York is England's finest example of a medieval town, so well preserved that it has become one of the world's most interesting historic cities, with a rich mix of activities for the visitor. This fortified town is surrounded by high stone walls that protected it from attackers in the past and then from modernization. The walls, dating to the Middle Ages and still 95 percent intact, are nearly three miles long, making it the nation's longest continuous stretch of medieval fortifications. A hundred other towns in Great Britain had fortified walls, but only York has such a grand state of preservation. Moreover, it is the only place where the walls were constructed on top of an earthen mound, making them that much more imposing.
In all of Europe there are only a few medieval walled towns standing today, such as Rhodes in Greece, Carcassonne in France, and York. The fortified walls played several very important roles in creating these miracles of preservation: Because the walls were built to protect the town by keeping out the enemy, the space within the walls was extremely valuable and fully developed with a dense concentration of buildings, narrow lanes and no wasted space, creating a fascinating urban pattern that is great fun to explore today. The walls also controlled trade by preventing smuggling, enabling the government to place a tax on goods that came through the gateways and generating revenues for the town to prosper. The same walls have kept modern construction out and made York a time capsule of the Middle Ages.

Behind the row of medieval cottages at 15.00 is perhaps my favourite place in all of York. Pass through the narrow gateway to the left of the buildings, leave behind the touristy bustle and enter a marvellous oasis of calm - the church and churchard of Holy Trinity, Goodramgate. Stand in the tiny walled churchyard with its grass, trees, bushes, ancient gravestones and the tower of York Minster looming behind and be transported back to the 15C (and earlier). A wonderful spot.

Warwick has recently passed away and I attended his funeral at York Minster earlier today. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

+Philip Croft Dear me--how terrible, I had just written a compliment to him above, saying how I wished I had met him a few years ago when I stayed there for a couple of weeks, and hoped to do so soon. What was the cause of death--in such a young and apparently fit man ?

@@stevelynn2092 Mr Burton was at the centre of national media attention in 1997, when a Sunday newspaper reported that he was running heritage walks aimed at adults and children, despite having been jailed for nine months in the 1980s for sexually abusing four boys. Further concerns were raised around him running evening classes. The former British Rail manager had become a teacher for the Workers’ Educational Association, which organised adult evening classes across York and North Yorkshire. Head teachers at the two York schools said they had been unaware of his criminal background.

Beautiful! Let's not forget , the streets would be covered in dirt, mud, both animal and human feces and the smell would be unbearable. That was a fact of life. Now we are left with the beauty and the romantic idea of those times. Reality....much different.

I don't think they are 95% intact??? There are really large gaps in sections
@denniscallan
@denniscallan 6 лет назад
Oh really? Have you measured them? I just did and found the walls are largely intact, just missing about 10% in one section between Navigation Road and Peasholme Green, so maybe not quite 95% but pretty close...the walls are amazing.
@YorkyOne
@YorkyOne 4 года назад
@@denniscallan The missing section you describe actually never had any walls. The Normans dammed the River Foss in this area to create a large lake known as the King's Fishpool. As it made this section secure from attack there was no need to build walls. Small sections of the city walls were demolished in the 18C but an outcry from the townspeople put a stop to further losses. Your 95% sounds about right.

The public toilets in York are absolutely appalling especially the Bootham Bar one and right up too the Fossgate public toilet behind Fenwicks, the people are dim-witted though there are some who are okay. It has ONE good shop in "Van Mildert's" and would recommend you go to the much cleaner and friendlier Leeds.
