Definition of Morris Dancing is the English middle classes making a fool of themselves.

I'm sorry to criticize an otherwise great video, but the 'crude steam engine' (3.49) is Stevenson's 'Rocket' the locomotive that provided the template for steam locomotives for the rest of the Steam Age. It is a monument in it's own right.

Nice video. Just to clarify however that Morris Dancers are not traditional in York, theyre just a tourist thing. I was born and bred in York and never saw them in my 30 or more years living there.

So you've lived there 30 years and never seen the morris dancers who regularly dance in the town center. Have you ever left your house?

Agreed Septic - morris dancers are more of a Southern thing generally- London, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Kent, Cotswold etc. But when these things crop up now, we don't necessarily assume it has to be a local thing but an icon of English folk culture. As York itself is such an icon on old Englishness, it wouldn't be surprising to occasionally see morris dancers there although York isn't just a quaint old tea shop and pub city (although it is a very beautiful old city) but there's the chocolate, railway, and some hi tech industries- that's what I love about York which you don't get in some old places - it feels thriving in the now and some of the outskirts are often fairly pretty too.

@@Picnicl many Morris dancing styles are native to the pit villages of north east England including York like the sword dances

When I was a kid in the 80s I would see Morris dancers in York city centre every weekend when I went shopping with my mum. Literally every weekend.

@@richadambudgen7520 I pre-date that slightly. Never saw them. There's no historical heritage of them in York. It was more of a Southern England thing. The only Yorkshire tradition is the Long Sword Dance which isnt even a York thing.
