I just love Bettas! Mine is in his own planted 6.7 gallon setup with a few mystery snails and a red ramshorn that appeared out of nowhere. He constantly interacts with us and he's so curious about everything. He reminds me of a nosey dog lol.
I have a sparkling gourami in my 25 gallon community tank and even if it’s one of the smallest fish in it, it is my absolute favorite fish in the entire tank. So much personality and just sticks out from the tank. (I’m slightly biased towards gouramis since they are my absolutely favorite species of fish)
I have my betta in a 20 gall with a few mollies. 2 weeks ago I put the mollies outside for the warm season. Betta stopped swimming and sat at the bottom of the tank moving only to eat a little. So yesterday I put him outside. You'd think it was a family reunion.
@@thesmallscape they are in a 30 gal tub all chilin. He loves eating mosquitos when they land on the surface to lay eggs. He has come close to jumping out to catch them. Its pretty cool.
I got my betta from KG! She’s so pretty and has so much personality and I’ve had her for about half a year now. Love to support businesses that take good care of their bettas 😁
@@thesmallscape I've had white cloud minnow fry, endlers, and a young molly. I'm gathering supplies to upgrade to a 10, just looking for a big piece of foam to make a matten filter... got any tips/videos on that?
Great video! I have a pea puffer in a planted 5 gallon. When we got him, he was so tiny we always had to look for him among the plants, like looking for Waldo in the children's books "Where is Waldo?", so that's how he got his name. Waldo is a very curious guy and always watching when you are near his tank, "helicoptering" up and down. His favorite foods are brine shrimp and bloodworms and of course- snails! (but I can't watch him sucking them out of their shells, I feel bad for them). Of course we have Bettas, some alone in 5 gallon tanks and some in bigger community tanks. My Peacock Gudgeon are in a group and so pretty, but kind of shy. They need their Glowlight Tetra friends to help them come out from hiding. Never had Scarlet Badis, but I'm tempted. Sparkling Gouramis? Maybe.
Good morning Joanna!! What a great question. I'm so excited to be in the world of Nano tanks. Of course I've always kept bettas but now I'm loving other options for stocking our 5 gallon tanks! I just received a new fish, a Betta Mahachaiensis. I've watched our friends Kasia Creative Pet Keeping and Taylor Simply Betta to learn a little more about him 💝 I love Peanut the coworker. She is so adorable💝 Oh my goodness I've been looking at KGs website for quite a while, it's so hard to choose so I keep asking myself which one really catches my eye the most and I think it's the blue rimmed betta with the Snow White Platinum body, they are so beautiful 😍 someday I'm going to get me one 🎉😁 The little peacock gungeon is such a beautiful little fish. I never realized they can got the little hump on their head, I'm with you I think it makes it adorable! One of the fish that is definitely on my wish list! I've always been fascinated by the pea puffers, they look so magical to be potential little stinkers 😂😍 That's really cool about the sparkling or croaking gourami and the sounds they make! Another beautiful choice 😍 The Scarlet Badis is such a stunning little fish too! I would definitely try any of these little fish. It would be cool to have all kind of different Nano tanks set up with different little fish in them!! A little Nano collection 😁 I have one little community 5 gallon with rice fish, shrimp, and Vienna Guppies that are small (kind of like endlers) It really is a neat tank... it looks like a big aquarium that has been shrunk down 😂❤️ Thanks for another wonderful video Joanna! I missed you guys so much Wednesday night, our internet has been going in and out. Being in the camper it's not picking up very well. so I'm going to have to get my own to use out here!! I hope you are having a wonderful weekend and enjoying all the new fish you have!! Love and blessings to you all!!🙏🌿🐟🌿🥰❤️
Mary, you would love the scarlet badis. I posted a video with mine recently and it only sort of does him justice. He is just the cutest little fish and he keeps me company while I'm on my computer. You never really think just how much happiness a little fish can give you.
Hi Joanna I have had a pea puffer. Just one named him Kermit. He has since passed but thinking of getting another one. Great choices. I love the last tiny one you mentioned. Very cute. Thank you and enjoy your weekend 🐟
I had a single female peacock gudgeon along with 18 pygmy corys and a bamboo shrimp in my 15g, and it was a very harmonious tank. Lots of plants and stones along with botanicals really helped the pygmy corys feel secure. I actually prefer the look of the female peacock gudgeon better than the male because of the black stripe on the caudal fin on the females
Inside/outside suggestions too ... the plants you can have in your tanks, but spilling out around them. Pothos, obviously (so many varieties!), plus peace lilies, and so many more...
@@pjp9383 , yes. Absolutely! I would definitely like to see something like this. Plants have such a way of enhancing our aquariums both inside and out.
