I have said this all along. The Indians prediction of 7 generations they would take it back...Tate would be the one that this will affect. I believe, since he is half Indian, that he will inherit the land and so the Indians will have it back through Tate!! Conclusion...this is a fabulous series...love it!

I had the same feeling about this. Duttons seem to truly want to keep the land as is and make as much peace with the native Americans as possible. The younger generations are making it harder. If it ends that way, it will remain in both…. The Dutton Family and back to the natives. ♥️

So I think “Native Americans” is a misnomer if you try to just apply it to the tribes and confederations which were present here during European expansion. My great grandfather was born in 1898, he lived to be almost 99 years old. I never realized how amazing it is that I grew up getting to spend time with this wonderful man who technically lived in the 1800’s. I realized how unusual it is to say you knew someone from the 1800’s after talking to my kids about him and they were shocked cause you know I’m from the 1900’s and that’s old lol. My great grandfather would talk about a farm in Queens NY they would go to and riding a horse and buggy down the city street with his family. He was fascinated by computers and told me that was the future and to make sure I study them computers lol. He smoked a cigar every day and still lived to be almost 100
I was born & raised in Osage county OK. I’m 68. I remember my grandmother told me stories about coming to OK in a covered wagon. I was only around 6, so I can’t remember them very well. I so wish I could remember! She married my grandfather somewhere in southwestern OK. Found out about 14 years ago (through genealogy) that my 5th great grandfather on his side was a famous Cherokee chief. But more info is very limited.
One of my grandfathers was born in 1883.. the other in 1889.. I didn't know the 1st. However, the 2nd lived to be 92.. I had him for 18 yrs of my life..

Kevin Costners dad was born in 1910 and died in 2000. There is literally a family tree you can search for and it will show you the lineage between McGraw and Costner. It is just kinda odd because John was born in 1955 so his father had him at 45. Kind of an older age. I think you have an extra dutton in there. Who knows though I guess🤷♂️

I was thinking that there’s no way that current John is 6th or 7th gen. Just 2 or 3 generations of a family can last a hundred years. The show seems to have accelerated it a bit.

I just finished watching ALL four seasons. Excellent…….it kept me pulled into the story. I do not usually follow series shows like this…..however…..the storylines, plots and characters DO NOT disappoint. All the characters side stories and how they all play an integral part to creating …for sure…..one of ……..if not the best family drama sagas I have watched in a veeeeeeeeery long time! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾😊
Taylor is an amazing writer. It’s either we fans are reading too much into it, or in 7 generations it will be a bloody ending for the Duttons. But that’s the beauty of this show

Just finished 1883 😭😭😭 and just started Yellowstone season 1 episode 1😭😭 I knew it was a lot of generations between James and kevin! But thanks to you I understand how they are related. When the native Americans told him in 7 generations they would take their land back I knew that what was happening now in Yellowstone. So glad I was able to watch 1883 1st! What got me and made me bawl again, was when John (kevin Costner) sat with his son I front of a tree right next to where the tree is that elsa was buried and the bird came. That killed me😭😭😭 I am hooked
Spoilers for 1883 I got confused when they kept talking about going to Oregon. It was very interesting how they got the family to Montana. Very good show imho.
It’s interesting to flip from watching “1883” to “Gilded Age”, as they were happening at the same time, in the same country and yet worlds away from one another in terms of culture and the realities of life.
James Dutton has to be at least 40. More likely 50. He was a Captain in the Confederate Army during the civil war which ended in 1865, 18 years prior to the shows timeline.
The storyline math for Margaret's age is 35. Actors can pretend to be any age they want, but 35 is a huge stretch of believability for 54 year old Faith & Tim. For sake of story and great acting, have to let it go, Further complicated when James and Margaret haven't aged in the 1893 fashback. I need to accept it like "The Simpsons" that never age I guess. The production design and make up is so good, I guess I want the age accuracy to be good as well. Definitely a good point about James needing to be 40 or 50.

