Yoopers talk about what it means to live in the Upper Peninsula

Upper Peninsula

We now know the definition of the word "Yooper" but do we really know what it means to be a Yooper. A quick trip through town revealed a variety of interpretations.
For those that don't know what Yooper means. They can look it up. The Merriam Webster Dictionary added it to its dictionaries this month.

I was raised up in Northern Wisconsin, I loved it. I used to go to the UP to look for moose sheds as a kid, just a pretty damn majestic place. Lake superior is amazing, I feel guilty for not raising my kids there, we live in Texas now & they only have a few more years of school but it has weighed on my mind alot as they get older. Thanks for posting

I just moved back to Michigan at age 54 . My parents divorced when I was 12 and moved my siblings and I to Texas . I was NOT happy about it and it took me a lifetime to get back . The UP is a favorite destination for myself and my grown children. A beautiful place.

I will *attempt* to make this comment as brief as possible, but bear with me. I'm originally from the Gainesville, Florida area and moved up to Escanaba around 20 years ago. My brother and his wife and kids were living there and he swore I'd love it. So I went up there on a whim, and he was right. It was Heaven on earth, at least to me. I absolutely *LOVED* the cold weather and the snow. I was there for around 6 months (during the winter), and then I had some things going on back home so I had to return to Florida. I was able to return to Escanaba about a year later. I was only able to be there for several months (once again, it was during the winter) before I had to, once again, return to Florida. I always swore I would one day return to the U.P. Well, flash forward 17 years (approximately) and I did just that. Only this time, I was married and had three young kids. My wife had never been north of Tennessee and my kids had never been north of Georgia. Needless to say, they had never seen snow in their entire lives. It took me several years to convince my wife that a move to the U.P. would be a great thing for our family, but I finally managed to convince her! We arrived in Marquette County on April 1st, 2016. The weather forecast was calling for around a half inch of snow that first night. We awoke to around 10 inches instead! My wife and kids were in Heaven! The next night we were supposed to get a full inch of snow and ended up with around 16 inches! That wound up being an extremely snowy April, and we were loving every minute of it. In addition to all the great weather (I realize most Yoopers don't share our opinion of snow! LOL) we experienced that first spring in the U.P., we also experienced unbelievable hospitality, generosity, and kindness. Obviously, I had explained to my wife and kids just how hospitable and kind Yoopers were long before we made the trek up here. But our new neighbors greatly exceeded my family's expectations. My wife had initially agreed to a "move" to the U.P. on one condition - that if she was not happy here, we would move back to Florida. She was going to give it a full year up here, just to make sure she gave it a fair shake. Well, after our first day here, she decided this is where she wants to spend the rest of her life. I did everything in my power to remind her that she had not experienced a single winter here. As I told her, if you think we got a lot of snow in April, just wait until you see what January and February are like! Understand that I was *not* trying to talk her out of wanting to live her permanently. I just didn't want her to get our kids and my hopes up for something that could literally change with the weather. Her mind was made up, though, and she insisted that this is where we were destined to live. That didn't hurt my feelings! Three years later, she (and the rest of us) are still just as obsessed with our "new" home as we were the day we arrived back in April of 2016. In fact, we were so impressed with our new neighbors and friends that I felt compelled to write a book about our experiences here. The book is titled: - Yooper Hospitality - "Northern Nice" in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is available on Amazon in both eBook and paperback form. It's also available in the Meijer store in Marquette. It's technically in the "Michigan Fair" store (located inside Meijer). I will drop the Amazon link below for those who may be interested in the book. If you live near the Marquette area and would like me to sign your copy of my book, let me know and I'd be happy to meet up somewhere and do that for you. Thank you in advance, everybody! -Adam Reed (Link below) www.amazon.com/dp/179326533X/ref=nav_timeline_asin?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I just got done driving from sault st Marie to green Bay and had to go through the upper penninsula. I had no idea it was so remote up there. beautiful state, but was almost as remote feeling as the trip through ontario. I did see a cop helping someone changing a flat tire on their trailer. I have never seen a cop do that before.

I am a Yooper born n raised and I am now 67 yrs old. I grew up around Munising and have lived in Marquette and now Negaunee. And at the ripe old age of 67 I am STILL amazed at the U.P! The beauty, the sheer cleaniliness of the environment, the Northern Lighrs (!), and countless other things still keep me awestruck. Just the Great Lakes alone is enough to make me sit back and wonder why I was SO lucky to have been raised and still living here.