The sparkling gourami actually differentiates from the croaking gourami due to having more vibrant colours and grows much smaller than croaking gouramis. Sparkling gouramis can up to 1.5 inches and croaking gouramis can grow up to 2.5-3 inches. Great video!
I just found your channel after following Jason’s Prime Time Aquatics. I like how you focus on smaller setups and have great tips for aquascaping - and wear cool tshirts 🤣👍 Digging the optimus prime ⭐️ Thank you!
Thanks for the amazing and helpful video. I keep a Betta in 5 gallon, he has shrimps as tank mates. His name is Jack, has 3 years old now and a great personality. But i have to keep him alone, he don't tolerate other fishes. I really love him and i hope Jack will have a long happy life. 🤗
I'm not allowed to look at Lisa's bettas anymore 😪 But only because I want so dang many of them, they're SO gorgeous. What a great list you put together for a 5g. Never thought about a gudgeon, that would be cool. Hope you had a great weekend. 👍❤👍
Now I want a 5 gallon with a Peacock Gudgeon, lol! I never thought about going with anything smaller than a 10 gallon tank, but I would love to have something on my computer desk....That and I bet it would be fun to scape a tank that size. Great list and as always, awesome content! Thanks!
I love your videos! My son brought me a pea puffer recently. I’ve never had one before. She is in a 5 gallon tank and just recently staring to come out when someone comes near to the tank. Really cute fish! I also recommend Betta’s from KG Tropicals. I have a beautiful grizzle female and a samurai male both in ten gallon aquariums. You have me thinking about a peacock gudgeon in the future!
Hi Tamara! A pea puffer! Oooh - how fun!! I’m so glad to hear she’s starting to come out more! And I bet your bettas are gorgeous - I do love the samurai. ☺️
I really want to get a pea puffer, I've never kept one. The only fish from your list that I have kept is the betta. I hope you have an amazing weekend.
I loved this video! The fish options were gorgeous! I have had bettas, but as I am stiing up a new tank, I was looking for new ideas! I am thinking scarlet baddas!!!
Hello Joanna 😁 I currently have or have had all of the fish you've highlighted here. I do not currently have any Badis species ☹️ I really like all of these fish, but I have only housed male bettas and puffers alone. They are the only fish my hubby is "understanding" with being housed alone in a tank but wished I loved other species more! LOL, when I had 10 male betta tanks, he was not too thrilled. 🤣
Great video. I kept my sparkling gouramis in a group of three, but I'm guessing they were all males because they would spar a bunch. And boy did they ever croak. I think that was how they competed. I really enjoyed them. Unfortunately they fought too much, now I only have one and he is much better alone. He doesn't croak anymore but he seems at peace. I have a scarlet badis in my 5.5 gallon desk tank and love him. He is the most inquisitive fish I've had, up there with the sparkling gourami, and I just love the way he stops and starts, then darts about the aquarium. Recently posted a video of the tank with him in it. He's called the tank home for almost 4 months now. He feeds on the daphnia in the tank. Recommend these guys for sure!
I just set up my 2nd tank the other day. It's a 5.5 gallon & I got a deep purple male veintail betta. I haven't named him yet but he has so much personality!
For someone who just has room or a desire for one fish and a small tank, you can do one of those Plug 'n Play Fluval Flex tanks and once it's scaped using your channel for guidance, the drop one fish in it and create a relationship with their new friend! Excellent video Joanna!!
i love the fluval tanks. personally i like getting a rimless tank and starting from scratch but their tanks are definitely an exception. set up a 5 gallon spec for my mom recently and its working great!
Have you ever tried keeping killifish? They are really great fish that most would do great in a 5 gallon tank. You can even breed many is that sized tank. I would suggest starting with fundulopanchax gardneri. Not many people keep them. It would be something different and exciting for your views. Their beauty will impress! Just remember to keep a tight lid on the tank.
I've been stuck between considering a gourami or a scarlet badis for a while now, waiting until my current occupants in my 10 gal pass from age until I make a new set up for a new fish.
This video came up when searching something unrelated. I learned about Peacock Gudgeons from you and Jason. I got 3 juveniles (1M/2F) who were ruthless with my male betta in a 20g, so I moved them to a 10g by themselves. Fast forward, now they're adults and have spawned once. The male is relentless in his quest to spawn again after eating the first batch about a week ago. Can I move one of them back into my 20g with my betta? There are also 6 Otos and some Nerites in there, but everyone is peaceful. The largest of the peacocks is female and she was the most vicious with my betta before when I had them together so she's likely not the best option. Best option might be the male. What do you recommend? ❤❤❤ Love you guys.