Keep in mind the Homestead act allowed claims to be staked on adjacent parcels for children when they reached adulthood. This encouraged having children early so the overall ranch could grow really big. Common tactic used.

McGraws character, James was the 1st generation. Casey is not even a Dutton by blood...he is adopted (Duttons are not branded, this is reserved for people brought into the family ) therefore Tate is not Dutton....and there goes the 7 generations prophecy. Also, there is no way an Indian Chief could predict exact generations...this is a huge stretch in believable storytelling. Beth is the only surviving blood related Dutton in the series other than costumers character .

Taylor, you are incredible. I couldn’t even count how many times I have watched 1883. It really touched my soul. If you need a new Native actor for 1932, check out Zahn McClarnon. Yeah, I don’t understand why shows do not use actual native Americans to portray Native Americans on television. It’s so offensive. Som of my favourite shows are culprits.

I am late to the party and the Dutton franchise, but I whole heartedly agree with 1883 is soulfully touching. Just finished the series tonight and not sure if I should watch 1932 or Yellowstone next. So many scenes were impeccably done. I knew "Elsa" as "Veronica" on T.V.'s Young Sheldon. The best series I have watched in years and so happy there is more story line out there.
I do believe the Indians rise up and claim back their land, I believe Yellowstone Dutton’s end up in Texas at the 4 6’s ranch since John Dutton invested Million dollars in prime horses, quite an investment and the best trainers for these horses. I am enamored with Taylor Sheridan’s storytelling, the stories have transformed television series. They are fresh, original, so detailed and enjoyable. I love creative mind, appreciate Taylor’s sharing his talents in Yellowstone, 1883, can hardly wait for 1932 and 6666 Ranch…going to be a great ride! Cowboy up!
very admirable that John Dutton anticipated losing his ranch in Montana to the Indians and having bought a ranch in Texas. The only sad thing about this is leaving the family cemetery there.

This is my third time watching this video. I learn something new every time. I TOTALLY missed the part about Tate. Who is half Crow and the 7th generation of the Dutton clan. Graham Greene's statement makes sense now. I was just so glad to see the Taylor Sheridan had him in the show that I ignored his lines.
Tate becomes the heir of the Dutton Ranch and to secure the land, protecting it from development, he strikes a deal with the Broken Rock Indians. I believe he will likely sign away 3 to 400,000 acres to broken rock only keeping a small portion 100,000 acres or so for continued usage. The tribe will likely lease that land back to the Dutton’s at a minimal cost under the agreement that they will always work together to protect the land.

Did you forget that TS stated that he misspoke and used too many "greats"? James is only Costner's Great Great Grandfather. So, it's James, John Sr, John Jr, John III, Kayce, and Tate. It will be Tate's kids who take back the land.
I did some Maths, and wrote it down to prove it, on the lineage. There is a possibility that there is a missing generation that would make James his great great grandfather.

So maybe Spencer had a kid and named him John after his older brother who may have died. Then the lineage would work out to where James would be Costner's great great grandfather.
There is a possiblilty Sheridan just got it wrong in an interview. It would make a lot more since for Tate to fulfill the prophesy as the 7th genertion, not the 8th.
yes it's possible. It also depends on when that interview was done as TS wrote most of Y years before he started writing 1883. regardless it's his creation so in the end he's going to write it the way he wants to write. Us fans are just having fun passing time and guessing until we get new episodes.
It doesn't matter how old James Dutton is suppose to be. the little boy John Dutton is 4 or 5 years old in 1883 and we know that Costner character is about 65-66 in season 4 so mathematically James would be his great grandfather or possibly his great great grandfather. Yellowstone is the tragic kingdom with cowboy boots. Where the natives can no longer afford to live in the place where they are from. Just like us native Californians. Kevin & I lived in the same neighborhood down the street from Disneyland. Should have bought a bungalow on Balboa Island in the 60's. They are priceless today.
Tim McGraw said in an interview that he was great great grandfather, which would make sense. My grandfather was born in 1892 and my mother was born in 1932. I am 68 yrs old....I can't understand 3x great grandfather...lol
I agree. I penned the biography of a man who was born in 1887. He still has a living daughter-in-law. I don't believe this is back far enough for James to be anything other than Costner's great grandfather.
I feel like fans are taking that whole "7 generations rise up" thing a little too far. There are two things I have yet to see addressed in the breakdown of that line: first and foremost is technically we are sitting at 8 generations of dutton if we include Tate. Frankly I feel like Sheridan is setting that up to mean Tate will inevitably inherit the land once belonging to his ancestors and thus fulfill that prophecy. Secondly, I feel as though the whole point of Elsa falling in love with Sam was to show the connection that tribe and the family share going all the way back to the beginning of the families journey to that land. Elsas spirit resides with that place as does rhe entire Dutton family, Sheridan understands the sacred traditions of the native culture, I don't think he would go as far as to just not have the characters recognize the spots importance. Tying everything back to Tate and him being the bridge between the two worlds Elsa and Sam never got to see.

