The YF-23 has got to be the most sexy fighter design I've ever witnessed just from an aerodynamic standpoint. It was radical, elegant, and alluring all at the same time.

The answer to Pierre Spray was fantastic and perfect. Metz simply ignored his whinings and asked : WTH is your proposition ? What should be built instead of F-35 ? Metz is over qualified to talk about F-35, he is an extremely experienced pilot. He tested 5th gen fighter designs. But he didn't comment because he felt his information about F-35 is not updated. How can you take someone like Spray seriously when he said: " WE FIGHTER MAFIA DESIGNED F-16 and A-10 " " F-16 upgraded with junks'' " F-15 is a big jet with a big radar and filled with junks" " Stealth design is a fraud and hoax."

I think the core of the criticism was that the F-35 was specified to be a do-everything-plane. So, instead of having three separate programs for three obviously different fighter planes, they wanted one program. Well, they noticed they needed variants of the plane, but still they wanted them be quite much the same design. Specifying three different fighter planes would have been more traditional way. Initially it would have looked like the more expensive option, but perhaps many difficulties could have been avoided that way. So, what should have been made instead of F-35? Perhaps three really different fighter planes. That was my guess. We cannot ask Mr. Sprey because he deceased.

Very interesting. I appreciate how objective, unbiased and intelligent he is. You can tell immediately he's more than just a common pilot, with his understanding of the bigger picture.

Indeed these "old hands" are great to listen to. I am very interested in the Vietnam Air war and veterans of this campaign are getting on in years, it's important to get their stories on the record by someone llke Steve who runs a top shelf channel, unlike a certain F-14 RIO!. I'll be going into the back catalogue to listen to Mr Metz's Southeast Asia episode after this one.

Thank you Sir for your service to Air Force from one to another Airmen. I remember the FB 101 at the ATC base by the name of Sheppard AFB !! God Bless you Sir, I have followed the the arcs of people like Burt Rutan Tom petite and I have always loved flight since building a squadron on 2 channel slope gliders like Wanderer , Gentle Lady and worked out a few 100” birds, Bridi Kits “big birdy” was the favorite. I was a rotor head afc 43130 fullly artuculated Jolly and super golly green heavy lift rescue helicopters. I was amazed to learn of their age!! 2were 1967 1969 were two of the three birds we had at the now defunct Myrtle Beach AFB . Love your story, very encouraging.

I’ve been digesting test pilot bios very seriously lately, deep diving the early Edwards testing. I really enjoyed listening to Paul Metz describe his experiences.

Paul didn't mention this but the engineers were projecting out to 2005 computer technology back in 1996 for the YF-23.That impressed me a lot.That plane is still 30 years ahead of its time.

I'm really relishing this one as it's dear to me for a reason you guys might find silly, but the F-23 (no Y!) was the main plane in my first flight sim (Jetfighter II) 30 years ago, and what's set the main course of my life ever since.

@@10percenttrue I wrote this already under a different interview between you and a pilot. From all the different people that have a podcast about aircraft you have the best one. It's realistic the people are telling their story's with all the good, the bad and the ugly stuff. No political correctness, no we have to be careful not to piss off the department of defense or i can't talk about this or that. Best example of this fighter pilot podcast. That's why I love this channel. Best wishes to you and one more time thank you for your time and effort to make those awesome interviews.

This is my first episode on this channel - really engaging! It doesn’t hurt it’s Paul Metz, but still, nice work. Great question regarding digital flight controls and skill atrophy. I actually wanted to ask Metz this in regards to the 23 since he was so instrumental in teachimg the 23 how to fly.

I had to disagree with Paul Metz on that one. The recent shot down of a Su-22 in Syria by a F-18, was a good reminder that not all combat will be at long ranges. Also one of the missiles fired failed. And to finish it, now we have drones in combat zones. Some of them cost less than the missile used to shoot him down, so cannons had to be a consideration on these situations.

Happy to see you back for 2022 and this was a great start. Loved hearing the backstory of the test side of 2 great jets that didn’t make it. I think the F-20 should have made it. For the YF-23, I wonder how much really was salesmanship? Thanks for continuing to bring the best out of your interviews Steve!

F-5G/F-20A had short legs and almost no payload. Certain weapons barely cleared the ground on take off and landing in clear weather. Would make a superb flight demo team fighter though.

Paul Metz is the one who said they cracked at least 2 wind screens on the YF-23s, and the boundary layer diverters restricted its max V0. There were several major things on YF-23 that needed to be solved that weren't, and the flight control surfaces were doubled up with actuators laid on their sides to keep the wings free of any bulbous protuberances that would contribute to RCS. That added complexity and cost. Then there was the lack of weapons carriage and separation demonstration. The proposed F-23A design had an added weapons bay ahead of the main bay, which increased the fineness ratio and would likely have reduced maximum load factors for pitch, roll, and yaw. I think the biggest advantage of the Northrop design was combat radius, persistence, and range. Raptor had the advantage of payload, maneuverability, working boundary layer management, and demonstrated/validated weapons carriage and separation. I still think the Grey Ghost would have been great for Pacific Theater and as an Omnirole Air Dominance/Deep Interdiction Strike Fighter.

The Soviets didn't think the Physic paper was worth the trouble. As the number to achieve radar deflection was so big. You would need to spend 20 years for each angle the aircraft would see. It would make Maxwell have a migraine. The mathematical numbers was that big..

The Ho 229 never would be stealth. Using not metallic materials was not a innovation it was a necessity because of the war and lack of available materials. Nobody EVER cared about the radar cross section of the plane. Even if EVER would be built a single one of them with ANY engine it would create quite a large RCS for the plane. I can say the same again. :( I could ask so many questions.... ... but from most of the interview I can recall only this error and the quite misleading explanation about that "outdated" planes are produced because of the Moore's law. Yes computing power is important but not so hard. No matter how strong the computer on an F-22 or any other plane what is matte for ex in BVR the lofting capability = flight performance and stealth. None of them are affected by the computing power... Yes it is better to have more power but military aviation does not need Raytracing... Yes, the avionics has to be updated especially in long term many suppliers simply disappear but ALONE the computing power is not so important. I would ask about the Vietnam SEAD, especially about the AGM-78 or F-20.

Computing power goes directly into CFD and RCS inverse-design. Especially when you have programs that factor both RCS and Compressible Aerodynamics and Separated High AoA Flow into one optimization scheme. Running 64 cores for six hours barely gets you the CFD result for a single degree angle of attack beyond stall. And you might want to see 60. Or 120 points. Computing power also means sensors get smaller including radars. This changes weight and balance and all the detail designs of each feature on every major component.
