Great review of the Yaqi Final Cut! Yaqi's razor offerings in the last year in stainless steel have been absolutely stellar. They are some of my best performing ( and looking ) razors, and can hold their own against some of the most premium razors out there. Also, check out their handles (like the Chippendale) , really suburb. You have lots of exploration to do! 😀 I had issues with Cremo when I first used it as well. I used the remainder of the tube as a pre-shave, where it worked better instead of its use as a main shaving cream. Also, sometime, give a Merkur 37c Slant razor a try - a superb German classic razor for a superb shave!

A very good review! Really enjoyed your take on Der Letzte Schnitt (Learning German!) I use to get a decent lather from Cremo, but I had to use so much, that I stopped using it. (the make a really nice peppermint/menthol one) Now I usually suggest it for people to try when they are getting interested in wet shaving. I love Old Spice, but I agree not a daily one for me either. Looking forward to trying PAA's Cold Spice, based on the original Shulton formula when I am back on the mainland! Cheers and have a good week

Nice Shave Heiko! Can’t beat the price for the Yaqi, I think it’s good you don’t have loctite on the razor because it allows you to break the razor down for cleaning. I believe if you ask Matt at Razor Emporium they can send you a Rex the same way without the Loctite. I’m glad Pearl is standing behind the razor and sending a new one. When I first started to wet shave I tried Cremo, wasn’t a fan of it. Proraso spoiled me😅
@Heiko-shaves
@Heiko-shaves Год назад
I agree with everything you just said. I do have loctite that is low strength. It holds things together for normal use but if you want to undo the handle it comes off without tools. I need to experiment with Cremo a bit more. I know other guys get good lathering results with it. Thanks for your comment.

@@Heiko-shaves That’s good Heiko, I didn’t realize they made a lower strength Locite, that will prevent the handle from spinning.

Yaqi's TFC seems to shave far better than it's price point warrants. It is a pretty faithful homage to the Gibbs Adjustable, which was to the best of my knowledge, the first mass produced "modern" adjustable razor brought to market (1938). Well, Gillette claimed that their early razors built for their three hole blades were "adjustable", but that was dependent upon those very thick blades acting as a spring... There was no thread lock used in the vintage Gibbs Adjustable. The ability to fully disassemble the unit in order to thoroughly clean it up periodically was a key design feature. Things were built to last then, and most customers would own just one razor. I suspect that this feature would be helpful in getting optimal useful life out of one of these zamak razors, as zamak tends to react and degrade when the chrome is breached, and zamak cannot usually be replated. I have never wanted to try a brushless cream. Once you have a brush that works for you, the thought of going brushless looks like a step backward, almost a unappealing as canned goo. Many of the OG's liked to use a simple glycerin based soap bar as a preshave. This seems to be where Matt got his inspiration for The Cube from. Of course, back in the day, most of these gentlemen would be using a simple tallow based shaving soap. Glycerin is slippery stuff, and inexpensive. Of course, we have many modern shave soaps that are so well formulated that they take the place of a preshave. This is the best of times. This is the worst of times.

Do you know what happened to the Gibbs company? You are right, the Yaqi is pretty good and goes from mild to aggressive. Pretty much a razor for every skin type. If I can get my hands on the stainless version I will give that a try. I bet it is going to be significantly different. The normal yaqi is a razor made from cast zink alloy , the stainless is CNC machines. I can almost guarantee that there is going to be a difference in geometry and feel of these two razors.

@ivermec-tin666 Год назад
@@Heiko-shaves Subie Shaves did a comparison shave on his YT channel. He has owned all 3 variations of the Yaqi Adjustable razor (zamak, brass, and stainless steel). IIRC, he has termed the SS version to be a keeper, not that the previous iterations are bad, but the SS version is better, and incorporates everything that Yaqi has learned from the previous versions. IIUC, only one batch of Yaqi Ultimate (or whatever they call them) SS razors has been sold so far. It sold out quickly to influencers and insiders. More are planned... I don't know when Gibbs ceased operations. All of the disposable razor blade manufacturers who attempted to market proprietary blades to the DE Standard were eventually steam rollered by Gillette. Enders, Durham, Gibbs, and etc... just couldn't compete against the juggernaut that Gillette became in the long run. But, the vintage Gibbs Adjustable razor is still highly regarded, even though it requires blade modification to use one. They are renowned for being smooth across the entire range of adjustment. They can be turned up to a brutally aggressive level, for those foolish enough to want that. Gibbs razors are an oddity in that French razors are generally on the medium high to high efficiency side of the spectrum. The Gibbs can be dialed down to a level that is less efficient than most experienced wet shavers want, perhaps akin to a Gillette Blue Flare Tip razor. I doubt I will ever own an actual vintage Gibbs adjustable razor. They are highly collectible and thus expensive. This is part of what drives so many modern razor makers to attempt an homage. But, I do hope to someday own a Homelike Taiga, if this stupid war ever ends.