Then his grandpa and dad. 2 more generations there. That's 5. Now count costner and kayce. That's 7. They will lose the farm from kayce to tate. Which puts it back into the Indians hands.

The math doesn’t add up. The only way James is the great, great, great grandfather of John Dutton is if we’re talking about Kasey’s infant son named John Dutton. Otherwise, Taylor either misspoke or he’s intentionally misleading us (which I have no problem with, for the record).
A generation is considered 20 years. Seven generations from 1883 is 140 years which takes you to 2023. That being said, my grandparents came to Oklahoma at the turn of the 20th century. My father was born in 1925. I was born in 1957. My son was born in 1993. That’s 4 generations in 120 years. It’s all how you interpret generations.

I have memories of my grandmother telling me stories about coming to Oklahoma in a covered wagon. I was only 6 at the time so don’t remember details but I so wish I could! I don’t know if she was a child or grown. But she eventually married my grandfather who is part Cherokee in south western Oklahoma. One of my aunts said she could remember my great grandmother being Cherokee also. (My mom was the youngest & didn’t really remember her grandparents). Somehow they eventually migrated to Hominy OK, (Osage county)where I was born. I now live inTulsa & am 68 years old.

I picked what I still believe will be the final outcome to Yellowstone from the first scene that Dutton (ie. the Costner character) shares onscreen with Chief Rainwater: when the Chief says that his ambition is buy back the whole Yellowstone valley and add it to the reserve lands. He talks about X billions (I cant recall the exact figure) and about 30 years. To me it has been obvious to me since then what the end game will be: beset by developers on one side, eminent domain pressure from government, with the feds actually paying ranchers to not produce cattle over a certain quota, with Beth showing no interest in taking over, Jamie effectively cast out from the family and with Casey showing more interest in pursuing his own families destiny via the tribe: John Dutton will sell about 75% of the whole of the Dutton Yellowstone ranch to the tribe, who will incorporate it into the federal reservation and thus save the land from the rapacious reach of developers and government. I suspect that part of the deal would involve Dutton keeping the ‘home range’ (at least until he passes) and the tribe leasing the pastoral lands to John’s company, so that all of the hands have a job for the foreseeable future (perhaps in return for Dutton hiring a dozen or so Indians to teach them the business so it becomes a going concern once John passes and the tribe take complete control). This would be a win for literally everybody.
McGraws character would have to be at least the great grandfather (more likely great great grandfather) to Costners character. I am currently 61 and knew 3 of my great grandparents who were born in the 1880's - 1890's.
Just a history fact that’s kinda cool John Tyler the 10th president has a grandson alive today. I’m pretty sure he was born around 1790 had a few wives and got them pregnant when he was in his 70s.

In John Dutton's run for Governor speach he said "My Great Grandfather is buried on my land." James is the first Dutton that will die on that land. James is his Great Grandfather.
Hard to say that by alone would be James. He mightve died elsewhere while traveling for supplies or perished never to be found. And while James was the original settler it doesnt necessarily mean he was the most celebrated in getting the ranch operating, as he was already in his 40s, not much years left all things considered, to children growing up there.. Seems more fitting the 2nd generation would be the pivotal link for keeping the operation going through a radically fast changing America.

