Yoshi's Story is a side-scrolling platform game published and developed by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It was first released in Japan in December 1997, and worldwide the following year. It was re-released on the Wii's Virtual Console service in 2007, and later for the Wii U's Virtual Console in 2016.

I had this game when I was little...one day I got bored of it and sold it, I wanted the money so I could buy a different game... I was such an idiot, 8 years have passed since I played that game but now I bought it again and I swear I will never lose it again! Anyways I want to say: Don't sell your games if you are tired of them, keep them! Some day you'll try them again and have a lot of fun. Sorry for my bad english

I used to do that. Kinda comes across as ungrateful cause alot of my games were gifts. When I was old enough to get a job I started to miss those games and replaced them.

I feel as if Yoshi's Story is underrated. Even if it is short it was always a blast to play as a child, especially around Christmas one year and I still get the same enjoyment playing it now as an adult.

It was a bit lame though. Yoshies island was so much more polished

Its short length is comparable to an actual pop-up book: cute and a very quick read. The progression is weird though... Instead of reaching the end of a level, you had to eat 30 fruits... but since the 30 melons are what give more points, wouldn't that scavenger hunt work much better as a side mission, while actually reaching for an end goal? I mean, it's different and a bit innovative, yeah, but that means you might never even see half of the level of an already short game. With the Flower Petals being health, the 3 Special Hearts and 30 Melons, you'd have something comparable to the Stars for the Countdown Timer, the 5 Special Flowers and 20 Red Coins from Yoshi's Island! It's a direct parallel for the side missions for the level's score! But that's not even the weirdest thing! You only play 6 stages, one per Chapter, and there can be from 1 to 4 stages to choose from, depending of the number of Special Hearts you found on the previous Chapter... but, why? Is each stage increasingly harder within each Chapter? Does it yield more Mood Points? Not that it matters much, that only makes the ending SLIGHTLY different... The way this game advances doesn't make much sense. Why not having to play through every level of each chapter? You read every page of the book to understand the story, you don't skip pages!

I absolutely enjoyed this game as a kid back in the 90's. And still do today. I have tons of fun going for those high scores and hearing the noises Yoshi makes. And I felt the music was what defined it. Yoshi is an incredibly cute character, and this game had us play through a story book involving just him.

I feel like people didn't understand this game in the same way that I did. I loved this game from the first moment I read about it. I preordered the game and bought it with my own hard earned young teen money. I loved the style of the game and embraced the concept that this was a skill based time trial game. It is built right into the menus... The game has unlimited replayability. You are constantly trying to beat your previous score and time. There is the metagame of attempting to get nothing but the melons which are pretty well hidden in some cases. The story was interesting and the cut scenes added to the fun.
@BigBoy257

Exactly! It’s got a great gameplay loop of constantly trying to improve your score. And honestly, while this game be unbearably cute, how could you hate the game for that? The game is so innocent, I don’t know how anyone could possibly hate it
@LuizFRocha

Beat previous score is no use in a single player game when you don't unlock trophy, bonus or secret content. Unless you are a tryhard Yoshi 64 player in late 90 and Early 2000... This game was such a disappointment compared to Yoshi's Island and Mario 2D Games in geral.. Too Easy and Short. 100% game is only Six Worlds with 4 Levels. And a Normal Run only 6 Levels. Yoshi's Island had the perfect ammont of challenge and Content without treat the player like a infant retard. I fell cheated when i Bought N64 with Yoshi Story and finished the game in one Hour with a explosion of hearts. No wonder why PlayStation destroyed N64 back in the day Note 4/10

I remember getting this game for Christmas and beating it by new years and never touched it again until a few years later. A buddy came over and he saw it there and asked if I ever found black or white yoshi or found shy guys or a handful of other little secrets the game had to offer. We spent the rest of the night basically 100% the game and since then I look back fondly on it and pick it up occasionally to play.

This was one of my very first experiences with video games as a kid, aside from my dad's super mario on the NES and other platformers like Banjo Kazooie or Mario 64. I really did genuinely love this game and it certainly does hit a part of my heart and "childhood feels" when ever I think about it or see it. I remember borrowing that game from a friend. He and I would exchange games for a given period of time (1 month), and so I lent him Diddy Kong Racing for one month and had Yoshi's Story from him. Since I had this game for a limited time (and not dozens of them in my not-so-rich home), I remember I took the time to complete every single level eating only melons (which can be difficult sometimes) and unlocking the black and white Yoshi. I'll agree that the game is not very challenging nor rewarding, but I remember it took some time and a lot of patience to 100% complete (well that's how I remember it - it's been a while) and at that time, I found it very interesting. A game that requires patience. I just wish it would have rewarded said patience... Also, I wasn't repelled by the cuteness, but I understand it can get on people's nerves.

