Have you feeling like your fuse is a little short lately?
PLEASE READ FIRST!
Anger is often labeled as a negative emotion and because of that we are not always taught from a young age how to experience and express anger in a healthy way.
The first part of this practice is not ideal if you have unmedicated high blood pressure, very low blood pressure, glaucoma, are pregnant or recovering from severe covid. It requires rapid strong breathing and movement which can make you lightheaded. You are welcome to attempt it by slowing down the breath and shaking movements.
Anger is a protective emotional response to a situation. It tells us a lot about our values, boundaries and pain if we can hold enough space to listen. Because it serves a protective function it activates a fight or flight response in the body. A lot of energy is suddenly released in the nervous system for us to move and run if needed. This means that our capacity for decision making is affected, as our amygdala is more active than our frontal cortex. In short, we don’t see the full picture and are prone to misinterpreting what is happening. Especially if what we are facing is not an actual lion or immediate physical danger.
A good strategy is to first allow for feeling the anger and moving the body to ‘spend’ the energy. Once it is spent, taking time to move slow and catch your breath will help the rational part of your brain come back online. From there you can take a moment to honor what your anger has shown you and decide on what action is best to continue with. In some situations that might be to move more, get out of the house to blow off some steam. Or perhaps you need to talk to someone for advice.
Anger is healthier when owned, because then it is on our power to change what doesn't work for us. This does not mean feeling angry all the time, but rather recognizing our responsibility for managing how we feel as a first step.
Take the time to assess what it is really happening. Our feelings are always true relative to our own values, beliefs and situation, but are not always the whole picture. Here is a writing or contemplation exercise you can try to uncover what is on your heart.
I feel angry because *this happened*.
I feel abandoned / unseen / alone / hurt or whatever comes up for you.
Then consider the following questions:
- Do I know all there is to know about this?
- Could there be another explanation?
- Could I find out more information? (if you feel unsure)
- What might the other person be carrying that I do not know about?
- Could I have a conversation about it?
- What can I do for myself to nurture the part of me that feels upset?
- Do I feel ready to take action on this now or is it better to wait for when I am more grounded?
It is best suited to smaller misunderstandings. It is not meant for situations where you have been directly physically harmed or as a continuing pattern of verbal emotional abuse. Or as part of greater structural social injustice. In that case, please find yourself a place of safety and reach out for help. You can use this list if you are in Namibia - ndapewoshaliwr...
I really hope this helps you consider your anger in a new light. If you have not worked with your anger in this way before it might take some time and support from a friend or a professional. Allow yourself to stay compassionate and curious and you will find a way!

This has been so helpful to me. The second time I had just finished doing this, I discovered the anger was to protect my inner child who is very precious, pure, innocent, curious, intuitive and very senstive, who was being taken for granted and was made to feel worthless and wrong. Thank you so much!

Thank you! I have been stuck on how to healthily express some anger, especially in my journey to break familial cycles that are full of anger, and this was great.

Very helpful, thank you! I never learned that I am safe to express healthy anger so I have been the good girl/woman all my life. It has made me avoid conflicts and suppress all anger only for it to build up and up on the inside. Learning to feel it in a healthy way and communicate when something has upset me.

I have always been suppressing anger most of the time (grew up with a very angry father so it makes sense to me the way I am). Did therapy (IFS), read loads of books, etc. And actually learned that when we suppress anger it takes out energy which can lead to depression. Like any other emotion (sadness, guilt, fear, etc.) anger needs to be honoured, expressed in a healthy way. We need to work with our anger, accept it, validate it. On the other hand lot of people can be overwhelmed by their anger. Have outbursts, be violent etc. In summary, every emotion needs to be expressed, validated and honoured. Often we have to look at our childhood and identify our relationship with emotions, which ones we were suppressing or by which ones we were overwhelmed.

Hi, you are so right that suppressing anger can lead to other things. When I took the time to unwrap my anger, I found so much sadness underneath it all as well. Anything we repress will leave us feeling disconnected I have found, whether it be fear, anger & sadness. Learning to honor all these messengers to better take care of myself has been an important learning and life skill to develop. Hope you are doing well on your journey of learning, growing and healing!

@@liezlhovingyogahi, i had a lot of sexual abuse on and off for over a year in my youth from a boy i considered a romantic person at the time. i also received sexual abuse from a girl who i thought was a close friend for many years. this was done in my sleep. i was very angry without realising and damaged my relationship with myself through disconnecting from my ability to truly feel. i felt numb and still often do around the solar plexus area. i don’t feel mine was a state of loss, but rather the lack of control i had at the time when these things happened to me. so i’ve been struggling to get rid of this

Just wanted to thank you for this practice. My first foray into weekend yoga (I’m a weekday exerciser and weekend relaxer usually) but I’m perimenopausal and have been feeling crunchy by the time Monday comes around… then today Saturday morning when I ought to be full of the joys of the weekend.. I found myself i an internal rage… rationally I know it’s just hormones but I had to deal with it and this was just what I needed to get through the rest of the day without impacting my undeserving family.. thank you thank you thank you 🙏🏻💜

This was a really incredibly helpful practice. Wow, did I feel that sadness deep inside. I started crying. My anger has been trying to protect a small, longing, misunderstood, betrayed and abandoned version of myself. I am doing a lot of work to honor, show up for, sit with, validate, all of those difficult experiences. I will return to this practice again. Thank you

My anger has been very destructive, and has been destroying me in many different ways, especially physically in terms of having leaky gut, and gastritis, and a hiatal hernia, my anger has been a major problem. I’ve played a major role in creating these diseases also.

Anger can be destructive in so many ways to get our attention. Hoping that you are finding ways to take care of yourself with compassion as you untangle patterns, habits and beliefs that contribute to all you are experiencing. It might not always be an easy journey, but I do believe us all capable of finding the medicine within us that helps us to move forward 🌈

Hopefully this gave you some tools to feel it from a place of safety. The journey is never simple straightforward, but it helps a lot if we can have compassion for ourselves along the way and soften the parts that feel tough. Wishing you well as you honor all you feel 🌸

Thank you for this 💓 I am looking for somatic healing practices to release anger from the pelvis specifically (sexual trauma, chronic pain) - do you know where I can find more information on this?

Hi Samantha. Really glad to hear this video was useful to you. For pain in the pelvis, I recommend looking up Steffi von Brunner - steffivonbrunner.com/pelvic-health-coaching/. Right now I can't recommend anyone specifically for healing sexual trauma, but will keep looking and share here when I find something worthwhile

Hope you've found something helpful & easeful. Leslie Huddart has a great lil meditation to connect with our centre of gravity ... Our pelvic bowl. Leslie guides us to Sweep it clear & ground ourselves in it. She often offers freebies -that's how I got that one. I forget her exact name of website ... "the Wisdom Academy" or "EmbodiedWisdom"? If you google Leslie Huddart you'll find her.
