Welcome to Sulcata Grove!
(Sorry about the shaky video and poor audio)
We moved to this property in 2012 and began transforming the barren yard into a fruit tree orchard. All of the mango trees were planted as 3 gallon, grafted mangos. The Valencia Pride has been in the ground the longest. The Cotton Candy is our most recently planted mango tree, in the ground just under a year. We grow fiberless, flavor bomb mangos :)
Alex Salazar's Mango Descriptions - tropicalacresf...
The varieties in this video are Cogshall, Pickering, Lemon Zest, Nam Doc Mai, Po Pyu Kalay (Lemon Meringue), Valencia Pride, Dot, Harvest Moon, Coconut Cream, Eldon, Peach Cobbler, Sweet Tart, Ice Cream, Fruit Punch, Cotton Candy, Beverly, Ugly Betty, Mangifera odorata (Kuini), Southern Blush, Pina Colada, Maha Chanok, and Glenn
Sulcata Grove is our 2 acre, backyard food forest. We grow over 60 varieties of bananas along with many fruit trees. We are located in beautiful Sarasota Florida.

Thank you for your very informative response. I hope we can be successful also in planting mango trees in our yard. I grew up climbing and picking fruits from mango trees and would like to have our kids experience it also. Thank you again

Great video ! I have two mango trees coconut cream and fruit punch. Planted them early this year after watching your tasting videos. I have been tipping them this year, hope to get fruit next year just a few. The trunks are small and need more time. We are south of you in Estero Fl. Not much room for trees so I need to keep them small and at the same time get some production. Keep up with your videos,lots of interesting info thanks.

Wow great mango grove. Can you enlighten me as to how long does it take for a mango tree to bear fruit after being planted? Thank you for your video post
@SulcataGrove
@SulcataGrove 5 лет назад
All of our trees were planted as 3 gallon, grafted trees. Our Coconut Cream and Harvest Moon were some of the slower ones - taking around 3-5 years to produce nice fruit. Our Lemon Meringue produced within a year of planting. Heavy mulching seems to really help in establishing the trees. We also do feed them the first year or so with a broad fertilizer like Mighty Grow and foliar feeds. Once they are established, we switch to giving the trees potassium sulfate, calcium as needed (usually dolomite), and a little epson salt while fruit is hanging (4 tablespoons just past the drip line).
@RepentanceGarden
@RepentanceGarden 6 лет назад
Lemon Meringue definitely top of the top tier but I think you might want to wait a few years for your Dot because I think it’s also another top tier mango (at least for me) 😃. Awesome update!!

Nooooo...not the mallika! I have a mallika with several fruit on it...nice and big still not sure when to pick it😅. Thanks for sharing... enjoyed all your videos.
@SulcataGrove
@SulcataGrove 6 лет назад
Ki Wi I know. It produced great and had great disease resistance, but even when they ripened really well, they were inferior to many of our favorites. We tasted a Mallika grown in Homestead and ripened properly and we still weren’t fans of it. Personally preference I guess. I know many people love Mallika mangos.

Dot is my favorite mango I have eaten so far. Rich Apricot flavor.
@SulcataGrove
@SulcataGrove 6 лет назад
We finally ignored the advice of other growers to pick the fruit before they fully ripened. We found they taste excellent when allowed to ripen on the tree. We will definitely eat them all that way next year. Still not better than some of the others (to us), but a unique, flavorful mango.
@PacoQuerak
@PacoQuerak 6 лет назад
Yes, the dot my friend had was extremely tree ripened and had very rough skin fr a mango but there was little if any internal breakdown, it had a crunchy and also juicy extremely sweet canned apricot flavor. I could see why it wouldn't be a favorite flavor for some, I personally think apricots have the best flavor at least as good as the best peaches but they are usually too bland. Dot is not bland and it has a lot of non mango flavor which I like. Also it may have a lot to do with how old the tree is and the soil it is grown in and my friend said he wants to say it is his favorite mango but he has too many years where there are no fruit, there was one this year that he shared with me, it was incredible to me!
@PacoQuerak
@PacoQuerak 6 лет назад
I have not had a lot of top tier mangoes but I focused on Mallikas this year and ate 30 or so of them and saved the seeds as I was also blown away by this mango and it is a very good yield on nice trees and the harvest can be very long season if you have several trees in different micro climates. I also tried Mallika seedling from my friend's farm that was small fruited, later than Mallika like Neelum and sweeter than Mallika with Mallika flavor. I would rate the Dot on par with the Mallika though I might rather have a pile of Mallikas than a pile of Dots, though I almost drove out to Pine island to get some more dots I forgo that excursion this year.

