Learn yoga anatomy with me! This lesson is a live excerpt where I teach a part of the anatomy section from my 200-hour teacher training program. (And if you're an educator you can purchase the student handout, presentation, and trainer notes that I use here to teach this curriculum yourself).
Learning the language of anatomy gives us a common framework for discussing movement, which sets us up for understanding alignment and sequencing.
Learning Objectives:
After this lesson, you will be able to:
- Describe three reasons that understanding anatomical language is helpful to yoga teachers
- Demonstrate anatomical position.
- Perform and identify the movements that are possible in the three planes.

Yes Rachel! A few months ago I sent out a little prayer, wishing there was a way I could attend your anatomy teachings (I think I saw a clip of you giving a lecture) and here you are! I actually spotted these modules at DYWM a little while ago and earmarked them for some revision/ new insights. This was fab, I'm not sure I can go over this stuff enough really. I'm looking forward to learning more in the other modules. Ps You: "If we can just nerd out for a little bit..." Me: "Let's go!" 🤓 Thank you xx

Hey! thank you for those great and informative videos! I love them! I'd like to ask you a question and to hear your opinion - if as a yoga teacher you will never use those terms of planes and locators such as anterior and posterior, why do you think the students in the YTT need to learn about it? thank you so much again!
@RachelScottYoga
@RachelScottYoga 3 года назад
That’s a great question. And I think it’s useful for us for the same reason it’s useful for Physio‘s to know it. It’s so that we can articulate more clearly what we are doing in the human body. And have a common language to discuss and understand anatomy and movement. It’s helpful for understanding sequencing and actions too. I wouldn’t use anatomical language often in class though because it would probably get in the way of the experience.✨

Thank goodness I found your videos. I am in my YTT and the videos are painfull. Just to clarify if I am standing in a t position and I move my arms in front of me that is flexion also?

Attempting to learn the pronunciation of the 12 steps to the original Suyra Namaskar. Do you have a video of how to pronounce the asanas?🙏🏻
@RachelScottYoga
@RachelScottYoga 4 года назад
Hi Amber! I am not a sanskrit scholar, so let that be my caveat. I definitely pronounce things with an American accent. :) I don't have a specific video for that, but you may find some pronunciations through my other videos, like How To Teach Surya Namaskar in An All Levels Class: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-86lClJbsmKc.html

It’s a shame we can’t see the “action” bit of the video when you tell your students what to do, flexion, extension etc as I wasn’t sure if I was doing it right 🙈 otherwise, a great video

are there any teachers that use anitomical language during teaching a yoga class? id go to that
@RachelScottYoga
@RachelScottYoga 6 месяцев назад
Good question! I'm sure there must be some out there that do, but usually we caution people not to do it too much (or at least not without explaining it) as most people don't know it ~ they're not as nerdy as we are ;)
@lindsaycooke361

@@RachelScottYoga in art we understand that without knowledge of the body we can only copy a reference when drawing something. this kind of seems like the same thing could apply here. we can only copy a teacher in yoga unless they teach us what is really going on, only then do we have real choice to think for ourselves. so it kind of seems unfair to learn all of this then deny the students the depth of knowledge during a class. everyones personality is different and it feels wrong to assume that people don't want different experience and to think people are uninterested. it would feel more meaningful and grounded in reality if anatomical terms were used in a class.

why is rasing your arms above your head a flexion?? not like the elbows where extention is arms straight, and flexion is arms bent, the shoulders are bent both when they're flexed and extended. why?
@RachelScottYoga

Flexion of the shoulder ~ closes the front of the shoulder joint. Just the naming convention.

Yes, correct! If you are standing in anatomical position and reach arms, for that is flexing at the shoulders