The way current John Dutton will not lose the ranch to the big development companies and keep his word to his Father of never selling one square inch, is the fact that 8th Generation Tate Dutton is half indian. John will deed or will the entire Yellowstone to Tate Dutton and his peoples who want the land to go back to the way it was of their ancestors.....no development. It technically stays in the Dutton family, and technically goes back to the people. A wonderful perfect ending to Yellowstone.

Remember people back then had hard lives and usually did things at much younger ages. So, we just need to go along with the story and not go by how he looks much older then the character he plays.

My crazy theory----- GEN1 = James GEN2 = Spencer (whose older brother John dies or has no children) GEN3 = John Sr. (son of grown up Spencer named after his uncle John/Elsa's brother) GEN4 = John Jr (Costners Dad shown in his 90s) GEN5 = John 3rd (Costner in his 60s) GEN6 = Kayce GEN7 = Tate We were all "assuming" the 1st John started the "John" chain ....what if it wasnt him? I just watched 1923 and Spencer appears to be the guy in Africa hunting big cats, but your comment is from 9 months ago (unless u just edited it again now), so was the little kid addressed as Spencer in one of the Yellowstone "1883 flashback" scenes? After watching 1923, I figured the guy in Africa was James Dutton's youngest son who wasn't born yet on 1883 (but didn't know for sure bc I had never heard of Spencer before). Glad to see my guess was correct (at least according to your comment). That said, your list is missing a generation according to Taylor's comment. According to your list, James would only be Costner's great great GF, not great great great. EDIT: On Yellowstone s05e01, Jamie says Costner is a "5th generation rancher," indicating that Jack (the kid about to get married on 1923 who is the son of Mcgraw's eldest son John - the little boy from 1883) fathered Costner's dad in all likelihood, making Tim Mcgraw Costner's great great grandfather :) In other words, your list is correct except: gen2 = John Sr. who does indeed have a child, Jack, both of whom we see on 1923 episode 1 gen3 = Jack
I would like to throw a little bit of a curve ball at you… the Chief was essentially giving James Dutton Paradise Valley as reparations for the Lakotas killing his daughter, who was at the time essentially considered comanche, but with several caveats. He said in 7 generations, and in my interpretation that meant “from you and I”. So to me, Tate is the 7th generation. Not Kayce. It will end up back in the reservation, as it should, because James clearly agrees to all parameters of the deal.

This chief seemed exceedingly wise, (settlers are coming whether we like it or not and it would be wise to get along and co-exist), and empathetic, (theses whites did the right thing trying to help the lakota tribe obtain justice, yet they reacted unwisely), and I think he instantly liked elsa and felt bad? We know James fought in the civil War and was captured in the The Battle of Antietam in 1862. He was an Officer so probably not age 17 like his wife. lets just say he was born in 1940 which would make him 22 when he was captured by the General Tom Hanks (Lol). We know for a fact little John was 5 in 1883 so we know he was born in 1878. Lets Say he had a kid when he was 22 that would make his son (John jr) be born in 1900. lets now say John Jr has a son in early 20's that would make that son's birth year around 1920 which is about the Age of Kevin Costners father played by Dabney Coleman James born around 1840 give or take a few years Little john (Sr) Born in 1878 Unknown john Jr Born around 1900ish Kevin's Costner's Dad born around 1920ish which would make him of age for WW2 John (Kevin Costner) 1955 Casey Tate so in my estimation that makes James a Great Great Grandfather to Costner's John and James Is the 1st generation Kevin's Costners John is 5th and Tate is 7th. No. The video had it right. John is 6th generation, Lee, Beth and Kayce are 7th. In season one, after Lee dies, JD gave a speech at the Cattleman's Association, and he specifically mentioned that there were seven generations of Duttons buried on the ranch. Lee had just been buried. Lee was the seventh generation. That completely ties in with Taylor Sheridan saying that James was the great great great grandfather. And, working out an approximate 20-year space between generations, everything ties.
i was using a 20ish year timelime as well except for Costner's John. Yes, It is Mathematically possible to squeeze another Generation in their family Tree but the Gen's between John Sr born in 1878 and John Dutton that would have had to have a son not daughter right at 18-20 not a year or two later. Yes, back then having kids at that age was the norm but the probability of having a Son is only 50/50 so you might of had to wait a few more years/childbirth. 4 Gen's in row having a son right on cue is going against the odds but This is fiction, we are all fans and we are just having fun thinking about it. I like both shows. TS wrote Y years before 1883 so if there are plot holes and stuff I don't really care. He's doing a great job bringing back American Western Culture to the Screens.
I think you probably nailed it, I didn't add in a generation before John's father (Dabney Coleman) because it was said he died at 90 in 2006 (approximately). I saw it plausible that he could have fathered JD, (Costner) at 44. Also Beth stated her father was 60, making him born around 1960.

