Consult your owner’s manual to determine the correct oil for your engine (and transmission). If it isn’t clear which oil to use - contact the manufacturer’s tech services. I would strongly advise the above rather than consulting the opinions expressed in on line forums.

Thank you for your post. Using your tutorial, I successfully changed oil and fuel filters on my own Yamar marine diesel. I was always intimidated to try, but your videos were an inspiration. Thanks again.

That’s awesome! Glad to hear it!! Did you have any difficulty bleeding the air out?

Bleeding the fuel system has always been intimidating to me. Mine is a 3GM30F and the secondary filter is in a really difficult position. You make this look really easy, especially with your electric fuel pump. I have a squeeze bulb on my fuel line before the primary filter which helps push the fuel through rather than using the tiny little pump lever on the engine. Thanks for the video.

Without an electric fuel pump it can be a lot of work. If you have clean fuel you can fill the filter housing and you’ll have less fuel to pump. My pump is simply an automobile electric pump. About $60. Thanks for watching and check out my other diesel and outboard videos!

Just purchased an oldie 30' Footer, pretty envious of your electric fuel pump! Mine has a Yanmar 2GM20F 18 HP and sadly engine does not start, was told to do this and hopefully will not have to bleed out the fuel lines. Thanks for sharing! :)
@tcsadventures

Thanks for watching! My experience has been that you’ll need to bleed it after changing the fuel filters. Recently I had the fuel tank cleaned and fuel polished. While they were at it I had them change the fuel filters. He did not bleed the air out and didn’t think he needed to. The engine was stalling at the fuel dock, but eventually seemed okay. Of course motoring back to my slip it started stalling again. I had to bleed it to get it to run right. I believe with some new engines you don’t have to bleed the air out, but my experience with my 2GM20F - you do. Good luck with your new (to you) boat!

@@tcsadventures Oh boy! I better look for additional videos, the gal who I purchased the sailboat from mentioned that she had a mechanic look at it, my old sailboat was a Universal Diesel which ran like clockwork and never got a chance to do much as I had someone who took care of it for me, however this time around I want to learn how do maintenance myself. Again your video super helpful and thanks for responding and the added tips! :)

The only difference when you don’t have an electric fuel pump on our model engine - is you use the little lever on the side of the engine (I think I noted it in the video) to pump/draw the fuel through the lines and fill the filter canisters and bleed the lines. If you fill both the primary and secondary fuel housings with clean fuel when you change the filters it will make it easier (you have to pump less fuel). I don’t do this because I have the electric fuel pump.

Never ever put an oil filter on with anything other than hand tight. This applies to auto oil filters as well

do you know the size of the big crank nut or a way of turning the engine to test if it seized? also my alternator at the bottom left do you know why that is on my snapdragon 24?

Just purchased a Bayfield 29 with a Yanmar 2GM20. Found your oil/fuel filter change video the only one that is truly 'watchable'. I am interested in what model of electric fuel pump you have installed and how you wired it in, if possible.
@tcsadventures
@tcsadventures Год назад
I appreciate the comment! It’s funny that you ask that question about the fuel pump. I’m going to replace mine and I’ll post a video on it. The only reason I’m replacing it is that it’s rusted so bad and I need to replace the board it’s bolted to. It’s a Facet electric fuel pump. I have to confirm what psi it is when I get the old one out. Thanks for watching!

@@tcsadventures Did you bypass the lift pump on the yanmar or just allow the electric pump to pump through the lift pump?
@tcsadventures
@tcsadventures Год назад
I did not install the fuel pump. It was on the boat when I bought it 22 years ago. The fuel pump hose goes directly to the fuel filter housing. If you send me an email at tcadventures2@gmail.com I’ll send you a couple of pics.

"You don't need to use a wrench" What made the filter turn at 5:40? LOL Actually I prefer high pressure grease like Superlube EP / HT over oil. The oil gets expelled from the surface in a years time. Grease will remain and it will be easier to get off. Wheel brg grease is good too.
@tcsadventures
@tcsadventures 3 года назад
Thanks for watching. That’s a good tip! I just went back and watched it and I’m not clear about what you’re referring to. I’m putting the new filter on at 5:40 and explaining that I’m only putting it on hand tight (because even just with hand tight I have trouble getting it off with the next change). It turned from my hand and not a wrench. I did not use a wrench to put it back on. At any rate, thanks for the tip and I’ll give it a try.

@@tcsadventures Just bustin you a little. Watch the video from 5:35 and keep your eye in the filter. A ghost turns it at 5:40. Thought you shut the camera and picked up a wrench LOL. Good informative video. New to marine diesels and I want to learn to winterize and service my 2GM20F. This de-mystified the filter changes a lot. Thanks.

lol! I haven’t looked at it again, but I make cuts to keep the time down, remove a grunt, expletive, etc. I was sweating like a pig when I shot that and using paper towels to get a better grip on the filter to turn it. I may have cut out a turn and getting a new towel. But trust me no wrench - there would be no way I would get it off next time! I appreciate that you are actually paying attention. Few people pay that kind of attention. Thanks for watching!

I have tried to reply to your comment on the cocktail video twice and it has not posted my reply for some reason - so I’ll try here. The sailboats and video are beautiful! Where was that taken? I need a drone so I can get shots like that! I plan to do a Yanmar impeller change video soon. I do have a couple of teak videos and an outboard video with a tip that’s helped me a lot. My Hunter is a 1991 30. I’ve had it 20 years! How long have you had your Hunter?

@@tcsadventures Ah Cherubini. An icon for sure. Videos were taken on the Toms River NJ off the Barnegat Bay. Those were the work boats here 100 years ago now restored and they race them. They are like floating pieces of fine furniture. Sailed our Hunter home Aug 28th and have had 39 "events" on board between sailing, entertaining, dining, sleepovers. There's a short video on my channel from the first race with her.

Thanks so much for your comment! Not sure if you watched the video, but at the 58 second mark I put “2GM20F” on the screen below the shot of the engine. True the title is the generic 2GM20, but for an oil change and fuel filter change it’s irrelevant. If the video was focused on the cooling system then obviously the fact that it’s also fresh water cooled would be relevant. Thanks again for your comment.

Nice video but you need to use 15w-40 oil and not SAE 30 for af marine engine like that.

Lol we’ll just have to disagree on that. I’m following the recommendation in my Yanmar owner’s manual for the climate/temperature my boat is operated in.
