Yankees Offseason Blueprint: Change the Philosophy 

Benintendi and Lemahieu were huge losses in the 2nd half this season, I never understood why Boone hit Donaldson so high up in the order against righties, and why no one in the media even asked him about that or why Peraza wasn't starting when the Astros had no issue starting their young SS.

Carlos Rodon is a must... last offseason they missed ALL the big SP names, so PLEASE DON'T LET RODON GO!

I can put my reaction to this video very simply: If you were running this team, I would still be following them next year. Unfortunately, their actual blueprint is going to be drastically different and beyond stupid.

Why would people want Gleyber traded but want to hold onto IKF? Their salaries are pretty similar and Gleyber is a far better player. Some people really want Gleyber traded to free up an infield spot but then have IKF starting at 3B...thats just insane. Gleyber has more trade value but he's not going to get you a great haul either. If I'm given the option of Donaldson, IKF or Gleyber to be starting next year its easily Gleyber.

I don’t see the Yankees starting those 3 young guys at 3B, SS and 2B but I would love to see that! That would keep the payroll down to go after some big free agents for the pitching staff!

The key issue in my opinion is whether or not the Yankees are willing to go over the luxury tax. If they are not willing there will be long seasons ahead for them.

Totally agree with you. That infield could be exciting to watch. Championship outfield. Get a top-tier pitching and a new philosophy.

The philosophy starts at the top, with Hal. In turn, Cashman and Boone. Boone is not tough enough so, as much as I agree with you Derek, we’ll be here again next year saying the same thing. Don’t expect a WS win. Hope I’m wrong 😊

Excellent analysis. In 2004, a friend of mine said to me, "Give me two David Ortizes, 11 Mark Lorettas and 12 solid pitchers and I'll put that team up against any team out there." He's right. A couple of big sluggers (Judge and Stanton) and a bunch of guys who put the ball in play and get on base, plus a solid pitching staff, and you have a team that can compete with anybody.

Asking the Yankees front office (and Boone for that matter) to take accountability and admit they’re wrong, man it’s a dream I wish would become a reality. Boone is not a good manager, and you can blame him for only doing what the front office wants him to do, but that doesn’t change his loser mindset, he makes excuses for everything and never criticizes players for poor performances. He praises mediocrity. And the excuses he makes goes ahead and pours onto the players (all the excuses after the Tucker HR) there’s a lot of change that needs to be made but I’m afraid it won’t happen. At this point I think Cashman has Dirt on Hal cause he’s never losing this job 😂

Weak fielding Josh Bell over Rizzo?.... are you nuts? Pay Rizzo what he wants. With the amount of bad throws he saves he's worth it. The last thing we need is yet another bad fielding strikeout king playing first. Having said that, you make a good point about the shift going away.... it will have a large affect on batting averages.

The only other change I would make is the lineup. Need Judge and Rizzo to have some base runners before they come. No more batting 1 and 2. 1. Bader 2. Benintendi 3. Judge 4 Rizzo 5 Stanton Also need better dept at Catcher. Higgy has had plenty of chances. Time for a change there.

Cashman has a lot of work to do. 3/4 of the roster on this team needs moved. Need to get much younger and more talented. I believe in the rookies. Give them a chance.

I'm doubting you will keep Judge. I think he'll be in a Giants Uniform opening day in the Bronx.

Definitely agree with Torres being traded . Love him as a Yankees but I don’t think he’ll have another 30+ HR season . He’s got some value now. Get some bullpen arms and another utility guy/base stealer incase Locastro isn’t back next season

Love everything you said. I think the one thing I’d do is something I’ve wanted for awhile now. I think we should put out a 6 man rotation BUT have Cole go every 5 days like normal. It would keep guys like Sevy, Nestor, Montas fresh and healthy especially after Sevy and Nestor just came off the most innings they’ve pitched in a year in ages and ever in Nestors case

It drives me nuts how hesitant we are to bring up the rookies. I think if on spring training we play: 3b Cabrera SS Volpe 2b Peraza We might see incredible results. Not only that but with an outfield packed with Bennentendi, Bader, and Judge we might put fear in some teams. If the yanks manage to trade gleyber for pitchers and get Rodon from free agency... we're in for one hell of a season

I really hate saying this, but I agree with EVERY position suggestion you made (I made EXACTLY the same ones and for EXACTLY the same reasons), with the exception of the starting pitching; Rodan would be great, but they actually need TWO more solid SPs after Taillon leaves. You can NEVER have enough good starting pitchers.

