and the lack of RC churches outside of Maryland at this time. As a genealogist I can assure you that most of the Old Stock Irish Protestants were not of "Scottish stock".