My dad was a slight gamer but as a single parent we struggled to have many luxuries. When we didn't have cable and getting a computer was too expensive, I grew up with things like Mario 64, Smash bros melee, and Yoshis story. Just as cliche as it could get, I this game for Christmas one day and as soon as I saw what it was I put it into the console. I remember playing for hours struggling to get to the end of levels, loving it when I got new ones, and getting a Mt Everest size of joy when I beat a boss. I loved this game when I was little, but I also hadn't come in with any past knowledge of Yoshi's island. I actually enjoyed the cutesy style, but I was also like 7 or so when I had it. Even more so though I loved the things you came across on the adventure, like the bone dragons, the giant hungry fish, the sky snake, that snow genie thing, and similar monsters and weird things. When I did play the Yoshi's island GBA port years later I enjoyed that one much more than Yoshi's story, and looking back I can see why many were disappointed that Yoshi's next game was a little too different. I've also got to say I love a single longer and more solid adventure than those branching path games like Yoshi's story and starfox64. Still I enjoyed Yoshi's Story a good bit. It felt like a bit more of a playful and open take on the traditional platformer, and it was something quite interesting.

I must have been 7 when I got this game and I think I had a pretty irrational amount of love for it. Most of this relates back to the rich graphics and well-made sprites, probably. The way the game controlled, the nice music and pacing of the levels kept me coming back for a long while.

I always felt Yoshi's Story was as easy as the player wanted the game to be. If one wanted to just grab every fruit in sight, sure the game is a breeze. However, if one wants to try to grab all the melons in a stage and as many coins as possible in every single stage...suddenly you have a fairly challenging game. To this day there are some of the melon mini-games that I can't finish perfectly, especially the box races and flutter jump ones.

+N64 Glenn Plant you are missing the entire point of the game. the fun thing was to find and collect all the light green melons. If you eat other fruits then it's pretty useless and way too easy. Also, the Yoshis do have different abilities. The yellow yoshi loves bananas, the green one loves melons, etc. and the white and black one are not effected by peppers i believe - being secret characters they could also eat any fruit and be happy , but i dont quite remember that one.

So I'm a new fan of yours Glenn, as I'm sure you can tell by my recent bout of comments on a few of your reviews. Since you always ask to tell you how WE feel about things, I just do as you ask. So here's what I think about Yoshi's Story. Yes, just like you, I was expecting a proper follow-up to Yoshi's Island. One with plenty of levels, lots of content, and a lot of Mario flavor. I bought it at full price thinking it would be a good game, and it was a purchase I regretted a lot. I didn't even make it past the first LEVEL before I realized something was wrong. Admittedly, this DID happen during my "depression" phase, but even so Yoshi's Story just seemed unbelievably lacking, like a half-baked game trying to pass as a full one. I still played it all the way through and gave it a few more chances, but about a year later I sold it at a garage sale. Having said that, I've actually considered picking it up again, either via the N64 cartridge or via Virtual Console. Why? Two reasons. The first is that I watched a review a few years ago by goemon047 that made me think twice about how I felt. He had the same experience as most other players, being bothered that it was so easy, and he actually tried to trade it in the SAME DAY he bought it. What's weird though is that after he traded it in, he actually found himself REGRETTING it, and occasionally I've felt that way too. The thing is that Yoshi's Story IS absurdly easy, but if you actually MAKE it more challenging by trying to unlock the White and Black Yoshis, collect all of the hearts, and more importantly collect all 30 melons in each stage, it actually becomes very tough. So yeah, it's not a game for everyone, but it's a game that everyone can make as challenging as they like. Be a casual gamer and just eat the first 30 fruit you find in each level finishing the game in an hour, or go for the additional content and make it into something more complex. It's up to you, and in a way, maybe that's the game's charm. The second thing is that I've learned an important lesson about gaming since the days I played Yoshi's Story: you should NEVER allow expectations to ruin a game for you. When you do that, you close your mind to new and interesting experiences. It took me a long time to learn this, but if a game is boring me within the first few minutes, I've taught myself to push through it. Because more often than not, I find that I just have to adjust my mindset to appreciate what I'm getting. Dead Space was a game I was expecting to be VERY different from the way it turned out, and I was very disappointed when I initially started playing it, but since I could see the potential for something technically good, I pushed through it. On the other side of that effort, I found arguably the best survival horror experience I've ever had. So now that I've learned that lesson, I find myself looking at Yoshi's Story and asking myself whether my mindset was just wrong when I played it. Instead of looking at it as a really anemic Yoshi's Island follow-up, maybe I should look at it as a completely different beast. Disregarding the mechanic of eating fruit to finish a stage, the level designs are varied in a similar way to the best Mario platformers, the graphics are pretty impressive even today, and there IS challenge there if you want to go for it. I haven't decided whether I'll re-purchase yet, but the fact that it disappointed me so much and I'm even CONSIDERING a re-buy is telling itself. That's my take on it at least. :)

