Wow that’s the first time I’d ever seen such early footage of Jimmy playing. Amazing stuff. Just watching this excellent documentary gives me even more respect for the Yardbirds, one of the absolute greatest blues bands of all time. No wonder Zeppelin became so masterful at doing blues covers. And not many bands had ever succeeded in launching ‘ 3 ‘ legendary players like the Yardbirds did.

Very good doc. Though I felt that the music sounded soulless and empty from using only Robert Plant’s vocals alone - the guitars, drums and bass were completely erased during all the Zep songs. Perhaps it needed to be done for copyright reasons or something in order to keep the video from being taken down. Other than that, I thought this was nicely pieced together and made into a single video. Well done. 👍

So many rock bands, especially from the US, wanted to be Zeppelin. The problem was that they did not understand Zeppelin. Zeppelin was far more diverse and deep and intelligent in their music then most of the copy cat bands that followed. With alot of Zeppelin's music being inspired by Tolkin, English myth and mystical folklore, Far off places, the shallow stuff that the wannabes could not measure up. They thought it was all about groupies and being on the road and wrote of little else. Their songs were pretty run of the mill. Zeppelin brought a brilliance that 4 men who were the best musicians in their class. When Jimmy Page put together this band to fulfill some Yardbird commitments he knew he was getting a crisp, experienced and very very good musician in JPJ. But, taking on two unknowns from the sticks in middle England, he really could not know how those two would be in a band and as things progressed. Afterall Plant was about a month away from giving up the dream and settling down to everyday drudgery to bring in a paycheck for himself and Maureen. But, Jimmy ended picking these incredible musicians as well.

Sonny Boy Williamson was great; this SBW is actually Rice Miller, who assumed the name of the top-class harmonica player.

I don't know much about the original SBW. I heard that SBW 2 -- the one who made an album with Yardbirds -- was an even better musician than the first one.

I admit, first time I heard Zep 3 I was not immediately in love with it - NOW, it's one of my favorites of their catalogue. "Immigrant Song" is beyond power....but ALL of the acoustic material is INCREDIBLE. "Presence" is a masterpiece.

I totally agree, Presence is an overlooked classic full of just amazing material that shows Zep could do it all.Achilles Last Stand is one of my favorite songs ever. Just the powerful mood it creates is not to be rivaled.

@@Trobtwillis you got it, my man! I recall an MTV or VH1 Led Zep documentary from the 1990s narrated by Tyler. I'll never forget because he always over-pronounced the syllables whenever saying "Led Zep-Pah-Lin"

32 minutes in they claim Peter Grant had the Yardbirds sign over their band name to Jimmy Page. Wrong! The Yardbirds had ten gigs on tap in Scandinavia. They kept the name to play those dates and would legally have been able to if they kept Chris Dreja in the band. But they left Dreja behind and did the tour under the Yardbirds name. Dreja's barrister served Page and with a cease and desist order when the band returned to England. The band and Peter Grant met with Dreja and made peace. It was their fault only in that they hadn't brought Dreja on tour as rhythm guitar for those ten gigs since John Paul Jones was going to play bass. The lawyers were left out of it and the band kickstarted Dreja's career as band photographer by hiring him to do their first publicity shots.

wow. That was a really well put together documentary. It was very good and I really enjoyed the video. I am a long time Zeppelin fan. Since I was a teen in the mid 70s. And I know about artists and rock history but, the Yardbirds/Zeppelin connection I never knew about until recently. So, I've been focusing on that era of the groups.. The morphing. So, coming across this video was just perfect.

I've said it before & I'll say it again, that is not Sonny Boy Williamson, that is a musician born Aleck Miller, who stole his identity back in the 30's. The real Sonny Boy Williamson, who wrote the classic " good morning little schoolgirl", was murdered in Chicago in the mid-40s. After the real Sonny Boy died, Aleck Miller kept the lie going, and to this day there's a whole generation of English musicians who think they jammed with Sonny Boy Williamson. Learned all this from the Smithsonian blues collection, which has both of them, best blues anthology ever. There are many websites on Google that will confirm this information. Aleck Miller was a good bluesman, but he's not and will never be Sonny Boy Williamson, and if I ruined your 60s illusion, that's too bad. The truth can be unpleasant, but it has to be told, or.else the big lie becomes the whole truth in its absence....

I understand that at the time that Jimmy and Keith Moon were talking about forming a band that Jimmy had been threatened that were he to do that that his fingers would be broken, so he thought better about the idea. Albeit I think that the line up would have been an awesome band, but hey... Broken fingers ? I like my fingers on my fret boards just fine as they are too 😁
