@@noneyabizz8337 It was well known to those who looked into it back then. 😁 On forums where Eurotrash (jk lol) tried to rag on the Corvette, I constantly brought up how the C6 z06 not only did AS well on a track compared to the 911 and F430 (c6 z06 tied their track time on Top Gear), the C6 also got better mpg on the road than the other euro exotics back then. Tying track times of 911 and F430, all with the z06 having engine in front, AND good mpg, along with an award winning engine (LS7) for *under $70,000?* Yikes! When I was doing research before buying my 2008, I was told I would get 30 mpg on the highway and I thought that was ridiculous for a 436 hp car. My first drive in it was from Edmonton, Alberta to Ottawa, Ontario and it turned out to be true. Nobody buys a Corvette to save gas (and in town you won't) but it is a nice bonus. And those gas pump barrier things are maddening as they are perfectly placed to harm your door! The other positive feature for long trips is the amount of storage space in a C6. Nice video!

This was eight years ago so I don't know if procedures have changed. I got a temporary paper license from Alberta authorities that was good for a week and I was supposed to drive straight east. Somehow my GPS took me to west to Jasper and Banff first!😉 It was a great trip, visiting those two towns, driving the Icefield Parkway, stopping at the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller. For reference: I get 22.6 mpg with a Mazda RX-8 on long german Autobahn trips. So 30 mpg for the Corvette is real impressing. The engine seems to have a low inner resistance and does not suffer under low load inefficiency.
@vincentrobinette1507
@vincentrobinette1507 7 месяцев назад
Actually, the Corvette gets this mileage because the engine IS under load! The high gearing, which lowers the RPM of the engine keeps the torque up, negating the pumping losses by high manifold vacuum. Modern cars, like the Toyota Prius, get their good mileage on the freeway, because they maintain low manifold vacuum. They adjust RPM to maintain the power needed to maintain speed, while keeping the throttle mostly open. Using the high gearing offered by this transmission does a similar thing. You will find that your Mazda RX-8 runs much higher RPM.

Back around 2007, the c6 z06 tied the 911 and F430 on the Top Gear track (look it up, top gear still has the c6 z06 episode on RU-vid). Imagine that, a FRONT ENGINED, $70,000 c6 z06 Corvette that gets 30 mpg highway tied the TRACK time of $200k to $300k euro exotics back then.😁 Now, of course, GM did not make it all leather interior (I criticized them for not making it optional back then), true, so it has plasticy dashboard, but that could be added afterward if you wanted and STILL be way cheaper in price than the 911 or f430 back then. 😨

Yup the LT, then LS’s with the 6 speed got some amazing mpgs. The autos weren’t terrible, but being rear end ratio and transmission gear limited. I have a 2000 z28 with 3.23 gears stock, and before I modified it I got a solid 25 mpg on the highway. Oh and fyi it was rated at 23mpg. These LSX motors are incredibly fuel efficient given the right fuel and “mild” driving 😉. My best tank was 30.1mpg on my way to NY Here's the 2 entries from my NY to STL trip - the 7/6 entry is from Date - Miles - Gallons - MPG - Cost 7/6/14 477.00 16.940 28.16 3.799 7/5/14 502.10 17.128 29.32 3.659

I truly miss my C6 with the LS2... Yep, if I drove it gently, I could get 30 MPG on long freeway trips. That was a big "if" though :) My only complaint about the LS2 was the piston slap when it was cold.