Yoshi Story is one of my fondest 64 titles. As a child I enjoyed the sweetness of it but now it is pretty vomit inducing haha. It had great sound and visuals. It is easy, but there’s a lot of replayability through stage exploration. There’s even secrets: didn’t you ever find the white and black yoshi?! Their eggs were hidden in certain levels and each had a unique power and voice.

I actually like Yoshi Story. Yes there's hardly any challenge and its short but I didn't mind that, its because it was short and simple that I like it (and its the first time I remember hearing Yoshi actually speak and not just make noises like in Mario Kart 64 and other older titles with Yoshi in them). I actually think the game is more like an arcade game, its all about the scores and not the length or difficulty of the game. I don't remember ever getting good scores but I still enjoy the music, the aesthetics and even the cutesy stuff. My biggest memory is how I freaked out when I found a big white and black Yoshi egg (both by accident, I was just exploring the levels for fun and then I just found them). Anyways, I like the game, its simple to play but tough to master (in my opinion).

my story of this game is abit interesting 2 say the least. but here it goes. my first experience with this game was at a friends house. this was way after i sold my n64 2 game stop, and had a game cube. i played alot of that updated resident evil 1 game on the game cube. and i went 2 my friends alot, taking my game cube over his house while he read the map instructions 4 me, helping me get through the game. once i beat the game, he asked me if i wanted 2 play n64. when i had n64, i beat mario 64, getting all 120 stars. then i used the cannon on the outside of the castle and met yoshi on the top of the castle roof. i talked 2 him, he read a message from the makers of the game, and gave me 100 lives, telling me 2 keep playing. that was the only time i ever seen yoshi in a video game on n64. remembering him mostly from super mario world and super mario world 2: yoshi's island. so when my friend pulled out a cart which said yoshi's story on it. i was quite interested at what yoshi's first game on the n64 would be like. my friend told me it was like super mario world 2: yoshi's island. so i cringed abit, thinking at how obnoxious baby mario's crying was in yoshi's island. so now i expected the game 2 be jus like yoshi's island, only with much better graphics. he put in the cart into the n64, and turned it on. and then it happened. that music. that adorable cute music started. i fell in love with the title screen. next he started up a new game. and i was loving the graphics. i asked him> where's baby mario at?. and he said, he wasn't in this game. i was like> "thank fuck'n god!". lols. when it was my turn 2 try and play, i was handed the controller, and i became frozen. pressing random buttons, i was trying 2 figure out the weird n64 controls, cuz i was used 2 the ones in yoshi's island, on the nes controller. i jus sat back after that and let my friend play alone, while i watched. i was still in aww at the graphics of this game. and i loved how cute and adorable this game was. i wanted it. i wanted this game so fuck'n bad. then i thought maybe i could get better at it if i had it 2 play longer. latter on i got lucky and came 2 abit of money. i bought me a wii console, and a points card. i went back home, hooked up the wii, got on the nintendo e-shop on it, and looked on the e-shop list, thinking which games i wanted 2 download onto my wii. as soon as i saw yoshi's island, it was the first game i downloaded. i used up 800 points/$8 off the 2000 point/$20 card. then i noticed my mistake. i had 2 have ether a game cube or wii classic controller 2 play the darn game. so even though i had the game now, i still couldn't play it. but i din't let that get me down. latter on i got me a wii classic controller, after that a game cube controller. so that i could be ready for anything now. first game i played after getting the classic controller, was yoshi's story. once i got used 2 the controller and figured out what did what, i beat the game pretty fast. but then i played it again, and again, and i jus kept playing it. i couldn't stop playing. this game was jus 2 fuck'n fun 2 put down. i realized that this game had different paths and ways 2 beat it. sure u only needed 2 beat 6 levels 2 beat the game. but depending how u went about it, made th game replayable. not jus 4 the score and secrets, like the black and white yoshi's. but also for the different paths, that made u want 2 see what u can find the next time u went through the game. this game never got boring because it never felt the same, depending on how i went about beating it. and cuteness and fun of playing the game jus made it hard 2 put down. this was the ultimate n64 game. because u could play and play, and it was always fun and always different. i then started really wanting 2 own a physical copy of this game. i looked everywhere. but game stop stopped selling n64 games in the shops years ago. as-well as other retro games. so i then started turning 2 thrift stores and pawn shops, in order 2 find and buy my retro games. i waited and i waited, and i waited. i jus about given up any and all hope of finding a physical copy of yoshi's story. but then today was my lucky day. it was saturday. the last day the pawn shop i go 2 was open at-least until wednesday, since i cant go there on monday because of it being closed on labor day, and i couldn't go tuesday, due 2 me being stuck escorting my uncle 2 the doctor that day. but today when i went, it was open and the first thing i looked at was the n64 carts. and there, sitting up, almost calling out 2 me, was a copy in near mint condition of yoshi's story for nintendo 64. i couldn't believe it. there it was. the n64 game i been wanting for a long time. i asked how much yoshi's story was, and the guy behind the counter said> $16. i told him sold. i'll take it. so i bought this game and 2 atari 2600 games. the atari port of pacman and the coleco version of donkey kong for the atari 2600. added those 2 my ms pacman atari 2600 cart, and made a nice little display. might get more games 4 the 2600, even though i don't actually have the system. but anyway, that's my story at how i finally got my hands on a yoshi's story n64 cart.

