How is the rental market out there? I really want to give Marquette a go this summer but not sure how I will afford to pay rent with a regular job. Where I live it is impossible to afford rent even making 18 dollars an hour.

@@collinmc90 The rental market is somewhat competitive and it's getting harder every year to find affordable housing. However, there are other towns nearby (within 10 miles) that are much more affordable. And if you are resourceful, you get a yurt and a plot of land.

My Dad was stationed at Kincheloe AFB, close to Sault St. Marie from 1961 - 1963 when I was in the 8th and 9th grades. I went to Rudyard Jr./Sr. High School and just loved the UP of Michigan. We moved all of the way up there from Homestead AFB, below Miami....in the month of October of all times...! One year, Rudyard High played Marquette in basketball and we drove to Marquette for the game. As we drove the highway by Lake Superior, I was astonished and entranced to see the lake frozen into snowcapped waves. I was astounded looking at all of the wild, raw beauty. The UP of Michigan is the most beautiful place I have ever lived and I envy anyone who grew up and lived there or just moved up and stayed there. I, for one, would treasure the clean, beautiful, area with the changes of the seasons far more than any "well-paying job". Living simply like that amongst such beauty would be more than enough for me. In the meantime, I'm in north central Florida which has it's own beauty but no seasons to speak of. I have been here ever since my Dad retired from the Air Force in 1964. At 74 and a widow, this is where I will stay and just remember the best time of my life living in the UP of Michigan.

You mentioned the brutal Winters. Having been raised in the upper peninsula I can confirm this. One advantage to that is the automotive testing you spoke about. After working in that field in the upper peninsula for approximately 5 years I can say that the extreme weather allows the manufacturers the ability to do cold weather and durability testing relativity close to the factory. This saves time and resources over having to ship cars/trucks along with engineering and support personnel to places like Sweden. Which has been done in the past. Congratulations Marquette for getting this exciting opportunity to help develope tomorrow's transportation. Nice video too. Wish you could have shown the black rocks on Superior. Maybe another time. Keep up the good work.

My dad grew up in Marquette, we go there about 3 times a year. Marquette in the summer is incredible. You can go cliff jumping off black rocks, scale a few mountains, take a walk through an eternal amount of woods and trials. If you go to pictured rocks a quick 40 minutes out, you might mistake Lake Superior with the Caribbean!

I live in Gladstone, about 60 miles from Marquette. We moved up here in 1979 and didn't even go back downstate for trips after the first year or two. It's amazingly beautiful, clean, has the friendliest people and it's awesome to raise kids, ours are still in the U.P. with their kids. If you want big city action, noise, filth then you probably wouldn't like it but for everyone else it's wonderful. It would have been nice if the Presque Isle road had been open for you, and I know you can't cover everything but there is much more beauty there and all over the U.P. to be seen. There are smaller towns, scenic waterfalls and other spots, other things to see everywhere you go in the U.P., all clean. We're 3 blocks from Lake Michigan, also wonderful. We have some very good medical centers, the largest right in Marquette, but everyone's covered. High paying jobs are scarce, but there are plenty of jobs for average people who want to live a simpler/cleaner life. I grew up in Detroit in the 50's then we lived 50 miles north till we moved up here. As far as the winters--if you love outdoor winter sports you're in heaven and if you don't,, like me, you have a nice long relaxing inside season to recoup for the next spring/summer/fall activities. We have all the huge equipment and know how for winter road maintenance, and if you have a front wheel drive with good tires or an SUV, it's no problem normally. We do have snow storms that will tie things up for a day or two sometimes, but personally--I will take them over hurricanes, tsunamis, tornadoes (very rare here, 3 that I know of since 1979), earthquakes, mudslides, killing level heatwaves, and enormous forest fires. Also--no poisonous snakes, sharks, larger than hand size spiders and disgusting bugs. It's a good life up here!

Which area would you recommend for *affordable* modest homestead for a young family? We would like enough acreage for homesteading (at least 10 acres, but more is always better). While we don’t mind being pretty isolated, being on the grid for electricity would be nice. Any thoughts?

I worked at the best 3 story bar there called 'Scarlet O'hara's', was the head night cook in the basement restaurant there called 'Jays Alley & Grog'. Some interesting places to visit if you ever go there are the Marquette Courthouse where they filmed court scenes from the movie 'Anatomy of a Murder' with James Stewart. I always enjoy the drive thru Presque Isle Park and Zoo and the black rock cliffs there, Sugarloaf Mountain is highly rewarding and scenic. They're not as brutal as you might think. The water acts like a thermal mass and its slows and moderates the seasons. Cool in the summer like the water, warm in the winter like the water. I live at the tip of the mitten near the straits right near the lake. We hardly get snow and we're zone 5b vs Gaylord of the Interior of the UP which are 3b/a and get dozen+ feet of snow.

Marquette is a beautiful town! I like how it looks like so many people are biking or walking and how many cars have bikes and kayaks on them! I'd love to visit the UP sometime. Also, I knew it was isolated, but I definitely didn't realize just how far it was from the nearest town - that would drive me crazy! It sure makes me laugh at the people near me who complain there's nothing to do around here when we're only one hour from two major cities!

I was at KI Sawyer in the early 70's. What I found about the winters: Snow removal was ALWAYS quick an efficient. Not so many roads so not so many delays in having easy drives to just about anywhere. Also, snow removal from my base housing was a snap. The individual who drove the plow just drove down the row of houses, in their front yards. Plenty of parking followed.

Marquette must stay right on the snow removal. You head west over in and around Bessemer and Wakefield the road and stop signs are 8 to 10 feet high. Love the scenery, never been down town and usually head down 28.

Yeah...but...Sheboygan ain't such a bad place either. I go THERE...from Milwaukee...when I want to "get away from it all!" If it wasn't so hard to make a living there, I would have stayed.

AMAZING tour of Marquette! I've been intrigued with that place ever since I took a circle tour around Lake Michigan (and a small part of the south shore of Lake Superior). Our college-aged kayaking guides at Pictured Rocks spoke highly of Marquette. Definitely need to make it there sometime! Only minor nitpick is I wish you'd talk about the buildings more. There were a few really interesting structures on Washington that I'd like to know about. I guess I'll look them up on my own. Anyway, great video!

@@emu5088 Don't know the building at 4:27 too well but it has a few businesses in it; 8:14 is the courthouse; 8:34 is the post office/courthouse, yes a second courthouse; 8:38 is the city hall building; 8:45 not sure what it was historically but it is now pretty much an office building with some law offices I think; 11:06 the Delft Theater used to be a movie theater but has been since renovated into a restaurant that you can watch classic movies while eating; 11:24 right side is the oldest bank in town which is currently a Flagstar Bank and the left side is a few local businesses; 11:30 is mostly an office building at this point, sorry unsure of the historical aspect; 11:43 is two restaurants, upper floor is Sol Azteca a mexican place and the bottom floor is Iron Bay Restaurant and Drinkery more of a pub type place. My mother watched your videos & liked them a lot but don’t take offense but she said she wish you would show more of the side pictures of homes & things. She felt like you were going to fast & the camera was just straight ahead & she couldn’t see much of the area. Anyway we both enjoyed them & this place is beautiful. The winters are a killer & you need a good friend or mate to spend time with or you’ll go nuts!

Your video brings up some valid points to consider but as a young man I feel up to the challenge.