Coconut, Lemon, Peach, Fruit punch, Ice cream, Cotton Candy? I am a 6th generation Floridian and we were given our grafted Glenn tree from my Great Uncle who lived in Miami and grew a few of the popular South Florida varieties. I have had Kent, Haden, Valencia Pride and Glenn Mangoes and Glenn is by far my favorite. It is so creamy and delicious.. you can soft freeze it and eat it like Ice Cream... Idk, maybe I'm missing out and need to try some of these crazy hybrids...
@SulcataGrove
@SulcataGrove 6 лет назад
Shane Russell We tried one of our Glenn mangos after one of our Coconut Creams last night - huge let down. Glenn tastes great until compared to some of the new Zill’s varieties in my opinion. A lot of fruit preference is based on nostalgia though. I didn’t eat mangos until we moved here in 2012, so I don’t have any childhood favorites.

A wealth of information! Thank you. Planning on rewatching and taking notes next time. What is your current fungicide treatment for the multitude of diseases that infect these trees?
@SulcataGrove
@SulcataGrove 6 лет назад
We live within 3 miles of the bay and get a decent breeze which helps a lot. We also space our mango trees to help prevent fungal issues and do not do any interplanting. The only time we spray is during bloom. Craig uses a mild organic copper spray and an organic sulfur spray. (Alternating). He also does nutritional sprays a couple of times per year with kelp. Hope that helps.

very constantly the same issues you have we have, I will probably cut off the mangoes from the coconut cream the first few years to let the tree grow better. my ice cream has the same issues, also only the lower branches had fruit, expect for those in the second fruit set.. i thought it was due to cold nights or wind ect??

Thanks for the great video. How old is you Glenn and Lemon Merengue? I planted mine from a 3g container 1.5 yrs ago and I’m still waiting for them to really take off.
@SulcataGrove
@SulcataGrove 6 лет назад
LSanti Glenn has been in the ground for about 34- years. LM under 2 years. Mulch a large area around the tree and water well - feed a bit too. Sometimes the roots won’t spread beyond the original pot size due to lack of root spreading when planting, too much of a soil difference between what was in the pot and what was in the ground, or differences in moisture. Lemon Meringue has a reputation of sometimes being difficult to get started.

I’m thinking of plantings a carie or mahachanook mango tree. What would you say the size is of these two trees? I have a medium size yard and don’t want to grow a large tree. Also can you describe the taste of these two? Which tree grows better in south florida?
@SulcataGrove

Maha is a slower grower for us. We don’t grow Carrie. We have tasting videos on both fruits. Personally, we prefer the fruits of Lemon Meringue or Orange Sherbet and Coconut Cream. Pickering is a good tasting dwarf mango tree.

I seem to recall you commenting once way back when (?) in a video about your sheared I Peach Cobbler....ever try an Orange Essence yet ? My young tree growing well...but cut it back in early Spring...and no fruit yet. What was the root treatment you used on your Pina Colada Mango ? Great video's as always !!
@SulcataGrove
@SulcataGrove 6 лет назад
Thanks Jeff ! Jeff Yes, the Peach Cobbler was damaged badly a while back when a eucalyptus fell on it. Haven’t tried Orange Essence yet. Hope to try one this year if we can find some fruit to buy. Craig In arched grafted a mango seedling into the Pina Colada tree to help push its growth. The real growth came when we heavily mulched the mangos on that side of our property.
@jeff6899
@jeff6899 6 лет назад
FYi, somewhat surprising, In our Dry climate, we are seeing a huge outbreak of anthracnose & bacterial black spot. It has stunted many of my mango trees... Many believe it originated in Florida nursery tree stock which had the initial signs...
@SulcataGrove
@SulcataGrove 6 лет назад
Jeff Oh no! I heard big trucks were coming and buying up trees from Zill’s to take to AZ. The bacterial disease has be wondering if we should plant the most recent mango tree we purchased (originally from the east coast of Fl where they are dealing with this). I don’t think we have it at our property yet.
@andres3614152
@andres3614152 6 лет назад
How to treat Antracnose?
@SulcataGrove
@SulcataGrove 6 лет назад
Copper or Sulfur sprays are commonly used. Airflow is helpful, so leaving enough room between trees when planting helps with that. This year, we had some issues because of the large amounts of mulch we had near a few of the trees.

Thank you sir for sharing your wonderful mango collection. Nicely done. Question: Do you have the frost problem? I see that Sarasota is climate zone 9B which is 25-30F. Your trees are obviously growing great. I am in California 9B zone as well but mango doesn't survive here. I have tried. I am planing to move to Florida and trying to determine which area should I move to. Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties are obviously zone 10. I have been to Homestead area but didn't like the rocky soil. How is the soil in your area? If Sarasota can have such a good healthy mangoes then I am guessing Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Napes would be fine too. Any recommendation? Growing mangoes and other tropical fruits is the primary factor. Cost, real estate price is the second. Thank you!
@SulcataGrove
@SulcataGrove 5 лет назад
We haven’t had any problems with frost damage on mangos. We are about 3 miles from the bay. The closer to the coast the better. Things get cold quickly the closer one lives to the middle of the state. If you need help finding a place, we recommend Celeste’s dad - www.mikesellssarasota.com - he’s found some great places for others making the move to this area and is happy to email /call back about price differences in different areas. Our soil is beach sand but has quickly become good soil with lots of free oak mulch.