I like the blueprint of this fellas wanting about and if I were the Yankees I would follow that blueprint with that that blueprint says peace

Donaldson is a 29 million dollar contract since 8 million is a buyout for 2024.I am going after a Marlins SP and revisit that Pablo Lopez trade with Torres and they need a CF which I will throw in Florial .If they could get Sandy their SP,then I would throw in Peraza.Volpe would then need to step in at SS.They have to move Higgy and and sign either Rizzo or Bell,then Benny or Nimmo.

I agree ! Didn’t the Yankees front office that the first two months of the season were successful because there was no ego . Everyone was taking their walks and slapping the ball around to keep the line moving. Then in the playoffs it seems like they were told to swing for the fences. And it doesn’t work but their analytical team says it does. Let’s not forget though we did go to the World Series in 2001&2003 and in 01 Mariano was unfortunately hit on . But this is the first time ever I’m actually thinking about stop watching if their going to continue to think like this.

Im on same page as you with all of moves. Just also would try to get a short term stop gap until Dominguez can take over as main outfielder. Personally i think conforto could be a nice option. Outfield of bennintendi, bader, conforto. Also i like the idea of getting one of the main ss on market (correa/boegarts) and keeping them at ss and moving peraza and vope to 3b and 2b

You have that little patience for Frankie montas. Let’s see how he does in a full season healthy with the yanks.

In my humble opinion; I think our starting rotation was very good last year. Cole, Cortes, Serverino, Taillon, German. I do have a radical thought that perhaps Severino could be convinced to be the regular closer. He has shut down stuff and would virtually always seal the win in the 9th. Then we should sign Carlos Rodon as we can use another lefty. Wherever you can shore up the bullpen , we should do so. I think we should also consider signing Trea Turner . Always a very consistent and productive player. And of course Judge is a must. I would shop Donaldson, Hicks and ( sacrilege) should consider shopping Giancarlo Stanton. Reason being he misses so much time every year and strikes out way too much. Resign Benetendi. See what we can get Carpenter for. Thats my plan and I'm sticking,to it.

NYY Recaps, Very good talk. I agree with all that you said!! Yankee fans want to see the players hustle and run the bases better! Keep the same lineup and do not change the position players so much! Plus Yes, Yankees are better with Judge, Rizzo and Benintendi than without them! Players like Judge and Bryce Harper do not come around everyday! Plus Yankees could afford to resign Judge we are not the Baltimore Orioles. Yes, would love to get rid of Donaldson and Hicks! Plus yankees need to stay healthy better too! Man this was a fun, fun video! Love your videos brother! I agree 💯 with your blueprint. Diaz signed with the Mets already 😔. I really, really want Yankees to sign Rodon. To me he is a chance at another elite arm, Yankees have failed to land some Aces recently, it's such a tremendous opportunity when one is available for just money ( as opposed to money and prospects ). Maybe Yankees can package Torres for another good bullpen arm, that can slide to Closer. I like Jasson Dominguez for LF in the future, but I see the need for a Benintendi right now. Nimmo might be a good, cheaper option for LF. Andrés Chaparro can come up and compete for a spot also. More importantly than the players they add, is a change in philosophy. The Yankees need new, fresh minds, a different approach to analytics, but not forgetting guts and instincts. Baseball is played by humans so emotions play a big part, numbers don't tell the whole story. Yankees need a new Manager ( not happening ). 🙏

