This. It's one of the reasons I couldn't get into Ruyi as I couldn't believe the premise of it. There is no evidence (that I found) that the Emperor ever loved Ruyi. She was a duty, nothing more. I would have much rather had a story where Ruyi loved the Emperor but he never loved her. Tragedy all around.

@@lindsiria but he didn't love her the way she did in the slightest, I actually think it's pretty accurate tbh they must have known each other as kids given her aunt was the empress and he had to have been fond of her to have promoted her so many times with no kids at that time. Heck even their honeymoon was longer than his first one. Qianlong seemed like a strange guy tho

@@lindsiria I think any man in ancient Chinese, much less a powerful one such as an emperor, would take any affection or admiration they have for a woman as a sign of love. “You are beautiful, I love you”, “You dance so well, I love you”,… because in their mind, ‘their love’ do not need to be eternal, faithful or even exclusive. They can love many women at the same time, and they can love for any length of time that suits them. Their love may last for years for one person, but may be just few months for another.

@@lindsiria In the show or reality? Well, in reality of course most marriages are for power and alliances. Almost no leaders ever loved eachother. As for the show, I think the premise that she loves him, and he loves her, but he stops respecting her and seeing her as a person and her love for him slowly dying, is actually very powerful to watch. They simply become different people, and I'd say she stops loving him, or at least has serious doubts, quite quickly.

@@Ginizhu Something was going on to have Qianlong (irl) wipe her from history. However, I love that the show actually has Ruyi *take herself back* from history since she never wanted any of it to begin with. You can see this when she cuts herself out of the painting as if to say "i don't belong to you anymore" When the Emperor (in the show) gives the order to wipe Ruyi from history, I almost feel like he's finally listening to her, and giving her what she wants. Because as she says in the show, he only ever cares AFTER he's lost someone.

I watched the chinese version first and I was so in love with the drama!! Even IU can't me make prefer the korean version (Although it's good too). But the chinese's one is just so so much better 😍

It's not quite ' brotherly ' according to Western understanding. You know even a girlfriend uses the word ' Ge Ge' for his boyfriend until they get married. In many BL manhwa, you can see the supposed lovers calling each other ' Hyung ' but it doesn't mean that they consider each other as ' brothers' in Western sense.

@@shalinitiwariscorner5210 Calling someone " Ge" is not about romance. Well, this is not BL universe; it's thecworld of chinese cultural sphere. In collective societies like Chinese, we relate ourselves to people around us to create sense of kinship (and thus it will be easier to depend on/ask helps from one another). "Ge" itself means brother. We call our blood brother "Ge." So, we also call elder males whose ages are not so different from the speakers "brother" to bond w/ them. Like I address my neighbor's gay son "brother" even he's not my blood brother, a relative, nor a love interest. In western standard, this guy is either my neighbor or childhood friend. But in my society, I'll be called rude and haughty if I don't respectfully call him "brother" according to his seniority and his biological sex - not his preferred sexuality. Of course, if he ever wanted me to call him sister, I'd oblige. But he never says so and seems very fine with being called "brother" because it connotes that I, a junior, give him proper respect. It's just collective-society cultural thing. Romance is not the main issue; but the due respect and etiquette.

Speculation here but the 13th brother sounds like his love child with his father’s concubine. I can see how that would piss off the father/emperor and thus punish him for being born of an affair between his son and concubine.

The older brother probably fathered him with his father’s concubine.

According to historical documents, Qing emperors' family lives are a lot more "business" like, almost void of scandals shown in these dramas. Early Qing rulers adopted a lot of their traditional marriage customs which are quite shocking for common Han population. To faithfully depict court affairs would not appeal to most us contemporaries. Having said that, I am more inclined to believe she was a strong woman who was not afraid to confront her husband in their family affairs like getting another mistress/wife etc., and Qianlong's ego would not tolerate such moral/authoritative lectures.

@@sigyul2283 the rumour was she had a fight with the Emperor and cut her hair in front of him which was a huge taboo. There are speculations on why she did it, but nothing really confirm, except that she cut her hair in huge disrespect and he basically ignored her from then on.

@@flysmask I can only speculate two things that can push a woman to such extreme act like cutting her hair, she got humiliated or her sons got punished, since we know the second one is not true, it's very likely the first case. It is rumored that she scolded the emperor not to accept a Han mistress, as it's against the imperial court tradition, which the emperor did not appreciate. Being a strong woman, I could imagine she argued with him forcefully, resulting in a shocking act to show her indignation.