That is impressive 👏. I believe some vehicles powerplants are so under powered it causes them to be less fuel efficient. You've also got to drop the RPM's at highway speeds and I believe that lots of manufacturers fail to build this into the drive train.

it's aerodynamic and at the 75mph colorado interstate speeds it's operating at a good spot in its power band. EPA tests something crazy low like 50 or 55mph where the aero doesn't matter as much (vs a taller car) and the engine is barely breaking a sweat

@dennislyon5412
@dennislyon5412 6 месяцев назад
The 6th gear in the C4s was so tall, that you couldn’t - or shouldn’t- use it below about 65 mph. I’m sure the C6 ratios were similar. When a V8 spins that low of rpm at highway speeds, the throttle has to open more just to hold the highway speed, since the V8 engine isn’t really ”power” efficient at less than 2000 rpm. An open throttle and low rpm on a 2 valve engine that’s not working hard means mpg. This idea - back in the 90’s - told me that hybrid powertrains (work an engine slightly harder to drive the car - AND - to charge a battery) will work. Not necessarily a Corvette thing (hybrid powertrain), but look where we’ve come since - 55+ mpg Prius, and the like. And if you go full electric - even more efficiency!

Legit Street Cars tuned his C5 for lean burn at low load highway cruising. He got 40 mpg on the highway. Any skilled tuned with HP Tuners can do it. Absolutely no risk to the engine. As soon as the load increases over minimal levels, it goes back into the OEM tables. Perfectly safe to cruise on the highway at 15:1 AFR.

I believe it. Recently I needed a rental car to get from California to Nebraska and only thing they had available was a 2021 Mustang GT. Yup. They're light, they're slippery, and you basically idle down the highway, I got 26MPG average in my C5 and I don't drive nice. GM did really well on highway MPG in general. @@noneyabizz8337Not true. My 2013 Mustang 5.0 actually reads 0.5 to 1 mpg lower than what I do hand calculated at the pump. I don't usually monitor mpgs but when I do it's pretty close or 0.5 mpg optimistic at most.

My previous was a 2008 manual with the 3.55 ratio. I usually averaged 23-24 mpg on regular fuel and 28-29 mpg highway. Traded it on a Coyote with manual and 3.73 and get about 20 mpg and around 26 mpg highway at 75 mph on premium. The difference in mpgs is worth it cause I didn't buy something with power to get good gas mileage.

Having a bigger engine doesn't necessarily mean it's going to burn more fuel for any given drive. The biggest key for better fuel efficiency is gearing. When the engine has more power, it doesn't need to spin as fast to keep things moving. For regular road use, you can use a lower differential gear ratio, or a transmission with a lower overdrive gear ratio. I used to have an '03 Mustang GT (5spd manual) that was equipped with a rear end ratio of around 2.70:1. It was not the fastest in acceleration (for a mustang), and it was a convertible, so it was also a bit heavier than most ponies. The 4.6 SOHC was smaller by a bit over than a liter, when compared to the engine in the Vette, (though that's somewhat made up for by the over head cam in the mustang, vs pushrods in the Vette). Most OHV engines are more fuel efficient than equivalent OHC engines, there's just less metal spinning around, so the engine has less parasitic loss. The engine will likely have a lower redline when compared to OHC counterparts, and will usually peak on power at a lower RPM - The slower you spin an engine, the less it has to fire, the less fuel gets burned. Additionally, OHV engines usually have fewer valves, so even by default, it can't get as much oxygen flowing through, so less gas can be burned. At 75mph, the engine was turning at around 1250rpm. -I took the car on a road trip to FL from NJ, and I was blown away by how well the car did for mpg's. By the end of the trip, I calculated that it had gotten an average of around 37 on the way down, and about 34 on the return trip. (on the way back, I may have been exceeding the speed limit by a little bit, which accounts for the difference in economy)

I had a Trans Am (carbureted HO with 5spd manual) in the early '80s that got about 30mpg on the highway too. And, yes, even little Toyota Corollas did not do that well at the time. But once you got off the highway and drove it around town it would average about 16mpg in mixed driving. The key to good mpg in those cars was cruise control. If you mashed it for even a few seconds that good MPG went down the toilet. The elephant in the room though is that it required high octane fuel. And that, my friends, meant that fuel cost per mile was terrible.

This is great! I both love and hate that more people are finding this out. Big V8s are very capable of getting good mpg. My old 94 cadillac with a 4.9 got about 27 mpg on the freeway going 65.