I think NYY Recaps is spot on with your analysis. As a disappointed Phillies Fan, I think the Yankees and the Phillies have to make a lot of moves this off-season. Contact hitters are key and "swinging for the fences is the wrong approach. The Phillies showed that again this World Series (WS). I think if Boone and Cashman don't do the right movies and don't get the Yanks to the WS in the next two seasons, they need to go. The Phillies also made the mistake of signing Thomson to being the manager. In fact, a HUGE MISTAKE! Plus both teams need to learn how to play small ball; when your team isn't hitting. No matter what the era, the Phillies have never learned to play small ball. The Dodgers played small ball in the mid-60s with Koufax and Drysdale pitching. Teams should learn how to emulate that. That's how the Dodgers got there in 1963, 1965, and 1966, winning 2 of the 3 WS. Good luck to the Yankees organization with their off-season moves and Phillies Fans hope to meet you in the 2023 WS.

And you can say I was never a fan, but I disagree how I have invested much of my time and some money rooting for them the last 36 summers. Good job Derek. To do this work, you definitely took it seriously. Some of these moves are drastic, but it's exactly the type of change req'd for improvement. I actually would keep Montero, at the right price. Looked good after his IL stint.

I think the Yankees need to stop worrying so much about power hitters and build the team like they did in the 90's/early 2000s- solid hitters who had timely hits, solid pitching rotation, very good bullpen with an elite/RELIABLE closer.

I agree with most everything except 3 points. 1) I would resign Chad Green 2) I would not trade Torres yet. Gleber has the 4th highest WAR in the AL ( 8th in MLB) and I don't think Volpe will be ready till later in the year. Trade Torres next year

I'm a Yankees fan. I hate to say it, but I could easily see Judge changing uniforms. They have a recent history of picking a number and not going over it. (Cano) What if SF offers $500 million?? It's easily possible Judge doesn't come back. Prepare yourself.

I honestly feel like we should start Volpe at SS, i don’t see him as the opening day SS but we need him to be called up by late April early May and then maybe trade Peraza at the deadline. Well said, good move ideas. Yanks mentality has suffered for years. Yankee franchise has been providing 'baseball entertainment,' but not WS caliber clubs. Gotta get away from the HR or nothing mentality.

I'm a bit skeptical about being able to re-sign Rizzo if he opts out. He is due for a BIG adjustment without the shift, and it might very well price him out. That could put Carpenter out of the picture as well, but I'd explore that as well. Especially if Rizzo doesn't sign. Does 1yr/10M w/ a mutual option for another sound workable? I can't find any projections out there for him.. And I agree on the bullpen. Expensive signings drive me nuts there, as you have an entire farm system to sift through. Gotta be a few nuggets in there. I also saw they got Shreve back; do more of those reclamation minor league signings and keep churning until you hit..

Ask Paul O'Neill about lack of hustle. Torre was going to sit him once when he didn't hustle. He wasn't on the roster the next day. Torre held him accountable. Boone doesn't know how and he needs to learn

Resign Judge move him down to 3rd with your #1and 2 best on base % players in front. Bat Rizzo 4th Giancarlo 5th. Judge has been able to get those numbers inspite of hitting 2nd or sometimes leadoff.

Clarification - Gleber has the 4th highest WAR amongst 2nd baseman

The Cashman blueprint: 1-Spend lots of $$ on mediocre washed up players 2- Buy more at the trade deadline 3- Act surprised when the Astros eliminate them 4- Change nothing, stick with “ the plan”

Trevino is a good backup . Rizzo was invisible the second half with a chronic bad back . I like Volpe at Third. Rookies at 2nd and 3rd is a big gamble . Debenedetto was a disappointment . Bader is a keeper. Judge turns 31 next year and his durability playing right is a concern . Stanton , lamahieu are on the downward slope .

Bell is not a bad idea if Rizzo leaves. I like the competition of Volpe or Peraza for position, this is a no brainer to me.

Finally got around to watching The Captain, as I got the notification for this video I’m at the point in episode 6 where Jeter is talking about maybe he should have spent more time with his teammates outside of the game. It’s making me wonder how the personalities will clash next season if Judge isn’t around

The only thing that he forgot was some quality fielders. The errors cost the Yankees in the playoffs vs the Astros.

