The complete story of how The New Yardbirds came to be. Our journey begins in Germany and moves along turbulent times in Europe. From civilians watching up to the skies to audiences enjoying coffee machines, dance halls and the emerging rock and roll scene, five men chased their dreams and the end game was LED ZEPPELIN. Let's take a look at a project decades in the making with characters and key players connecting the dots of the story of one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. #ledzeppelin #jimmypage #johnpauljones #robertplant #johnbonham

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Wow, this was seriously, seriously good and your hard work was definitely worth it. I don't know whatever happened to the 'Becoming Led Zeppelin ' official documentary but Jimmy need look no further than this masterpiece you've put together. It had EVERYTHING us Zep fans could wish for - and much more . A truly deep dive into every aspect. Loved the back stories of Peter Grant growing up, the timeline of Page's session work, the pictures of Jimmy's parents, Plant's dad, even pics of John Paul Jones's college. With the back story of the (real) Zeppelin family thrown in, this documentary gave us everything. ( Where did you get the demo of their first jam???). You really surpassed yourself (again) with your latest work. ..Thank you so much...

Very well done. And a great concept. Showing the proximity of the various venues in Soho was also clever - it was a small world in those days, with Soho being the London epicentre. Indeed, the Yardbirds first album was recorded at the Marquee on the first night of opening its new location at 90 Wardour Street. The triple header bill started with them, then Long John Baldry, and Sonny Boy Williamson. Just a few minor things to add: - In the photo of Mike Leander, that is Marianne Faithfull next to him. - In the band pictured in from on the Flamingo, that is Zoot Money's Big Roll Band, which included Andy Summers (later of the Police) and Colin Allen (later w/John Mayall, Stone the Crows, and Focus). It was a gig at the Flamingo where Zoot Money's band and the Yardbirds shared the bill that Eric Clapton first saw a Les Paul in person. Summers had purchased it for £80 at a music shop a few minutes' walk away and suggested Clapton get the other one the shop had. He did and used it during his time with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. After it was stolen during Cream rehearsals, Summers, who decided he wanted a single coil pick-up sound (i.e., Fender) sold his Les Paul to Clapton for triple what he had paid for it. It too would get stolen, which led to Clapton using his famed painted Gibson SG, 'The Fool'. - For Jet Harris & Tony Meehan there is a photo of the Shadows, their former band. - Worth noting that John McLaughlin was on the New Vaudeville Band's 'Winchester Cathedral' as a session player. Apparently that session prompted him to give up studio work and pursue a more fulfilling career. - 'How Many More Times' is, as you note, based on Page's riff from 'Smokestack Lightning' (a tune that appeared also on 'Five Live Yardbirds'), but the vocal roots of the tune come from Howlin' Wolf's 'How Many More Years'. Robert Plant wasn't shy on 'borrowing' the lyrics of others (and assuming credit), the most notorious examples being 'The Lemon Song' (orig. Howlin' Wolf's 'Killing Floor') and 'Whole Lotta Love' (from Willie Dixon's 'You Need Love' made popular by Muddy Waters, though Plant's rip was from the Small Faces' 'You Need Lovin'', for which they had assumed credit, though that would have been manager Don Arden doing that as a means to increase royalties...which he was seemingly keeping for himself). - 'You'd Better Run' as sung by Robert Plant was originally a tune by New York band the Rascals, and 'For What It's Worth' was by Buffalo Springfield, which included Neil Young and Stephen Stills. - Clem Cattini's name is prononunce 'Ca-teen-ee'. He is of Italian decent. - Chris Dreja's name is pronounced 'Drey-ya'. - The Donovan album title is pronounced 'Ba-ra-ba-ja-gle'... Barabajagle. You pretty much nailed it. And the title tune and 'Trudi' feature Donovan with the Jeff Beck Group. Once again, great job. The Yardbirds were a pivotal band, particularly during the Jeff Beck era and the singles 'Heart Full of Soul', 'Evil Hearted You', 'Shapes of Things', 'Over Under Sideways Down' and 'Happenings 10 Years Time Ago'. Though they broke with the stricter blues convention of their Clapton days, the band was still a blues band at heart. But they also pioneered psych, garage band, raga rock (Paul McCartney's guitar solo on the Beatles' 'Taxman' is him making raga-like riffing like his friend Jeff Beck) etc. But when Beck was fired and then the band's contract sold to Mickie Most and Peter Grant, things went downhill due to Most's disregard for the band's brand and legacy. Also worth noting that the departure of Paul Samwell-Smith, which enabled Page to join, saw the band lose its musical director/producer as well as a great bassist. In essence, that was the start of the downfall of the band. 'Happenings 10 Years Time Ago' suggested great things post-Samwell-Smith, but its B-side, 'Psycho Daisies', despite being a cool track with Beck singing, did not. Instead of Most, it likely would have been best if the band produced themselves with Page in the director's role. Page produced the excellent 'Beck's Bolero' (surely the first 'heavy' rock riff recording) and apparently played a major role in 'Happenings....' Worth noting that with Led Zeppelin he insisted Most NOT be the producer. Instead he brought in the great Glyn Johns to engineer and co-produce the band's debut album...which sounded fantastic. Unfortunately, according to Johns (listen to his 2-part interview on RU-vid), Page then refused to give him the co-producer credit, so he (Johns) vowed to never work with them again, though his brother, Andy, did. Too bad, because while the band fared well without Glyn, it is very possible his participation on the second album could have avoided the likes of 'The Lemon Song', one of those cringeworthy numbers that reinforce Plant's disdain and keep him away from the idea of a Zep reunion. Once again, great video. Thank you.

