I love that Anna cares about the overall health of the nail, not just new polish swatches. I’ve been polishing my nails since 15 and always had very dry nails and my skin around the nails because I never knew about cuticle oil. I would always just bite or peel back my hang nails and now at 35 I regret ever doing that, the shape of my nails are not the same. Adding oil to my nail care routine has helped so much so that I don’t chew off my dry skin as much (old habits are hard to kick). Thanks Anna for all you tips!
Anna, I would love a video on how to find a nail technician who is knowledgeable and actually cares about helping clients achieve healthy nails. I feel like every time I go to a salon (which is not often) the technicians are careless and rough. Thanks for another great video! I learn something new every time.
I love these videos! This woman has nails I’d slightly maim someone for. So perfect. I am so envious of the arc from PNF to tip. I totally agree with you, Anna, about the patch. I’ve tried a tea bag and glue patch and it damaged my nail. It also made my free edge very ridged. If someone insists on patching, which I can understand, I recommend a tea bag and base coat. You’ll have to do a new one with every manicure and base coat isn’t as strong as using glue. Base coat doesn’t damage the nail nearly as much, if at all, as the glue. I never experienced damage using base coat and tea bag. However, i have had the nail break despite have the tea bag and base coat on. The advantage of using base coat instead of glue is you can slide it into place. It’s 1 coat of base, put the tea bag on and let dry. Put another coat of base on and let dry. This is when you do have to do a little bit of buffing if you don’t want a lump where the patch is. So you have to be very careful to not buff the natural nail. Then you put another layer of base coat. You probably would want to use a ridge filling base coat at this point because it hides the patch better. Then you let that dry and go on with your mani. When removing your mani, don’t pull or peel off the tea bag. If it is still adhered to your nail, you could try leaving it there and going on with your mani. I recommend soaking it in acetone until it comes off and then doing another one. This one person posted an interesting video where she patched nails that broke on the free edge by using multiple layers of glue on the underside. It’s easier and much better for your nail to just bite the bullet and trim the nail. Good news, is this one is a thumb nail and easy to hide. 😂 The Yellow Stopper base coat is used as a peel off base coat by some people. I think I’ve commented that before. It isn’t meant to be a peel off, but is for some. Thank you for this video!
Never, ever boring Anna.... incredibly informative in an easy to understand way 😍 It's true about red/dark pink polishes staining... I used a China Glaze one, forget which now, and that made made whole nail plate pink.... it's all but grown out now and the fresh nail is all good.

Your explanation of doing a patch is spot on and you broke the science of it down so everyone could understand what you were talking about. When I’m explaining this to my clients their eyes go glassy like a deer caught in headlights. But by educating my clients it has kept them in my chair for over 30 years. Keep these videos up. 👍🏼

Absolutely love this series so helpful. I always wear a base coat hate yellow nails on me. I did test out Ella Mila spotless 3 weeks worked so well removing stains.

My toenails were like this. Not as long as this, but I still felt a million times better when I trimmed them. I’m working on going polish free so I get get them back to a normal/ white color. So sick of the yellowing!

So if its the nitrocellulose that causes the staining, a clear nitrocellulose containing polish (without any lakes or dye) would also stain the nail? That would be a nice experiment!

At this time my nails on the left hand are stained and those on the right hand are not. The difference was the polish remover. I started on the left and because the shitty remover (an essence jelly aceton-based) didn't work I switched to another aceton-based product, a liquid one. The removal was much quicker. Now I have the theory, that length of the removal process is at least partially to be considered a factor. What do you think?
In my experience all polishes stain the nails to an extend but some make the nails quite yellow. I used an orange nail polish for a design once and my nails got super drastically orange/yellow after only one wear. If my nails get super yellow I know that I should switch the polish
Can’t get over the link where the loreal nail polish made your nails look like that… am back using regular polish in lieu of gel polish , using orly nail strengthening base , but nails are looking to have a tinge of yellow . Cud it be the base coat as I am using a variety of brands of polish every 5/6 days when I change (mavala/Sally hansen/Essie/opi) . Cud the base coat be the culprit or so the polish soak through the base coat and be anyone’s guess as to what’s causing it ??? Thanks Anna for all your advice . I’m 2 months into my natural nail care and following all your advice , major noticeable difference in my nails this week I’m starting to get tips passed the free edge and polish looking better and lasting better on them. Loving the improvement and will send you before and after pics in time when I feel they look ‘great’ 🙈

So, I understand that Doug Schoon seems to believe that pigments and dyes are what's causing staining and over the years that lower concentrations of higher quality substances will not stain. It does seem interesting that DD polishes will prevent this, as well as what you've mentioned seeing results with DD pedicures. Considering that most stains are surface-level though makes me wonder if it couldn't be a result of both nitrocellose and pigments and dyes? Or maybe even something else we're not considering? Just wondering out loud here since nail bloggers have been testing out stain preventers in base coats with some success as well as stain removers.

Hello there! As a clear coat nitrocellulose free you can use Essence Active Whitener. There are no nitrocellulose free polishes on the market other than DD that I know of
Me too. I know I shouldn't, and I think it creates hard, dead skin around my side walls, but I'm too impatient to let it all grow out and see if I can find a better way 😭