Another great video and review, I'm really interested in how pearl fixes this razor issue. The Parker Variant has the same issue, correct me if I'm wrong, before pearl they were business partners until a falling out and both, pearl and parker have the same problem with its adjustable razors , not a new problem by the sounds of things, I'm interested in seeing what happens with this issue.
@Heiko-shaves
@Heiko-shaves Год назад
The Parker Variant is using a different way of adjusting (no spring, just tension from the blade) and I don't think it has that issue, I might be wrong. I think you are right, they used to be business partners and went their separate ways. The issues with the Flexi are the loose tolerances and the spring that is used in the adjuster. It would be such an easy fix. Stay tuned, I have something coming out about it. It is definitely not a new issue. My razor is a V12 or version 12. One would think they had enough time to figure it out by now. Thanks for commenting.

Hi Heiko i've been using my Yaqi TFC since a while and i've been wondering if you're having issues with the razor when it comes to using it with hard water, here where i live we're having some crazy hard water for god knows what reason and if a dare to forget not to unscrew the razor's top it's ending up stuck due to some kind of residue from the water and i have no idea how to stop/prevent it or at least to be able to preserve the razor. i'm usually taking the top off and leaving the water to evaporate but the issue still persists and keeps happening only issue is that instead of struggling to unscrew it i'm ending up struggling to screw it together, i've got the same version of the razor as yours(Gunmetal version) if that helps
@Heiko-shaves

Update to my Situation, I disassembled my razor down to bits and appearantly the "Handle Tube" part had it's Gunmetal Plating on the inside of the "Tube" scratched soo badly that it was down to the "Base" metal which once it comes in contact with water and dries it leaves something similar to basically rust but with a White Color. I've contacted and I'm currently waiting on a reply from Yaqi to see if they can tell me if it's possible for me to get the Gunmetal Handle re-plated by a local Blacksmith or if i should just ask for a replacement handle "tube" and I'll just send them the scrathed bad "Handle Tube" back
@nicktheneko
@nicktheneko 3 месяца назад
last update, Yaqi acted and said that "everything's looking fine" even tho i've sent them photos of the damage and that i can see the Alluminium/Zinc underneath the 'Gunmetal plating' even tho they wrote that the "Handle" is made out of brass but i can guarantee you that it isn't made out of brass because brass is to my knowledge mostly Orange-ish or Brown-ish just like bronze while the handle's metal is silver-ish like Zinc or Alluminium and to make sure to my suspicions i actually purpously scratched it additionally as a sanity check and it still had a Silvery color, i'm now wondering how to fix this issue myself i was thinking of Electro-Plating but i have no idea where the h3ll to find whatever "Gunmetal" version/composition they used and if i decided to plate the inside of the handle with another non-corrosive or non-debris leaving metal i have no idea which one to pick, if i had the money i would've went for gold plating but to do that it'll be so expensive to just buy a new razor or to re-create/copy the handle part with a different better metal

Hi any blade feel at setting 1? Because my skin is very sensitive
@Heiko-shaves
@Heiko-shaves Год назад
At setting one this razor is mild but still shaves efficiently. I just shaved with it again just to be able to answer your question. It is a smooth razor but as long as there are stubbles to engage you will for sure feel that. On my second pass on nearly smooth skin it felt very smooth and I could barely feel that there was a blade in the yaqi. With this cheap of a razor you have very low risk. Buy it try it out and if you don't like it you can pass it on to someone else who is into shaving with a DE. Go for it.