Great work on the roster move. I would say that Yanks need to expedite the minor leagues (Volpe, Peraza, Wells) into the big league in 2023. Their money will be tied up with Judge (if he signs) and if Judge walks, there will be a panic move by the Yankees front office they probably will sign some big money contract just so they don't look bad. Benintendi, Rodon are good moves and I am not sure if Rizzo is willing to sign for short term. If he wants to have 4-5 years I will say just pick up Bell. Unfortunately there is no chance Yanks will give up Hicks or Donaldson so most likely we will be stick with them both.

Gerrit Cole was the Astros number 2 when he signed for the Yankees.

If the Yankees are going to resign Judge, they won't have much money left over. So they should get a solid 3-5 starter like Chris Bassitt or like NYY recaps said, Carlos Rodon. In the infield, I feel like at least one of those three mention prospects for the Yankees will fold, so bring in a solid shortstop in Dansby Swanson. Finally, keep Judge, Bader, Stanton and Benintendi in the outfield and the Yanks should be good to go.

IMHO, Ca$hman's outlived his freshness date by about 10 years. And, I know there's a Yankees Way, but could the team show just a tiny bit of energy in the freaking dugout in '23? Always looks like outtakes from "Pinstripes Zombies." I blame the lack of energy/enthusiasm mainly on Boone, who looks like he's never missed taking his daily Zanax. I'd also love to hear a bit more constructive criticism out of his piehole next year, assuming he's still the skipper.

looks like a good team on paper but the big if is the young guys playing well, the oswalds and volpe...and of course judge resigning. If judge doesn't resign then everything goes out the window

I know fans what to hear the Yankees say what they have done has not worked, but they are a BUSINESS they will never tell fans they product doesn't work. Although I really believe the Yankees are changing, expect Peraza, Cabrera, Volpe, Rortvedt all playing full time next season and here are the position I believe and players Yankees need to sign or change. Starting with change I would love to change 3rd base, but unfortunately Donaldson still owed 25 mil and Yankees will not eat that money and if by miracle some other foolish club takes a flyer on Donaldson bring back Gio for a year or 2 would be nice. 1st base Rizzo make the most sense, but if Rizzo surprises us and leaves that would a tough position to fill. I would wish Yankees would talk with Cards they have 2 good prospects at 1st baseman who are ready for majors. Now RF sign Judge DUH!, but it's not all on Yankees there is a good chance of losing Judge, because Judge might just want to play elsewhere and if that is the case Benitendi still a good option or there is a Japanese players Sasaki who coming to majors. Yankees will also need to remove some players like Hicks got go, if IKF doesn't mind being a role player keep him if not he got to go, Gonzalez, Higgy got to go, and if it was possible I would trade Stanton and Torres for some pitching, although it would Stanton approval to trade him as he has a no trade clause. Well let see what happen this off season, it will be interesting off season.

How about changing the mentality from Buying a Championship-team, to building one ! We all know the Yankees have done sub-par with buying free agents for the most part. IM NOT SAYING, you can’t sign a FA agent or two, but the Yankees need to be very selective in this approach.Trades , the Yankees have not been that much better ( see Minnesota trade in 2021), the Yankees need to focus on trades for only good players with HEART, whose top motivation is winning ( like a Paul O’Neil type). Talk about HEART, you need to balance the clubs analytics with more heart to win. Also the club should scrub the 100 pitch count for starters and let the starters go 7-9 innings if their pitching well, and save the bullpen from burnout come August.. Finally, the Yankees need to prioritize their approach, starting with a good pitching staff, 2) speed and defense 3) good contact/ clutch hitters vs a player who hits only home runs and strikes out too much ( ex Gallo, Stanton, Donaldson etc..), and last but Not least, a great farm system as its foundation to success..

As usual Derek makes a lot of valid points but unfortunately, the Yankees are happy with their process and apparently judge the process not the result. Which makes absolutely no sense.

Quick question derek who do you want to replace judge if he leaves. For me i think trade for bryan reynolds or sign joc pederson. Also for reynolds ill give up wells, dominguez, and arias.

For me I let Judge walk unless hes willing to take a 4 yr deal sign Tre Turner trade Carlo, Josh, Torres etc.