Really enjoyed thus video. I watched it 3 times just to really study the different options. I have been thinking about setting up a desk tank at work and enjoyed seeing the choices. I think the scarlet badis or sparkling gourami would be my pick.
thanks for this awesome list. didnt know scarlet badis and peacock gudgeon could be kept in 5gal. i have one 5 gallon tank right now, its my first ever tank. only has shrimp right now but once they start breeding im going to get a few medaka rice fish, my all time favorite fish!
I currently have 2 pea puffers in a 20 gallon. Of course, I have several bettas. Some of my bettas are in nano tanks and some are in community tanks. I have kept gourami before, but I don't have them now. I've been breaking down all my nano tanks. I just can't take care of them. I'm moving toward community tanks. Nothing smaller than a 20 gallon. Ultimately I would like to have nothing smaller than my 33 longs.
I like my fish to have friends in a community setting I think. All these options are intriguing though. I only struggle with the jumpers. I hate it when I find them all crisped up on the floor.
@@thesmallscape You ask and... umm... give me your address or PO and I send you one. Ed's was a one of one, one of a kind for a one of a kind kind of guy, but I can make more. I'm playing with the colors.
Hi I have a cycled 15 gallon aquarium ready and now I want to stock it. Can I put 1 Male betta, 6 ember tetra, 1 otocinclus and 4 armano shrimps. Please advise will they fair well together? I want to set up an aquarium with minimum bio load. Betta will be my center piece fish, I can do maintenance after 15 days for sure. I just want to keep my betta accompanied and keep the bio load as low as possible. My tank has plants and has a 5 watt hang on back filter. Can you please suggest me somethings and help me get a decent community tank with min bio load. I am happy to remove a few fishes. Please advise.
I have a 6 gallon all set up but am torn between sparkling gourami and a pea puffer. ! Dirted and sand capped planted .. only one in 6 g? I have read they like to be grouped and oh my if your on a forum it’s like “you need a 20 g and 6 each lol! Which do you think would be the most visable and enjoyable ?
I have a 5 lowboy it has the footprint of a 10 but actually bigger but its ofc very short. I was thinking a trio of pea puffers could that possibly work? If not ill just get a croaking gourami. Good vid as always
Killi fish are great for fives! Jokes on me today trying to paint ( first time painting) the new grow out tank. I think I’m getting more paint on me then the tank.
I could say I have a 5g but I'd be lying! I do have a 2 or 3 gallon cylinder tank on my desk but that's not why we're here today. I'll shut up and see what today's video wisdom is to be bestowed upon us.
Trying to convert US gallons to UK gallons as there is a difference. Easier for me to work in litres. 5 US gallons is 18.92 litres or liters as you would spell it 😂. My smallest tank is 38 litres which is 10 US gallons. So I could get 2 pea puffers and two of everything else but the Betta, rather than one?
If you are able to buy or make a good divider (with no possibility of them slipping through or jumping over top) then you can keep 2 bettas. But a betta will also love having a whole 10g tank to themselves! I feel like the pea puffers would do better as a single or in a larger tank as a larger group, rather than the potential of a head-to-head if there are just two of them. Pretty standard practice to diffuse aggression by keeping larger groups of aggressive fish. But I've never kept pea puffers, so I don't know if my suspicion is correct.
Hey Miss Joanna I have a question for you. IDK if this has already been asked and answered, but, once you've glued Anubias nana petite to a piece of wood, can it safely be taken off? If so, then how? I want to take the wood out, but want to keep the Anubias in my tank. Somewhere. LOL.
Hi, Cathy! Sure it can! You can remove the Anubias and leave the glue attached - or just cut off the part of the rhizome that is covered in glue. But if there are any roots on that glued section, don’t discard, it quite possibly will continue to grow its little bitty self too!. ☺️
@@thesmallscape Oh cool. Do I need to leave the root in the glue? Or pull off the glue with root still in it? And then do I need to plant it or put it in water?
I wouldn’t recommend keeping pea puffers in anything smaller than a 20gallon long and in anything less that a shoal of 6 because they are a social fish
Oh for sure, at some point I will do group stocking options for the 5. I just thought it would be fun to present a list of solitary fish that could handle the tank all by themselves ☺️
I wouldn't consider myself an expert fishkeeper (intermediate, maybe?) But frozen food is readily available at Petsmart etc, as well as mom and pop aquarium stores. I mostly keep pretty basic fish - bettas, guppies, corydoras and a few extra other types - and I always keep a selection of frozen stuff on hand. Nothing very complicated about it, just pop a cube out to defrost (or shave a bit off a larger chunk of frozen food), and add it to the tank with tweezers. Biggest challenge would be getting the quantity right so as not to waste too much of it, if the only fish you had was a scarlet badis.
