Thank you so much for a comprehensive walkthrough. I really appreciate your intro to this video. I love Crawford too and was wondering about his translation of the Poetic Edda, so thank you for recommending it. Definitely getting this deck at some point, and I think I'd probably trim it because it seems way too big for small hands :)

Jackson is freaking awesome. I respect and have such deep gratitude towards people who educate for free so people (like me!) that don't have any money to spare, can learn too. So amazing. And it really tickles me that he is such a cowboy, reminds me of my grandpa. I really want to learn old norse and icelandic (gaelic is also on the list) and I'm learning norwegian and swedish on duolingo right now (at a slow pace because I have a 3 yr old that robs me of any ability to concentrate during the day). I feel so connected to this and druidry as well, celtic backgrounds. I'm german and american but I definitely connect to my european side much more, having been born and raised there. I need these books. The study havamal is also high on the list. Ugh I wish I had money 😭

What's one more. I really have to hand it to you, you did a really great job to touch on important topics within the timeframe you had, really really awesome. I don't think you could have crammed more "side notes" in without making it really confusing. I love your review. Now. Just to get the cards one day... do you think they will be oop soon? I have a hard time being able to guess which decks will be in print for a long time and which won't because I'm new (really new, 2 weeks in) to reading cards. My guess is these might have a short run because they are so specific and also not created by one of the much known people whose names I keep seeing. It just feels like it will not be printed for a long time. But what do I know. What are your thoughts on it? I wish I could find some of the norse related books used, like the edda by jackson and the study havamal but I've had no such luck. I'll see what I can scrounge together by black friday. Fingers crossed I'll be able to get at least one of the things I've had on my list for quite some time.

The Truth in Story same for me! As someone who works with Nordic and Finnish traditions I personally wish they made a separate card for Fenrir and Jormungandr (then Giant Wolf and sea serpent) as they both hold vital roles. I wish they did a more accurate depiction of Hel as well. This could also be me being too nit picky though!! Will I still use the deck? Absolutely! I just it was more traditionally accurate!
@TheTruthinStory
@TheTruthinStory 5 лет назад
I like the idea of the separate cards as well for Fenrir and Jormungandr and especially agree about Hel BUT then I suppose in the end the only perfect deck is the one we make ourselves LOL :D I think this was a MUCH needed deck and I'm happy to see it available!! :D

The keywords for the norns are weird because in the myths, urdhr represents the past but in this deck, it's the present. Verdhandi represents the present but in this deck, she is associated with the future. Skuld represents the future but in this deck, she is the past. But if you look at the art, the string they are holding puts them in the right order (it starts with Urdhr, Verdhandi is holding the two strings connecting the past and the future and the string ends with Skuld).
@TheTruthinStory

Ooo this is interesting and I am going to dig into this a bit further, I wonder if different traditions, this being Icelandic, look at these in different manners? Going to check!
@gunnhildur
@gunnhildur 5 лет назад
You are right, and we did take some liberties. With the three Norns we went with our understanding of their names and their meaning in Icelandic. We take Urður to mean “what has become” its like a past and present together, Verðandi “what is becoming” and Skuld means something that is owed
@SeverinaSevernaya
@SeverinaSevernaya 5 лет назад
Verdandi-responsibility for the present not for the future. Skuld-responsible for the future and the guilt of life. Urd - responsible for the past and Destiny
@Smulenify

Верданди Норны it bothered me to the point I’m hesitant to get it, how did they get that wrong? Might look for a way to trim off the keywords without mucking up the back :/
@sophiarasmussen9601
@sophiarasmussen9601 3 года назад
Thank you! Jumped out at me right away! The Norns error really upset me, mainly due to misleading labeling and listing for seekers new to this path, but the artwork flows when in the proper order side by side. I used a thin bit of a liquid white out to remove the error on each card. They still shuffle just fine. I really wish Hel (one half beautiful woman and the other side a rotting corpse) would have be correctly illustrated in this deck. Tyr lost his sword hand (typically right hand) to Fenrir but impressed with the avian hook touch in the artwork. This deck is working extremely well for me and I will continue to use them. Extremely please to have this type of deck on my collection.

In my set they seem to have the Norns the wrong way round. Urd shows as present (should be past), Verdandi shows as the future (should be present) and Skuld shows as the past (should be future). Anyone else notice this?
@TROTHofficial
@TROTHofficial 4 года назад
Nobody seems to care about accuracy... Too blinded by materialism? This box is indeed a beautiful piece of work. But the confusion the description/order of the Norns causes, is totally holding me back from buying this. I wrote to the author about the wrong descriptions of the Norns, but got no reply. Not one youtuber who has reviewed this deck has noticed the issue with the Norns in this deck. I find that concerning as many of those folks do readings for their followers.
@D-777i

I am confused by this deck's description of the Norns. I have learned, from several sources for the past decades, that Urd represents the past, Verdandi the present, and Skuld that which shall be. But in this deck, see '48:02 , Skuld represents the past, Urd the present and Verdandi represents the future? It's a beautiul deck, but the confusion about the Norns is holding me back from buying this.