It's a shame nobody else seems to have commented on the video. I didn;t pick up this game until about a year ago and it immediately had an irresistible charm for me. Its very colourful and has great animations I prefer to think of Yoshi's Story as a feel-good game and to me' it being a 2D sidescroller is like a bonus.

It's fun to play a couple times, but its lack of difficulty makes it difficult to really enjoy. What I would have done is change the life system for fruits, where only the fruits associated with a particular Yoshi as well as the melons only give you one petal in the health bar instead of three. The other fruits still give you credit towards the 30, but don't get you any health. Just look at the final boss, Baby Bowser: I thought he STOLE the tree that the Yoshis were after! That round should be the ultimate test: A couple melons to fill your health bar at the start, and then that's it, just try to beat King Koopa.

Yoshi Story was the first game I got on the N64 as I waited until 1998 before buying the console. It was a fun game to play but I felt it was too easy compared to the games I was wanting to play in 2D on a 3D system. But my two sisters enjoyed Yoshi Story and even my nephew who is a fan of Yoshi mostly because of the Mario 64 DS version, he would have loved to play Yoshi Story if I was able to bring out my N64 to give him a chance to play this.

This was one of my favorite N64 games back in the day. I think my cousins had it or it was rented from Blockbuster. Regardless, I fell in love with the game's designs. Years later, I got it on the Wii and while it was incredibly easy for an adult, I still loved it, despite not having touched it since I was a kid (I never actually owned the game myself). I really like the cute style and upbeat tone and music. Yeah, it's a very casual game, but I always considered myself as an "all-encompassing" gamer. I'm able to enjoy hardcore and casual games equally. To me, games are games, be they hardcore or casual. Neither is better or worse than the other.

I don't consider the length of a game to be a reason for it being bad. For example, Banjo Kazooie is incredibly short (even if you collect everything in the game), but it's still incredibly fun. For what it was, I thought Yoshi's Story was entertaining back in the day.

This was the first Yoshi game I’ve ever played, and it took a long time for me te read English (I’m Dutch), that being said, I love this game! As a kid I could not grasp how to unlock new levels, the cutscenes and songs were a nice brake for kid me. I always hummed along with them. It does annoy me as an adult tho. Also the black and white Yoshi were amazing. Not only did they play differently, but they also sparkes my idea of finding the purple Yoshi on the cover. For a kid, this game is amazing. For an adult, it is good, but short :)