Some people don't want to be associated with a place where they or family members been assaulted, kidnapped, or attempted murder. Realize that from a victims perspective. Monica, Tate and Kayce have had alot happen in say a 2 year time period?
My son was born in the early 1980's I was born in 1963, my Dad was born in 1934, his Dad was born in 1900, his Dad was Born in 1868, his Dad would have had to have been born in the late 1700's. That would make him my 2nd great grandFather. My 3rd great GrandDad would have been born in the 1600 hundreds. If the current John Dutton is in his 60's as I am, Then there is no way James Dutton (Tim McGrew) could be his 3rd great grand Dad and fought in the civil war.
I think Taylor was just incorrectly remembering the number of "greats" in the clip of the interview. At most James Dutton would be John Dutton III (Costner) Great Great grandfather.
I think Taylor mispoke. Tim McGraw is James, his son is John, then he had a son who was John Jr, Kevin Costner is John the III, that makes James his great-grandfather.
So in 1932 we might expect to see: John as a grandfather (age 54) Unnamed Dutton as Father John as grandson (age 15) This would be easy to pull off because Audie Rick's character and Dabney Coleman's character could be played by different actors due to the age difference. Sadly, this is an indication that this might be the last part of the prequels.
What if Spencer has a child...names him John after his older brother (Elsas brother) dies & has no kids. So the John name starts THEN? ....that would keep the 3 Johns in sync & possibly fill in the missing 7th generation? just a thought
I think 1932 is going to really help us with this confusing family tree and fill in some blanks. But John Dutton on Yellowstone is John Dutton III. Who knows what they called Dabney Coleman's John Dutton (Jr? II?) , or why there wasn't a John Dutton in the missing generation that we have not yet met.
Well the missing john was kelvin Costner's brother who died. As his father sits with kevin in the valley on that rock speaking of things he misses he says he misses his wife Kevin's mom and Kevin's brother... So hopefully the missing brother gets mentioned more in 1932 when it aires all i know is taylor has everyone waiting. I just started watching yellowstone 2022 and i watched every season it was great. Beth and Rip give my life hope...Im pretty untamable and has a potty mouth just like beth. Ive also caught up on 1883 i cried when elsa died but it can only get better as she plays a separate character for taylor in 1932
James Dutton is older than his wife, as he was a Captain in the Confederate Army. In fact she was worried about him, but as they got married young, that may not be an issue either.

Wait, I need clarity. So, James and his wife died. Elsa died. That leaves lil John and Spencer the child they had in Montana. Both boys are left in the care of James's brother and his wife (their aunt &uncle) after the parent's demise. Spencer is away in Africa. I believe its Spencer who carries on the Dutton family line because his Aunt Carra in Episode 3 of 1923 writes Spencer and informs him that both his brother John and uncle are dead/dying. Spencer's older bother is lil John. Lil John was married, but I don't remember them having children. One of the guys killed in the shoot out against the Irishman is the lil John from 1883, no?
One correction. Tate’s mom is zero Native American. She’s Chinese American lol and her last name is really Chow. Although she does have a surprisingly similar look to my first wife who was Native American - Menominee.