I am more interested in the stories but I am excited to really work with this deck. I wrote the numbers of the corresponding pages of the guidebook on the bottom of the cards with a very fine marker. One of my students just gifted me Crawford's books earlier this year and suggested his YT channel, so talk about serendipity. Gaiman's book is sitting in my postbox as we speak. LOL. Tomorrow, I am going to see if my graphic artist/printer can produce a larger copy of the layout/spread. Because these old eyes... Great walk through, as always.

I don't think Ullr was ever married to Skadi just because they are associated to similar things but maybe the myths are different in Iceland. I'm curious to know if her marriage to Njord is mentioned in the guidebook.
@TheTruthinStory
@TheTruthinStory 5 лет назад
Hey there Karine, in the guidebook it does say under Ull (Ullur) "much like his wife Skadi" so it does imply they are HOWEVER with all mythologies you can always find variations and many times conflicting variations in the different stories as they morph over time and in specific locations so that is pretty normal :)

I'm a little confused as to why some of them are in the wrong realms? For example Thor and Tyr are gods not jotuns/giants
@TheTruthinStory
@TheTruthinStory 5 лет назад
I think many of these could fit in multiple realms so it is a matter of how they chose to do so, for example they do note that Tye is the son of the giant Hymnir but that he belongs to Odin and Asgard. With Thor he writes that while he belongs to the Aesir and resides with his wife in Asgard, he is put in Jotunheim because most of his adventures are there, they also note he could be placed in Midgard as well :)

I know this an old post but I wanted to put my input anyway. This deck is beautiful,but the guide has some inaccurate information if its based from the eddas. Straight away the creation is different from the eddas. I understand this is their interpretation. But I would say this isn't the best source for those new to norse history.

Haukur Halldórsson and his daughter Gunnhildur Hauksdóttir's Yggdrasil Norse Divination Cards being organized into a nine by nine is a good format to organize understanding, but Ásatrúarfélagið and other pre Christian spiritual cultures varied from monotheism to polytheism with untold many takes on the tales. One does not actually have to favor personification and treating those mentioned as gods to be Asatru. I would say the deck should have red for letters, symbols, and even knots-like on the back of the cards. The different styles within a single role or world gives towards some confusion. Hagu on the back implies that we are capable of all we project upon the so-called gods, goddesses, and heroes.

Oh and look up arith härger (or häger, can never remember, I think it's the former though) he is also fantastic and explains so much! You'd really get a lot out of his videos. Or anyone interested in norse or viking culture. I tend not to use the term "mythology" for their religion because to me (to me! My opinion), I find it offensive since it was their religion, and still is some people's religion. I understand in the definition of mythology itself, it is correctly used, but the connotation of it being lesser to "actual religions" is something that rubs me wrong. We don't use that term in connection with christianity or hinduism, etc etc, yet in the definition of it, mythology could be used and it would be correct, yet we give more respect to religions currently still widely practiced and I'm just no fan of that. To me the spiritual beliefs of people that lived a thousand years ago are just as valid and worthy of respect as the ones of people living today are. By no means is this meant negatively towards you, I just felt the need to write this out somehow. Thanks for the thorough review

Ok sorry, one more comment, this doesn't tie in with anything else I've said so I'm leaving it as a standalone. But man... I wish those cards were edged in black. There's no way I could (if I had them 😭) edge them without totally ruining them. I also feel like, especially with the nornir, it was a missed opportunity to line the three up next to each other and have a continuous scene. And I definitely agree with you on the part of it being strange that some pictures are modern, almost abstract looking, while the rest has that old world feel. Just a strange artistic choice in my opinion and I wish he wouldn't have done that. The picture size really could have been enlarged with an ornate border and the symbol on top and the description on bottom to balance it out vs having a larger white space on the bottom. This deck is really neat, but it could have been a lot better with a few different choices. Beautiful art though and I like the concept. Oh and regarding freya and frigg, arith härger talks about that and says basically they are two aspects of the same person. It's really interesting.

The Sigyn card is modeled closely on 'Circe Offering Cup To Odysseus' by John William Waterhouse. She holds a serpent in Her left hand and a cup in Her right. The close resemblance is a deal-killer for me. To bad. The deck has potential.
