Yeti Tundra Haul vs Coleman Coolers - Ice Test

We packed both a Yeti Tundra Haul and an equivalently sized Coleman cooler full of ice and left them outside to see how long the ice would last. The Yeti cooler cost nearly 10x the price of the Coleman cooler here so I was really curious to see how much better the Yeti actually was. Yeti coolers have developed a cult like following and I was curious to see how much is just branding versus superior performance. Fortunately we didn't have any bears visit during the test so we didn't need to put Yeti's claim of their coolers being bear proof to the test.

The coleman claim usually hold true, but of course one would precool the drinks and probably fill up ice to 3/4th, not barely to 50% load capacity....or fill in more pre-cooled drinks. Fully filled with either cold stuff is needed and makes a difference. I have two Coleman, love them.

Why not just putting the 50$ Coleman cooler in a bigger 70$ Coleman to have the thicker walls AND still save 250$ 😂🤷🏻‍♂️👍🏻

Absolutely worth every penny. I decided one day after having mix match coolers for years. We boat, we cabin etc. dropped nearly $1000 for various pieces and coffee cups etc… shouldn’t need to ever buy another again (unless buddy’s borrow and conveniently forget to return them) but I now have my old pieces as loaners. No joke though, if you afford Yeti buy it. Ask yourself do you budget on guns, golf clubs or cigars? For me that’s a hell no. So yea, I’m Yeti all the way. For the record Yeti has never paid or sent me anything. I don’t need anything free, besides I have a three piece set… 🇺🇸

True, but some folks put a certain value on what they feel for what is important. Two of the richest folks that I know drive cars that are below their worth if that makes sense. My Glock 17 will kill someone just as fast as my GX4 or High Point. I own Yeti too and feel they are great products, but for the average person's use (1-2 days of ice), their needs will be met with a Coleman.

Somehow we all survived before they invented Yeti coolers. There are cheaper roto-molded options if that is what you want. Thanks for sharing.

We've had a large yeti ended up giving it away practically brand new because the couple times using it the ice was completely melted by the end of the day and continue to use the colmen we've had for years works alot better

Outstanding idea for a video, brother. Seems like the Coleman held its own. For the average person, it’s probably the smarter choice. I bought an RTIC for our upcoming trip to Florida. It’s wasn’t YETI expensive, but it was still expensive lol.

You can buy a LOT of ice for that extra $350… like he said it just depends if you’re doing weekend trips or longer camping trips. If I was RVing across the country or heading somewhere remote I might consider springing for the Yeti. But for backyard cookouts and the occasional 2-3night camping trip…Coleman would be more than adequate. Heading to scoop one up from FB Marketplace for $25 since Walmart ran out when they had them on sale for $29.99! I wonder had the Coleman been completely full of ice if it would have lasted the full 5 days before completely melting-although we always tend to Full ours to the brim with food and drinks so the ice capacity isn’t quite as much.

@@RetrowTV yes this was my first thought...w coolers you stuff them to the gills with ice and/or *already cold things* to take up as much air space as possible. so, soda is fine, pre cooled etc.

@@RetrowTV Sometimes you can find great deals on MarketPlace. I just bought a Grizzly 40 for 140 brand new. I missed a Yeti 60 for 100 bucks though. It need new latches because one was broken off and a power wash, but a hell of a deal if you ask me. Xmas time is always a good time to be on the look out for that kind of stuff.

Yeti performance may not be proportional to the higher cost, but like anything it’s ok to pay more for brand, design, looks etc. We do it for clothes. Cars. Watches. Household appliances. Tools. If you have the coin you do what makes you most happy.

We just bought a yeti tundra haul after going through several cheaper coolers. Our son plays select baseball in Texas with 110+ degree full-days for tournaments. The cheaper coolers just can’t handle it - keeping fingers crossed for this season with the yeti!

4 days is long enough for me and the average consumer but for 1 10th the price and the epidemic of tweekers around the campsites I’d definitely pick a Coleman

Wouldn't adding an exterior layer of pink insulation foam board to the outside of the Coleman basically the same thing? Isn't the melting problem radiant heat that originates from the outside?

Have you done the cost analysis of refilling the cooler on a weekend trip vs not refilling a yeti? These are my thoughts of seeing this video. At $5 ice refill that's 68 weekend trips or at $10 ice refill that's 34. I'm assuming that I wouldn't have refill a yeti.

@@danielmargolis3210 Igloo is not a bad choice. What did you end up getting?I have an Igloo Reactor Soft 30 cooler that I have had almost a year that I would put up against a Flip 18 from Yeti. I am not knocking Yeti, I own a Yeti Tank and Roadie 24 and love those. Igloo to me is better over Coleman. Recently bought a Coleman Chiller 60 wheeled and man, I doubt those hinges will last steady use. Maybe a year out of it. Igloo is better built.

I have a big Coleman, been camping for years in Utah. Many times it’s over 100 degrees in the summer so I keep it in the shade or in a stream. If you have enough food and drinks for two or three nights, you need to fill it to the absolute brim with ice and you MIGHT have some left over. I’m really considering a yeti because I’m sick of wondering if my ice will run out halfway because of the heat or amount of food I’m packing.

We have a large Coleman Extreme bought in 2000. Took it to our remote cabin for a 4 day trip last summer, packed with food and ice. 17 miles from town on a dirt road, so restocking ice is not an option. Daytime temps were around 85-90, but coolers were kept inside. By day 3, almost all the ice was gone, so we left early. Anxious to try our new Yeti Tundra in the same conditions, but confident it will be a lot better!

If ice resupply is going to be challenging, always precool your cooler with ice overnight, and then start with fresh ice.

Good video, but you kept misrepresenting the price difference. The price clip you showed of the Coleman was $60. The clip you showed of the Yeti showed $400. 400/60 = 6.7 which is not almost 10 times as much. Makes the whole video seem biased.

Look, I would buy the Coleman even though the Yeti is superior. In making the 5day claim, I am sure the Yeti people didnt consider you opening and closing it allowing the warm air in. As I said, I would buy the Coleman but I can assure you I wouldnt turn down a Yeti if someone were to buy me one. (got that Honey) Also, you didnt review the handle but I can tell you first hand the telescopic one on the Coleman will eventually get jammed. This is an added plus for the Yeti.

This video could literally be cut in half. Way too long and you should have put water bottles or pop bottles in there beforehand. I watched a guy do it with a yeti and the RTIC. He did a perfect job with it and I was hoping to find out that this Coleman one would be okay but all you're doing isn't really a good way to show both I don't think. Putting in a warm pop the next day I just I don't understand that. But yeah this video could have been 2 minutes and done