I felt right from that moment when 1883 made the prediction/prophecy. Casey’s son is the generation to inherit the land back and it comes full circle. It is quite poetic, I thought.
I think part of the confusion is that in some places, Dabney Coleman, who played Costner's father, was credited as John Dutton Jr, leading some people to think he was James' (Tim McGraw's) grandson, and the son of the kid who got yelled at for saying grace badly.

Kevin Costner and I were both born in 1955, so I am assuming that the John Dutton character was born about that time; ME - Born 1955 Mother - Born 1935 Grandmother - Born 1913 Great Grandmother - Born 1896 Great-Great Grandfather - Born 1860 Great-Great-Great Grandfather - Born 1830, fought in the Civil War If James Dutton had been born in 1840, he would have been 22 years old at Antietam, old enough to have been a Captain in the CSA, then 43 years old during the first season of 1883.

I’m still confused why they were given land in paradise when they’d only just met. And then the lease was 7 generations. Felt like a rushed set up for the future. But regardless of that 1883 was a great show. Great acting, story, pacing and beautiful scenery.
Soooo, Casey’s generation is the one who loses the ranch (unless his son gets to keep it) and all this “f bomb” dropping drama will be over. Sad Sheridan couldn’t write it without all the vulgar language.
I really liked this video. People often get the genealogy wrong or like me they just take shortcuts because they do not want to recite all those great greats, third and fourth and 1st and second removes. This reminds me of when President Obama mentioned that his Uncle had liberated Auschwitz during WWI. The geeks in the internet jumped all over it. Saying that the President did not have an uncle since his mother was an only child. And that the Red Army liberated Auschwitz not the U.S. Army. Well the man was Charles Thomas Payne his Grandmother's younger brother. And he did serve in the 89th infantry division that liberated Ohrdruf not Auschwitz. As a Black American so much of our history has been lost or taken away from us for us getting the EXACT details right is oftentimes very difficult.
Unrelated but I have a picture of my great great grandfather. And honestly I look just like him. History is cool. And I guess the "looks" comes back several generations later. Another cool thing is that they named the show 1883. Because my farm was built in 1883. As a kid I remember meeting my grandparents, parents. I can't recall the encounter other then a wooden rocking horse. I wish I could talk to them today.

Older than he looks... he's 51. And yes, he's cowboy.. at least in the sense that he grew up (part time) on a ranch in the small country town of Cranfills Gap, TX.

Let's see... James Dutton was depicted as a officer for the Confederacy fighting at Antietam in 1862, which would have made him at least 20 years old. 1883 is 21 years from 1862, so this would have made James Dutton 40-41 in 1883, perhaps a little older.
Nope, nope and nope. Casey is 6th generation. James was a Major in the CSA when captured at Dunker Church, Antietam September 17, 1862, and served 3 years in a Union Prison Camp. James had to have been the youngest officer in the CSA to be a Major at 17. His wife spent the war as a nurse and pregnant with Elsa in 1865, making her 18ish in 1883-4.
The fact that people are saying that the guy who actually invented the characters and actually knows the story, is wrong, boggles my mind. Is it possible that maybe, just maybe, he knows something about the family that you don't? I mean someone getting a girl knocked up at fifteen or sixteen and dying young, solves a lot of these 'inconsistencies' with the years people keep bringing up.
I knew there were some great great great grandfathers and I knew Tim McGraw was the great great grandfather etc. I didn’t know how many greats but I knew his little boy in 1883 had to be a great great grandfather I don’t know how many grades to Kevin Costner John Dutton they’re just too many holes thereI like history and I like stories and this is a very interesting story Taylor Sheraton doesn’t outstanding job first time I’ve ever seen a western since Lonesome Dove High Plains drifter outlaw Josie Wales bonanza just to name a few of the all time greats that I really enjoy this ranks up there while done