I used to go park on dirt roads or in the woods and roll one and drink beer listening to Led Zeppelin. In 1979/80 I slept every night with headphones on listening to In Through The Out Door over and over on 8-track tape. It was the most magical music I had ever heard and I was drawn to the drums on that album. By 1982 I had drums with the exact matching set of Paste cymbals and snare drum Bonham used. Lost that amazing kit after our band played at a bar Friday/Saturday and decided to play Wednesday too and left our equipment. It burned that night. My favorite part of the album are the slow breakdowns in Caroselambra and the sounds of Jimmy Page`s guitar and I`m Gonna Crawl. Achiles Last Stand freaks me out too. I loved Robert Plant`s Big Log when that came out too. Mind blower! Burned into my soul.

It's absolutely AMAZING how many famous songs of the 60's Page played guitar on along with John Paul also playing on a multitude of other sessions. Talk about an INCREDIBLE education in music and music production! It's no wonder Zeppelin was so good....they had two "session-hardened" musicians...talk about having a double "edge". Most folks never knew this. JCM - thank you for providing the sessions list of Page....I had never seen those lists before. I have a "Screaming Lord Sutch" greatest hits...it's pretty entertaining. Prior to the Plant compilation "66 to Timbuktu" (or something like that), getting those early 45's of Plant are VERY difficult. Fortunately, years ago there was a boot where someone compiled just about all of them. A lot are on "Timbuktu"...but not ALL of them. I also CANNOT recommend enough to get a boot with the "Band of Joy" material. Plant wails and it's great material! But lastly - a MUST TO OWN is the release called "Yardbird's Live '68"....it really shows just how powerful the Yardbirds could have been and it shows the path the Page was heading towards......it was out of those "ashes" of the Yardbirds though that rose the great Phoenix of the band we all know and love.

Superb description of the birth of a super group Jose. The music scene in the UK was pretty small in the sixties. Managed by very few, everybody new everyone. Before guitarists tried to hide their playing styles they would openly share their methods. Even teaching each other. Jimmy learned DADGAG from Davy Graham, through Bert Jansch. The London folk scene heavily influenced Jimmy, John Renbourne, Ralph McTell, Paul Simon,Al Stewart, John Martyn and Roy Harper all stealing from each other. Best documentary on Zeppelin beginnings bar none Jose. Well done!

Jose, I apologize in advance for my lengthy response but I can’t help it my friend. This film was a great way to preside over multiple cups of morning coffee. You’ve filled in SO MANY gaps in my existing knowledge on the infancy of LZ. Your research was very thorough and welcoming. To me, it was the Beck’s Bolero session that really planted the seeds (which would bear only forbidden fruit) in Jimmy’s mind. This is where he knew he needed to form an untouchable supergroup that would cast a tall shadow. A little insight on Big Jim Sullivan: all that one would need to do, is wiki his discog to be utterly amazed. I HIGHLY recommend to you and all reading this to search out the James Last version of the John Miles 1976 composition simply named “Music.” Big Jim is here and toured with this act for a number of years and is certainly worthy of your attention. You’ll wish the volume on your device could go louder when watching, especially the lead trumpet outro. Good God Almighty it’s the most beautiful thing you’re likely to ever hear, trust me. Benny Benndorff bass, Derek Watkins lead trumpet and Terry Jenkins drums are sure to please as well. About the sports theme music w Michael Jordan. Beautiful song. It reminds of the bumper theme songs from the This Week In Baseball tv program in the 70’s and 80’s. Mike Vickers from Manfred Mann wrote the opener, Jet Set and John Scott (noted British composer) wrote the ending called Gathering Crowds. As a ten year old, the sawing away of the violins blended w the French horn arrangements sent chills down my back. It did something to me. Check these two out - and the James Last version of Music and Star Wars theme. Big Jim is in both of these. Thank you once again Jose. You outdid yourself here with this film.

Hey L.B, i agree with you on Beck's Bolero setting Zepp's bolero for sure. Jeff paved the way for Jimmy in many ways, even Page has to acknowledge this but we know the media WON'T. Big Jim's discography is ridiculous yes hehe A LOT of stuff. I will check James Last' version of the 1977 classic MUSIC, great song indeed. I am grateful for your support, editing this big episode was tricky hehe. Have a great week and stay tuned for May!
