It was a dirt bike website that you can explode the parts of the bike and order the OEM part. I want to say, motorcycleparts.com but it was like ten years ago
Man, I'm glad it wasn't a major problem in the engine. Always hate it when something small and stupid ends a ride, but at least it wasn't a nightmare to fix.
Everybody likes to bag on KTMs, but most of the time, like any bike, people who neglect them will have problems with any bike. As you take care of this little beauty, it will give you years of great service. Most people beat the crap out of them, and they take it well.
Good to know. It was abused before I got it, so with some new parts and a lot of bonding time with the wrenches, we are getting to know one another and hopefully she will return the kindness. Still haven't come up with a name yet though. Any ideas? I've given you some ideas in the past.
I have an Evil one out back... I'd love to have a big one, but the 50 is a spiteful beast. Dumped new parts at that bike and it just kept throwing up more old ones. It hates me. Can't win em all though... they redesigned that bike completely for a reason... lol Truth is... I'd like a new Beta more than a KTM... but I'd settle... lol
How the hell did you take off the kickstarter gear without removing thw clutch? Please help! I have a problem with my 2004 ktm 525sx. When i kick, from time to time it's like looses the grip and the kick is slipping. And it's completely random too.
That was a long time ago. I'm pretty sure I have another video explaining how I got it off without removing the clutch. It isn't a step by step tutorial and it's short but I do talk about how it worked
I got a 2010 KTM 250 xcw with 50 original hours on it . Never race never get beat .. but the kick start is sometime real hard to kick . And sometimes feel like it's jumps some threads.. is it possible that my issue ??
Could be. Mine would kind of get hung up before it just just wouldn't grab any teeth any longer. If I remember correctly. It was like 5 years ago I did this video. AFter the fix the bike is still running strong though.
Believe I am beginning to experience symptoms. Not much on RU-vid (or I am searching with bad terminology!) I have a 07 450EXC is starting to “skip” or “fail to grab or engage” on the kick start stroke. Same symptoms as you experienced?
How did you get it back in without removing clutch basket I have a 98 300exc with it out of it but the clutch basket is there and I can't seem to break the nut loose?
It took a lot of work but it is possible. I have another video that I talk about what I did. Everyone told me to get an impact wrench but I was able to get it off and back on without removing the clutch basket.
I have a 96 ktm 360 exc and just rode it yesterday kicked just fine all day till the kick starter did the same thing yours did where the gear wouldn’t catch the other gear. I took off the case cover today seen this video and pulled the bearing and the gear came right out without removing the clutch case! So supper stoked about that, but when I pulled the shaft out and same thing as yours but the spring on mine actually snapped completely in half :/ now I need to find a new spring could you point me in the right direction on getting a new spring? And what that spring is called? Thanks for the help man!
Justin Peterson my spring snapped in half as well. I got the replacement at cheap cycle parts. Com or something like that. I can look it up tomorrow but the really cool thing about that site is you can explode each piece of the bike to get what your looking for. The website logo is yellow and black
DUDE!! There are few things more satisfying than figuring out what the problem is. But if I had to pick one, it would be fixing the problem. You're half way done man. The question is, will it be a ridiculously expensive spring like parts generally for a German car? Or reasonably priced like something for a Japanese car? ;-)
Ride AMAP I can't tell you the number of things I've bought that I could ONLY find online and the shipping was more than the item. Amazon Prime has helped with that a lot though :-)
What was the symptom? My kickstart gets stuck upright and all my weight (220lbs) won't budge it, but if I really work at it and break it loose the bike starts up and runs great. Maybe this is my issue?
My kick start just wouldn't grab. It wouldn't engage the crank. It was an easy fix once I got the case apart. It would push start and run great, just couldn't use the kick start to get it going. If your piston isn't seazed up and it runs off of a bump start, you might have something jamming up the kick start gears.
I am guessing that this is the exact same problem my 95' KTM 300 exc is having, please if you could help me out and answer a few questions that would be greatly appreciated!
Ride AMAP When your kick starter stopped working did it catch with the motor and start spinning around ? Thats what happened with mine.. When not running, it will catch if I push it forward, and sound like a broken ratcchet if I pull it backwards. Is this kind of what you were having?
I have a 98 250 sx and I have the same issue as you. How did you remove the kick start gear with the clutch case in the way. I saw you said you were able to manipulate that rear gear, to access behind it but I can’t seem to find a way to get to it without removing the clutch. If you have any advice or helpful info I would appreciate it.
Honestly, it's been a while since I made this repair and if I didn't say it in the video, I don't think I can remember what or how. The good news is that the bike has had zero issues since I make this fix. I did not have to remove the clutch basket. The gear will come out, you just have to manipulate it correctly. The hardest part was getting the nut off without an impact wrench.
How did you get that gear out without removing the clutch??! I would like to avoid taking the clutch out of my bike if i can seems to be the same problem
